Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Integration of Pre-Hospital Emergency Care into Undergraduate Medical Education: a Pilot Experience
Trabalho Final do Mestrado Integrado em Medicina apresentado à Faculdade de MedicinaOs estudantes de Medicina apresentam poucas oportunidades formativas no âmbito da emergência médica pré-hospitalar (EMPH) e do trauma. Apesar de a Faculdade de Medicina da Universidade de Coimbra ter introduzido recentemente, no plano de estudos do Mestrado Integrado em Medicina (MIM), uma Unidade Curricular Opcional de 2º Ciclo designada “Trauma, Emergência e Catástrofe”, revela-se necessário um maior contacto prático para consolidação das competências técnicas e não técnicas abordadas. Tendo em conta o meu gosto por esta área e de modo a completar a minha própria formação académica e perceber a exequibilidade da integração de estágios de observação no Instituto Nacional de Emergência Médica (INEM) no plano curricular do MIM (com carácter opcional), realizei um estágio de 64 horas em diversos meios de emergência do INEM durante os meses de julho e agosto de 2022: 32 horas em Viatura Médica de Emergência e Reanimação (VMER), 16 horas em Ambulância de Suporte Imediato de Vida (SIV), 8 horas em Ambulância de Emergência Médica (AEM), 6 horas em Centro de Orientação de Doentes Urgentes (CODU) e uma visita de 2 horas a uma Ambulância de Transporte Inter-hospitalar Pediátrico (TIP). Considero que foi uma experiência muito proveitosa e de grande utilidade pedagógica, que contribuiu para o meu aperfeiçoamento técnico e não técnico e para o conhecimento desta área da Medicina, pouco abordada ao longo do curso. Acredito que os estágios no CODU e na VMER sejam os mais adequados à realidade de um estudante de Medicina, pois permitem ter uma visão abrangente de todo o Sistema Integrado de Emergência Médica enquanto se observa a atuação do médico como profissional de EMPH, permitindo ao estudante não só compreender quais as competências, valores e atitudes que se espera que o mesmo possua, mas também ampliar a diversidade da sua formação académica.Medical students have few training opportunities in the field of prehospital emergency care (PHEC) and trauma. Although the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra recently introduced an Elective Curricular Unit called “Trauma, Emergência e Catástrofe” in the Integrated Master’s degree in Medicine’s (MIM) study plan, it is necessary to have more practical training in an effort to improve the technical and non-technical skills learned. Taking into account my interest in this subject, in order to complete my own academic learning and to understand the feasibility of integrating observation internships at the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) in the MIM’s curriculum (as optional), I did a 64-hour internship in several INEM emergency vehicles and facilities during July and August 2022: 32 hours in a Medical Emergency and Resuscitation Vehicle (VMER), 16 hours in an Immediate Life Support Ambulance (SIV), 8 hours in a Medical Emergency Ambulance (AEM), 6 hours in an Emergency Coordination Centre (CODU) and a 2-hour visit to a Paediatric Inter-hospital Transport Ambulance (TIP). I consider that it was a very fruitful experience, with great pedagogic value, thus contributing to an improvement of my technical and non-technical skills as well as to my knowledge of this subject of Medicine, which was poorly addressed during the course. I believe that internships in CODU and VMER are the most suitable to the reality of a medical student, as they allow a comprehensive view of the entire Integrated Medical Emergency System (SIEM) while observing the doctor’s performance as a PHEC professional, allowing the student to not only understand what skills, values and attitudes he is expected to possess, but also to expand the diversity of his academic learning
Relatório de Estágio CdM: Módulo de Refeições
Relatório de Estágio do Mestrado em Engenharia InformáticaO Instituto Português de Oncologia de Lisboa (IPOL) é uma instituição altamente especializada no tratamento de doentes oncológicos e que tem vindo a tentar desenvolver as suas infraestruturas e tecnologias para melhor atender os seus doentes. O IPOL entrou em contacto com a empresa ST+I para a criação de um módulo (aplicação) que permitisse realizar a gestão da cozinha ao nível das dietas e suplementos alimentares a confecionar para os doentes e serviços do hospital (funcionários). A empresa já possuía uma aplicação para a cozinha em funcionamento em alguns hospitais em Portugal, mas era considerada lenta, incompleta e difícil de utilizar. Assim, desenvolveu-se uma nova aplicação, tendo em conta os requisitos do cliente. Para esse efeito, em primeiro lugar escolheram-se as tecnologias que poderiam ser utilizadas. Selecionaram-se as mais indicadas para a realização do projeto, de acordo com as exigências do cliente e as tecnologias em uso na empresa. Considerou-se como tecnologia de base de dados o Oracle e como linguagem de programação foi considerado o C# como a mais indicada para a realização do projeto. Diferentes funcionalidades foram desenvolvidas de forma a permitir a gestão das refeições a confecionar pela cozinha do hospital, quer para os doentes internados, acompanhantes, doentes não internados e serviços hospitalares. A aplicação permite assegurar uma correta distribuição de refeições pelo hospital, graças às etiquetas que nela são geradas e que acompanham os tabuleiros das refeições para os doentes. Foi também criado um mecanismo de segurança para a faturação das refeições, garantido através da utilização de códigos de barra nas senhas para o refeitório. Após todo o processo de desenvolvimento da aplicação estar concluído foram realizados testes à aplicação. Os resultados obtidos mostraram que a aplicação necessitava de algumas correções, e que se poderia proceder a algumas melhorias no design e no desempenho. Finalmente, após as alterações à aplicação os testes foram realizados com sucesso e foi alcançado o correto funcionamento da aplicação. Terminada a fase de testes internos, a aplicação foi entregue ao cliente, juntamente com o manual de utilizador, para realizarem os respetivos testes e posterior análise dos resultados. À data do presente relatório, os testes no cliente ainda se encontram em execução, não existindo resultados.The Portuguese Institute of Oncology of Lisbon (IPOL) is a highly specialized instituion
in the treatment of cancer patients and it has been trying to develop its infrastructures and
technologies to better serve its patients. Thus, IPOL contacted the company ST+I to create a
module (application) that would allow the management of the kitchen regarding to the diets and
food supplements. The company already had an application for the kitchen present in some
hospitals in Portugal, but it was considered slow, incomplete and difficult to use. Thus, a new
desktop application was developed, taking into account the requirements of the client.
Initially, we considered the technologies that could be used, taking into account the
requirements of the client and the technologies used in the company ST+I. It was considered as
database technology Oracle and as programming language was considered C# as the most
suitable for realization of the project.
Different functionalities were developed to allow the management of meals to be prepared
by the hospital kitchen, either for inpatients, caregivers and hospital services. The application
ensures correct distribution of meals through the hospital, thanks to the labels generated that
accompane the meals for patients. In addition, a security mechanism for meal was created,
guaranteed through the use of bar codes for the cafeteria.
After the entire application development process was completed, application tests were
performed. The results showed that the application needed some corrections, and that some
improvements could be made. Finally, after the changes to the application, the tests were
successfully performed and the correct operation of the application was achieved. After the
internal testing phase, the application was delivered to the customer, along with the user
manual, to carry out the respective tests and subsequent analysis of the results. At the time of
this report, the tests on the client are still running, with no results to show

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
