Consulta en la Biblioteca ETSI Industriales (Riunet)[EN] This document is the report of a research project about a smart helmet that uses piezoelectric sensors. The project has been developed in the department ‘Genie Electrique’ at INSA Lyon between February 2015 and June 2015. Most of the research projects born with a problem, it doesn’t matter what kind of problem, and during his development try to get an answer or solution or at least improve the actual solutions or give alternatives. This is the main topic of this first chapter. Here we will analyze the increasing worry in the USA for several last years with the health of his American football players. The concussions in the head, this is the problem, but in this sport it’s inevitable that it happen. So we will see what kind of healthy problems can suffer the players, how it’s the traditional plan of action when there are a concussions and how it could be changed in the future. We will talk about the numbers and the concussion statistics, and we will understand why there is this general worry. Also, we will explain how this technology of the smart helmets can help the doctors, the trainers, the players and, even the manufacturers of the helmets, during the match and after the match. And we will read his statements and opinions about the topic. Like always happen when there are a new technology a lot of new researchers, brands and manufacturers fight for be the first who introduce the product in the market, or to improve the technology. This is the way to operate the economical global system. This technology is not an exception and there are a lot of people (most in the USA) who already puts his eyes and his brains working for the cause. So, for finish the first chapter we will do a little benchmarking for analyze the projects of smart helmets who were born in the last years in the USA and also for tell how our technology can improve some characteristics of the actual smart helmets or give an alternative way to build a new generation of helmets. Once we have seen the general perspective of the research, the other chapters focus on our experience in Lyon. We will explain our work during five months in the laboratory in the chronology order and we organize the way that we have built our first prototype in three chapters. We will talk about the materials, the physics of the process, the methods, the software, the electronics used, etc. So, basically we deal with the tools that we have used, why we have used it and how, each one of this, functions for the cause.Giménez Hernandis, V. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Current non-destructive testing (NDT) methods primarily rely on the use of manual sensors to detect defects such as cracks and porosities, especially during production and maintenance phases. However, these techniques are often limited by cost, equipment size, and the need for human intervention, making them unsuitable for certain industrial applications where access is difficult or hazardous. This thesis explores the miniaturization of ultrasonic and eddy current NDT sensors to meet the needs of continuous structural monitoring, an approach integrated within the concept of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). The objective is to develop lightweight sensors that can be directly integrated into structures, capable of real-time monitoring of their condition while minimizing the costs and risks associated with conventional methods. The work focuses on two main areas: the miniaturization of eddy current sensors through the use of printed or screen-printed flat coils, and the design of miniaturized ultrasonic sensors based on piezoelectric composites. For eddy current sensors, the emphasis is on optimizing the coil quality factor to maximize their efficiency. The ultrasonic sensors, on the other hand, are developed from polymer-piezoelectric composite films, optimized to operate at high temperatures. Results show that these miniaturized sensors offer promising performance in terms of defect detection, thickness measurement, and durability in extreme environments. This thesis thus lays the foundation for a new generation of miniaturized NDT sensors, paving the way for broader adoption of SHM in sectors such as aerospace, rail, and energy. The development prospects are numerous, with potential applications in various critical industries

Electro-active polymers (EAPs) such as P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE) was demonstrated to be greatly promising in the field of flexible sensors and actuators. The advantages of using EAPs for smart electrical devices are due to their low cost, elastic properties, low density and ability to be manufactured into various shapes and thicknesses. In earlier years, P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE) terpolymer attracted many researchers due to its relaxor-ferroelectric property that exhibits high electrostriction phenomena. Although their attractiveness, this class of materials still owns two main technological limitations: low breakdown voltage and the high level of leakage current when high voltages are applied. The quadratic dependence of the strain response and mechanical energy density on the applied electric field highlights the relevance of EAP breakdown electric field, while reducing the dielectric losses. The low dielectric strength of P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE) terpolymer turns out to be a main concern for achieving high actuation performances. Moreover, the large of electric field required to attain satisfactory levels of deformation (≥ 40 V/µm, about) inevitably lead to high level of leakage current and thus short life-time. This work demonstrates that it is possible to dramatically increase the electrical breakdown and decrease the dielectric losses by controlling processing parameters of the polymer synthesis and fabrication procedures. Enhancement of intrinsic dielectric strength is obtained by tuning the terpolymer molecular weight and by improving the purity of polymeric dissolution used for fabrication of terpolymer films. The reduction of dielectric losses, and with particular attention at the high-voltage conduction losses (or leakage current) are achieved by the introduction of a novel thermal treatment in the film fabrication process, called electro-thermal annealing

