Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    Get PDF
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

The body of literary work produced in Macau before and after the handover (the transfer of Portuguese sovereignty to the People’s Republic of China in December 1999) has provided a unique insight into the historical and cultural character specific to the Macanese literary phenomenon. According to current comparative practices, through a thorough analysis of an illustrative group of texts and by questioning three interconnected concepts − identity, cultural memory and history − the purpose of this dissertation is to evaluate arguments that support the existence of singular features in literature of Macau during the pre-postcolonial period and after 1999. With the purpose of discussing Macau’s culture identity, a literary corpus has been selected from a range of Portuguese writers, directly or indirectly related to the city, as well as some Chinese authors translated to Portuguese who have also written about Macau. Such is the case of Agustina Bessa-Luís, who published A Quinta Essência in 1999, and of some Portuguese and Macanese authors represented in Antologia de Poetas de Macau, edited by Jorge Arrimar and Yao Jing Ming, also published in 1999. Additionaly, writers represented in Portuguese and English anthologies, or who published under their own name, such as Carlos Morais José or Fernando Sales Lopes, will also be subjected to analysis

Abstract Assuming with Vergílio Ferreira that the modern eroticism is based on the paradox of pretending to validate an interdict, which one does not believe anymore, for the pleasure of negating it, in this work we try to understand the way with which Vergílio Ferreira tried to bring the erotic appeal to a strictly human dimension. That’s why in his fictional work eroticism is no longer presented under the sign of profanation, which presupposes a transcending value to be profaned, but under the sign of violation. If the mark of violence is still manifest in this eroticism, it now relegates from the despair that strikes individuals when pursuing in vain the «you» whose internal “I” reveals itself intangible, since the “I” is the singular presence of one to himself. However, in the aftermath of such a violence, Vergílio Ferreira seems to find a way in which a communion can still be asserted: the communion of solitudes that as solitudes recognize themselves so that they can build an alliance over earth. Love would thus be what in man refers to the limit that would overcome his loneliness and settle him in presence of what would redeem him. In this impossible limit, as defends Vergílio Ferreira, is the summit of what man should aspire so that he would always be a man, now that he can finally be truly a man after the death of God and its substitutes

    Kafka: uma habilidade necessária

    No full text
The central idea of this thesis is that there is some connection between what writing represented for Kafka and the weird abilities of some of his characters. Thus, in chapter One, I argue that writing, for Kafka, was a need and not a pleasure or a reaction against something. Having this need, Kafka had to find a way of accomplish it: chapters Two, Three and Four present different solutions for this problem, being first mentioned in chapter Four the notion of ability. In chapters Five and Six, I focus on that notion of ability, as well as in the effects and consequences the performance of it produces, and I try to relate it to what writing meant for Kafka. Finally, in chapter Seven, I suggest that should exist some appropriate spaces for those who perform an ability and I try to characterise these spaces
