    Mountain landslides: Monitoring, modeling, and mitigation

    This editorial paper summarizes the contents of the papers included in the Special Issue "Mountain Landslides: Monitoring, Modeling, and Mitigation". The Special Issue provides an overview of methodological papers, as well as some innovative research carried out in the field and in the lab. Even if most papers adopted an integrated approach, sections representing the three research issues outlined in the title can be drawn: the first deals with monitoring, the second focuses on modeling, and the third is related to mitigation. Regardless of the section, the papers included in this special issue put forward methodological and practical implications that, more than likely, can stimulate further research efforts and support the stakeholders to gain better knowledge of landslide hazards in mountain environments, with an aim to tackle the urgent issue of sustainable development in times of global change that can affect landslide occurrences in mountain chains of the world

    New oral anticoagulants: Considerations of clinical pharmacology

    Oral anticoagulant therapy is widely used to prevent and treat thromboembolic events. Traditionally, warfarin has been the drug of choice providing a significant reduction in stroke risk in patients with atrial fibrillation. However, warfarin has several drawbacks, such as a delayed onset of anticoagulant action, a narrow therapeutic index, an unpredictable and variable response. The new oral anticoagulants (NOACs), dabigatran (a reversible direct thrombin inhibitor) and the direct factor Xa inhibitors rivaroxaban, apixaban and edoxaban offer fixed dosing, more predictable pharmacokinetics and fewer interactions with drugs and food. Moreover, these drugs seem to provide an improved benefit-risk ratio with respect to thromboembolic events and bleeding complications in a broad patient population. However, significant differences between the four NOACs in terms of pharmacokinetic and safety profile are observed and must be considered to personalize the therapy based on the pathophysiological conditions of the patient. In the present review the pharmacological characteristics of NOACs in relationship to their safety and efficacy profiles will be discussed

    Diversity of epiphytic lichens and metal contents of Parmelia caperata thalli as monitors of air pollution in the town of Pistoia (C Italy)

    The results of a biomonitoring survey carried out in the town of Pistoia (central Italy) using the biodiversity of epiphytic lichens and the accumulation of heavy metals in thalli of Parmelia caperata as indicators of air pollution are reported. Compared to previous surveys, the overall situation generally improved, with higher lichen diversity at most stations and lower metal concentrations in P. caperata thalli. However, the general picture according to a calibrated scale of environmental naturality/alteration was substantially negative, with about 87% of the study area classified as 'altered' (including the lichen desert) or 'semi-altered'. To explain this apparent contradiction, it has been suggested that lichen colonization is determined by declining SO2 concentrations, while major injuries to lichen communities are caused by the constantly high levels of NOX. In spite of the low levels of Pb measured in P. caperata thalli, vehicular traffic was excluded as the main source of atmospheric pollution. Domestic heating seems to be the main cause of changes in the diversity of epiphytic lichens in the study area

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
