The Cornelius Recreation Club succeeded the earlier "Commercial Club." Their stated purpose was "to provide recreational activities for both the young and older people of the community." Their regular social activities included dances, sports, picnics and holiday parties.
The Club also hosted several "minstrel shows" in the late 1940s for fundraising purposes. These offensive musical plays featured white community members wearing blackface and dressed in clownish outfits, denigrating African American people and traditions. These shows were presumably given to all-white local audiences. The 1947 records here show some of the process that the club followed in planning their first minstrel show in 1948.This is one item from a collection of materials that once belonged to the Cornelius Recreation Club, which was active in Cornelius, Oregon from 1947-1950. Cornelius. It creates possibilities but is not designed as a precisely defined linear event. The Plan
provides a framework for enhancement, improvement and redevelopment of the core business
area of the City of Cornelius. It paints a vision of urban identity oriented toward pedestrian friendly
streetscapes along a state highway with easy access to an active commercial and civic district from
walkable, stable and diverse residential neighborhoods and surrounding areas, via both public and
private transportation. [From the Plan]"To address these
challenges and coordinate with other efforts of the Metro 2040 planning process and State of
Oregon transportation planning rule program, the Cornelius Main Street District Plan was first
developed in 1997 and is now revised in 2002.
The 1997 planning effort was funded through a grant from the Transportation and Growth
Management (TGM) Program, a joint program of the Oregon Department of Transportation and
the Oregon Department of Land Conservation and Development. TGM grants rely on federal
Intermodal Surface Transportation Efficiency Act and Oregon Lottery funds.

time, the City has grown by an estimated 50% in population, depleted much of its vacant land
inventory and projected significant redevelopment and urban growth boundary (UGB) expansion.
The primary purpose of this update is to ensure the recommended system plan can adequately serve
planned major growth areas, including the recently approved 260-acre industrial expansion of the
urban growth boundary just north of the Cornelius city limits and confirm consistency with the
current Washington County TSP, Regional Transportation Plan and Statewide Planning Policies. [From the Plan]"This project is partially funded by a grant from the Transportation and Growth Management
(TGM) Program, a joint program of the Oregon Department of Transportation and the Oregon
Department of Land Conservation and Development. This TGM grant is financed, in part, by
