Analysis of backgrounds for the ANAIS-112 dark matter experiment

    No full text
The ANAIS (Annual modulation with NaI(Tl) Scintillators) experiment aims at the confirmation or refutation of the DAMA/LIBRA positive annual modulation signal in the low energy detection rate, using the same target and technique, at the Canfranc Underground Laboratory (LSC) in Spain. ANAIS-112, consisting of nine 12.5 kg NaI(Tl) modules produced by Alpha Spectra Inc. in a 3 × 3 matrix configuration, is taking data smoothly in “dark matter search” mode since August, 2017, after a commissioning phase and operation of the first detectors during the last years in various set-ups. A large effort has been carried out within ANAIS to characterize the background of sodium iodide detectors, before unblinding the data and performing the first annual modulation analysis. Here, the background models developed for all the nine ANAIS-112 detectors are presented. Measured spectra from threshold to high energy in different conditions are well described by the models based on quantified activities independently estimated following several approaches. In the region from 1 to 6keVee the measured, efficiency corrected background level is 3.58±0.02keV-1kg-1day-1; NaI crystal bulk contamination is the dominant background source being 210 Pb , 40 K , 22 Na and 3 H contributions the most relevant ones. This background level, added to the achieved 1keVee analysis threshold (thanks to the outstanding light collection and robust filtering procedures developed), allow ANAIS-112 to be sensitive to the modulation amplitude measured by DAMA/LIBRA, and able to explore at three sigma level in 5 years the WIMP parameter region singled out by this experiment. © 2019, The Author(s)

Federation Wallonia Brussel from Belgium is engaged in a reform aimed at developing personalized support to sustain differentiation: an additional teacher is in the classroom for a few hours. This paper relates the experiment with 10 schools at the level of the 5-8 years old. Its objective is to document the evolution of representations and practices of differentiation and collaboration. Individual questionnaires were submitted to teachers one year apart. Analysis of data revealed a broadening of pupils’ conceptions. The presence of an additional teacher in the classroom developed a collaborative dynamic and a differentiation beyond the classroom space. At the end of our investigations, it seems that the representation of teacher’s working time doesn’t integrate the collective dimension yet and constitutes an obstacle. professional representation – pedagogical differentiation – change of practice – collaborative practice – co-teaching practice – professional development – teacher working tim

Anais Nin: A case study of personality disorder and creativity

    No full text
Anais Nin, diarist and author of autobiographical novellas and erotica, and gregarious socialite, was known for her exotic persona and stormy personal life. The concept of personality disorder and the underlying assumption of the buffering capacity that personality affords to stressors are discussed. Against this background, evidence drawn from Nin's diaries, short stories and two biographies suggests that she conformed to the diagnostic criteria of histrionic personality disorder (HPD), with comorbid borderline and narcissistic features, and numerous Axis I symptoms. The proposed origin of the overall dysfunctional histrionic pattern is attributed to her early developmental history, and the maladaptive cognitive mechanisms of dissociation and repression inferred from her writings and shown to conform to the HPD pattern. Finally, it is argued that while Nin may not have displayed the classic divergent cognitive style thought to underlie the association between schizotypy and creativity, her HPD psychopathology was pivotal in shaping her creative products, most famous of which is her diary. The intuitive quest in the novels of Anais Nin: A reader\u27s guide through the Cities of the Interior

    No full text
This work, a reader\u27s guide, explores the five novels of Anais Nin\u27s continuous novel Cities of the Interior through the underlying motif of the intuitive quest. An examination of the characters, symbols, poetic style, and structure of Nin\u27s novels reveals the author\u27s thematic focus on the need for intuitive forms of expression in an often overly rational modern-day society. Each novel is approached as part of a fictional odyssey that relates the theme of the intuitive quest to the three major female characters\u27 contemporary, psychological search for selfhood. Author and reader are considered throughout as the protagonists\u27 co-questers. In its pattern of separation, initiation, and return, as described by Joseph Campbell in The Hero with a Thousand Faces and Myths to Live By, the course of each heroine\u27s journey is compared to that of the mythic and romantic hero. The extent to which Nin\u27s characters depart from society, undergo an inner initiation period, and renew their relationships with the larger human community is discussed. While similarities between Nin\u27s quest narrative and the traditional quest tale are demonstrated, differences are also illustrated. Nin\u27s presentation of a psychic, female rendition of the classic male quest is emphasized. In each of the five novels, the emotional nature of the adventures of the questing heroines is contrasted with the physical character of the exploits of the hero of the typical quest tale. The intended outcome of this reader\u27s guide through Anais Nin\u27s Cities of the Interior is a clearer understanding and better appreciation of the author\u27s undervalued fictional achievement. In turn, familiarity with Nin\u27s novels contributes to dispelling the mistaken notion that the author\u27s outlook is solipsistic and affirms her belief in the necessity of establishing a meaningful interaction between self and society. This study of Cities of the Interior is an offer of assistance to the reader who wishes to embark with Nin and her heroines on a descent into the interior cities--a positive, intuitive quest that eventuates in loving inclusion of others

    No full text
