From an unpaid electricity bill to the primacy of EU law: the Rise of Europe's Integration Through Law

    No full text
With the Costa v ENEL decision of 1964, the European Court of Justice began building European Union Law through its legal interpretations. Since the decision issued by the Luxembourg Court more than 55 years ago, many things have changed. The European Union has grown from its six core member states into its current 28, while along the way, Germany has been reunified and now, one of its most prominent members, the United Kingdom, may leave in 2020. This talk reviews the historical evolution of the fundamental principles of European Union Law as well as the main challenges that have existed and continue to exist for the functioning of the Union, its form of government and its citizens

The widely spread idea that the biographical entries of the Suda come for the most part from Hesychius of Milet is ungrounded. On Hesychius we know basically nothing, and the edition of the fragments of this author edited by Johannes Flach at the end of the 19th century is a forger

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
