Diego De San Pedro's "Carcel De Amor": a Critical Edition and Rhetorical Study. (Volumes I and II).
No full textThis dissertation presents a critical edition and study of Diego de San Pedro's sentimental romance, the Carcel de amor. The introductory study analyzes from a rhetorical viewpoint the prose style of the Carcel de amor (1492) in comparison to the style of Diego de San Pedro's earlier romance, the Tractado de amores de Arnalte y Lucenda (1491). The rhetoric of the two novelas sentimentales is discussed with regard to both dispositio and elocutio. With respect to the latter, enumeration and prose rhythm are reviewed, and the effect of the textual variants on rhetorical style is also taken into consideration. The critical edition of the Carcel de amor contains a catalogue of early and modern editions, a description of the stemmatic relationship between the fifteenth- and sixteenth-century texts, a linguistic description of the exemplars, and the archetypal reconstruction, variants, and annotation of the Carcel de amor. Since the Carcel exists in no extant manuscript, the critical collation must be based on existing printed editions. The collation follows the English methodology of textual criticism as prescribed by such scholars as W. W. Greg and Fredson Bowers. Thus, the investigation is two-fold--an analysis and history of rhetoric in the prose of San Pedro and a philologically sound critical edition of the Carcel de amor. Both studies show how Diego de San Pedro's use of rhetoric changed. The author, after the composition of his first romance, ab and oned the rhetorical code of poetic prose and aligned himself more closely with Italianate Renaissance Ciceronianism.
