    Size, spatial, and bathymetrical distribution of the ascidian Halocynthia papillosa in Mediterranean coastal bottoms: Benthic-pelagic coupling implications

    Abstract: Benthic suspension feeders are abundant in Mediterranean coastal environments, though most of them are threatened due to overexploitation, climate change impacts, and unregulated diving or fishing practices. Little is known about most of the coastal communities in terms of large-scale distribution and realistic benthic-pelagic coupling implications, which are keys to understand and manage those threatened ecosystems. The active suspension feeder Halocynthia papillosa (one of the most common ascidian species of the Mediterranean Sea) was selected as a model organism to help to understand the ecological role in benthic-pelagic coupling processes and its importance as a carbon sink (an essential ecosystem service). The spatial and bathymetrical distribution of this organism has been studied using remotely operated vehicle video transects. The species was distributed throughout the study area, with a maximum density of 4 specimens m-2. The highest abundances and the biggest sizes were observed on the range of 20-50 m depth. The role as carbon and nitrogen sink of this suspension feeder has been quantified coupling distribution data with existing in situ studies of feeding and respiration. Along the 1.24 ha of the study area, H. papillosa yearly ingested 519.4 g C and 31.4 g N and retained 20.2 g C. As long as the physiological data are known, this new methodology could be very useful in assessing bentho-pelagic links and the capacity of being C and N sinks of a wide range of species. This new approach may be essential for the future management of benthic communities. © 2014 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg

    Benthic-pelagic coupling: New perspectives in the animal forests

    Animal forests all over the world play an essential role in benthic-pelagic coupling processes. These processes can change according to the feeding strategies of benthic species, as well as their extension and biomass. From the oligotrophic coral reefs to the highly seasonal productive Antarctic ecosystems, suspension feeders (the main eco-engineers of the animal forest) have evolved feeding strategies depending on the environmental constraints, which shape their survivorship and partly explain their high biodiversity. In the process of benthic-pelagic coupling, these organisms also have the ability to retain part of the organic and inorganic matter in their long-lived structures. In this chapter, hypotheses related to benthic-pelagic coupling processes will be presented, along with the newest methodology used to quantify the capacity of animal forests to function as carbon sinks. Although the role of animal forests as carbon sinks is an essential ecosystem service, it has been largely neglected in the conservation models for the majority of marine environments. The importance of food availability (quantity and quality) in suspension feeding animals will be discussed with a new approach based on random pulses of energy input. This approach will help to better understand their nutritional condition and the health status of their populations. Finally, to allow making key evaluations of the influence of animal forests in benthic-pelagic coupling processes and as carbon sinks, this approach will be overlapped with the distribution, density, and population size structure of benthic suspension feeders, obtained through the analysis of video or photo recorded via remotely operated vehicles (ROV). This new approach will be an essential tool for coastal, continental shelves and deep water coral area management and conservation, where animal forests are threatened synergistically by several direct and indirect impacts

    Terrestrial (trees, shrubs) and marine (seaweeds and seagrasses) organisms act as carbon (C) sinks, but the role of benthic suspension feeders in this regard has been largely neglected so far. Gorgonians are one of the most conspicuous inhabitants of marine animal forests (mainly composed of sessile filter feeders); their seston capture rates influence benthic-pelagic coupling processes and they act as C sinks immobilizing carbon in their long-living structures. Three gorgonian species (Paramuricea clavata, Eunicella singularis and Leptogorgia sarmentosa) were studied coupling data of population size structure, biomass and spatial distribution in a NW Mediterranean area (Cap de Creus, Spain) with feeding, respiration and growth rates. In the study area, we calculated that P. clavata sequestered 0.73 ± 0.71 g C m−2 year−1, E. singularis 0.73 ± 0.89 g C m−2 year−1 and L. sarmentosa 0.03 ± 0.02 g C m−2 year−1. To our knowledge, this is the first attempt to calculate the importance as C sinks of gorgonian species that we consider as a starting point to estimate the importance of marine animal forests in C sequestration, and to ensure appropriate management and protection especially in areas and at depths where they are concentrated

    Feeding of Aulacomya atra Under Different Organic Matter Sources (Autochthonous and Allochthonous) in a Chilean Patagonia Fjord Ecosystem

    Aulacomya atra is an active suspension feeder, spatially dominant in the shallow-water hard-bottom benthic communities of the Chilean Patagonia fjords. In this region, the vertical flux of autochthonous organic matter (OM) reaching the benthos is augmented by allochthonous OM both from a terrestrial origin and from intensive salmon farming. This mixed pool of OM represents a potential source of food for a variety of benthic consumers, but to date little is known about the degree of utilization of these materials by filter feeders organisms. In this context, feeding experiments on A. atra in Puyuhuapi Fjord, Chilean Patagonia, were conducted during summer and winter 2018–2019. These experiments were designed to determine ingestion rates (IR) of A. atra fed with autochthonous (bacterial and microplanktonic community) and allochthonous (salmon food pellet) OM. Additionally, samples of A. atra tissues and suspended particulate organic matter (SPOM) were taken from the study area for stable isotope analysis. Data from laboratory experiments indicated that A. atra can feed on both autochthonous and allochthonous OM, but higher IR were detected in individuals fed with salmon food pellets. Because the IR is sensitive to food particle density rather than specific type of food, diet preferences of A. atra in feeding experiments could not be determined. Stable isotope analyses indicate that A. atra in natural environment preferentially exploits food with an isotopic signal corresponding to autochthonous OM, highlighting the primary role of phytoplankton carbon in their diet. Extensive utilization of terrestrially derived OM is therefore unlikely, although utilization of OM derived from salmon farming is not precluded because of the overlap in isotopic signal between food pellets and marine plankton

    Placogorgia coronata first documented record in Italian waters: Use of trawl bycatch to unveil vulnerable deep-sea ecosystems

    Despite the pluri-decennial history of bottom trawling monitoring in the Italian Sea, limited attention has been given to the study of cold water corals (CWCs) present in the bycatch. As a result, trawl samples still hold a great potential to reveal information about deep-water biodiversity. The rare Mediterranean CWC species Placogorgia coronata was repeatedly found in the bottom trawl discards of the red shrimp fishery in Santa Margherita Ligure (Ligurian Sea). The supposed rarity of this species is strongly biased by taxonomic problems within the genus as well as by the limited exploration of these deep habitats. Scientific literature as well as remotely operated vehicle surveys highlighted the presence, in the investigated trawled area, of a dead white coral framework, supporting the hypothesis that the CWC studied, probably thriving on coral rubble, occurs here due to the natural protection to trawling offered by the coral matrix. Trawlers, however, may accidentally affect these secondary hard grounds, as demonstrated by the discard content. The long-term monitoring of the catches highlighted a removal rate of up to one colony every two trawling operations; based on the anecdotal fishing effort in this area and the status of the discarded specimens, it is possible to estimate an average catch rate of about 18 live colonies per year per fisherman. The occurrence of rare CWC species with low resilience to fishing disturbance is among the required information for the identification of fishing restriction zones designed to protect deep vulnerable marine ecosystems

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