Dielectric polymers have seen their importance grow in the field of electroactive materials because of their undeniable advantages, particularly for potential applications such as energy harvesting, actuation or sensors. The work done in this thesis is exploratory and aims primarily to provide on one hand a new piezoelectric-polymer hybrid approach for the development of energy harvesting systems and secondly to develop operating methods shape control of structures using electroactive polymers. The use of dielectric polymers in energy harvesting devices reconciles a high energy density with low rigidity and simplicity of integration. The main problem which is characteristic of such devices is that they necessarily require the use of an external bias high voltage supply (> 1kV) to achieve significant energy densities. The hybrid approach proposed in the context of this work eliminates this source of external energy by using a piezoelectric device capable of generating, under the action of a mechanical stress, the electric field required to operate the device. The problem of optimization of energy transfer between any two systems was also studied. The work was then directed towards the investigation of the feasibility of the piezo-polymer hybrid approach. Various configurations have been proposed and evaluated in order to deduce their optimal parameters. The performance of hybrid devices was experimentally evaluated and compared with that obtained with simple piezoelectric or electrostatic (using polymers) systems. The second part of this work focuses on the use of electroactive materials as actuators for shape control of thin structures. The final application aimed here is the development of an active skin type material allowing reconfiguration of orbiting satellite antennas. Different types of polymers were first tested and their performance has been compared with the theoretical models developed specifically in this context. Original structures have been proposed to solve some problems related to the actuation using dielectric polymers. Simple prototypes have validated the principle of the structural shape control. If their use brings undeniable advantages over conventional operating techniques, the fact remains that certain specific characteristics of electroactive polymers limit their performance. For example, the square law characteristic of the electroactive polymer control requires the use of particular geometries in order to obtain a symmetrical two-way displacement. This fact complicates the control of such actuators but allows in the end to add new features. Thus the use of a sectored network of polymer actuator is required to obtain a symmetrical movement on a single type of structure blocked blocked-beam, but allows to consider different deformation profiles. Other similar problems have been addressed using different original structures

Mitral regurgitation is the most frequent valvular disease in western populations. However medical strategies and surgical techniques and results widely diverge between centers and countries. Current intraoperative assessment during surgeries relies on a rough intraoperative morphological assessment. A comprehensive understanding of the physical changes occurring during such surgeries could help us optimize the current repair strategies in different manners: selection of the ideal strategy (tailored surgical strategy to patient’s needs), intraoperative assessment of the objective parameters (low-stress repair procedures) and development of innovative surgical devices performing low-stress percutaneous repairs. A five-year collaboration of surgical and scientific experts in France (Hospices Civils de Lyon, and the Laboratoire de Génie Electrique et Ferroélectricité), and in the USA (Mount Sinai Hospital and Sinai BioDesign laboratory) was carried out in order to develop innovative tools enabling the measurement of objective (physical) parameters in the mitral valve

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

The development of energy harvesting systems is linked to the emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) more specifically to the proliferation of Wireless Sensor Networks that should respond to the growing needs for monitoring data in domains as diverse as the industry, the urban environments, the home or even the human body. Recent progress in the CMOS technology have enabled to remove some of the technical obstacles to the deployment of these smart and autonomous devices, specifically thanks to the improvements of the performances of microelectronic components, the design of ultra-low-power circuits and even the creation of wireless communication standards well adapted to the needs of wireless sensors. Given the availability of ambient energy sources like mechanical, thermal, light etc., energy harvesters are becoming reliable alternatives to batteries in order to extend the autonomy of these sensors. Consequently, various technologies of generators have been developed to harvest different kind of energies in function of their availability. The present work is a contribution to the development of a thermal energy harvester based on bimetallic strips heat engine and piezoelectric membranes. This type of technology developed by STMicroelectronics is intended to be a low cost alternative to thermoelectric generators exploiting the seebeck effect to convert heat into electricity. Based on this working principle, many harvesters both at the micro and macro scale have been fabricated. This thesis deals with the development of macroscopic energy harvesters whose first proofs of concept were established in a previous thesis. An important part of this manuscript deals with the thermal optimization of this energy harvester both in static and dynamic modes. Once the thermal properties improved, various piezoelectric materials were tested and compared to find the most adapted ones to our application and the same work is realized to choose the best device’s architecture. The integration of the energy harvester is then realized and wireless sensor node applications are demonstrated using various communication protocols and sensors. SPICE modeling of the system is also made and coupled with simulations of power management circuits developed by CEA’s design team. Finally, alternative ways to exploit wasted heat and vibrations are proposed through the development of piezoelectric bimetals and dual energy harvesters able to harvest thermal energy and mechanical energy at the same time: piezoelectric bimetals are realized either by direct deposition of piezoelectric composites or piezoelectric thin films onto bimetals. In the case of the dual energy harvester, piezoelectric cantilever beams were designed and simulated to vibrate at low frequencies (between 50Hz and 125Hz)
