Challenges in Health Information Systems: Health Data Management and Access for Life Sciences Research
Making the best use of health data is both the main challenge and the main opportunity for cutting-edge research in the Life Sciences sector. This paper examines the main difficulties and hindrances that Life Sciences researchers encounter to access, process, and analyse health data for secondary use by drawing on the case of Human Technopole, a new international research institute established in Milan. While focusing on the critical aspects of the Italian National Health System (Sistema Sanitario Nazionale - SSN) health data management and the consequences on lack of access for research purposes, the paper also presents an ongoing experimental UK project as well as an already implemented programme for managing and accessing demographical and registry data in Italy, to provide insights for possible future solutions
Legodroid: A Type-Driven Library for Android and LEGO Mindstorms Interoperability
LEGO Mindstorms robots are widely used as educational tools to acquire skills in programming complex systems involving the interaction of sensors and actuators, and they offer a flexible and modular workbench to design and evaluate user-machine interaction prototypes in the robotic area. However, there is still a lack of support to interoperability features and the need of high-level tools to program the interaction of a robot with other devices. In this paper, we introduce Legodroid, a new Java library enabling cross-programming LEGO Mindstorms robots through Android smartphones that exploits their combined computational and sensorial capabilities in a seamless way. The library provides a number of type-driven coding patterns for interacting with sensors and motors. In this way, the robustness of the software managing robot's sensors dramatically improves
MySQL extension automatic porting to PDO for PHP migration and security improvement
In software management, the upgrade of programming languages may introduce critical issues. This is the case of PHP, the fifth version of which is going towards the end of the support. The new release improves on different aspects, but removes the old deprecated MySQL extensions, and supports only the newer library of functions for the connection to the databases. The software systems already in place need to be renewed to be compliant with respect to the new language version. The conversion of the source code, to be safe against injection attacks, should involve also the transformation of the query code. The purpose of this work is the design of specific tool that automatically applies the required transformation yielding to a precise and efficient conversion procedure. The tool has been applied to different projects to provide evidence of its effectiveness
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Replaceability and negotiation in a cloud service ecosystem
Cloud federation is an aggregation of services from different providers in a single pool supporting interoperability and resource migration. In federation, Services are assigned to the consumer’s service access pool as per their specific functional and associated Quality level requirements. The said assignment is based on the advertised features of services. Sometimes, the selected provider fails to provide the committed service or, it fails to fulfill the expected QoS level. As a result, the consumer is being deprived of getting the services at required quality levels, in spite of subscribing and paying. Re-federation i.e. the inclusion of new services from different providers in the resource pool is a solution. This costly and time consuming re-federation process harms the overall harmony, reputation and performance of the existing federation. In this paper, the necessary strategies to make a federation autonomic is proposed. It helps federation to work in a self-adaptive manner by delaying the re-federation process through replacement and negotiation mechanisms. This allows the federation to keep a balanced state in case of failures. The proposed methods are simulated and the claims are substantiated by the preliminary experimental outcomes
