Analyzing the impact of Hurricane Matthew on the housing market in Savannah Georgia

Includes bibliographical references.2022 Summer. This study seeks to shed light on the relationship between destructive hurricanes and public belief in the increasing risk to homeownership from these storms as climate change progresses. We investigate the impact of Hurricane Matthew on transaction prices of properties in the city of Savannah, Georgia because it is an example of a natural disaster which was unique in severity for its era but is characteristic of storms which will become more common with warmer oceans and higher sea levels (IPPC 2021). Hurricane Matthew made landfall in 2016. It was the first category 5 hurricane in the Atlantic since 2007 and occurred late in the season relative to previous hurricanes in the area. We use a hedonic modeling approach to shed light on the perceived risk and vulnerability of owning low elevation real estate by comparing property prices before and after the hurricane. We do this to speculate on whether the impact of a single storm can noticeably change the behavior of market participants in a location. Within our hedonic modeling framework, we employ several econometric specifications including a difference-in-difference regression, an event study model, and a repeated sales model. Our findings indicate that homebuyers were willing to pay a premium for more protected homes, i.e. higher elevation homes, compared with less protected homes, i.e. lower elevation homes, in the two years after the storm. This changing preference for relatively safer homes within a county, at the expense of the amenities available to the low elevation homes such as ocean views, is consistent with increased belief in the immediate dangers of climate change following a destructive event

Baoluo he Matai fu yin lü fa si xiang de hu wen ben fen xi =: An intertextual study of law in Pauline letters and the Gospel of Matthew

    No full text
Ph.D.Scholars have researched the relation between Paul and the Gospel of Matthew on Jewish law for a long time. Some scholars proposed that some passages in Matthew criticized Paul. But they didn’t find substantial evidence, and Paul’s name did not appear in the Gospel of Matthew. So their opinions are still questioned by many scholars.Following previous studies, this research employs M. Pfister’s intertextual theory to interpret Paul and Matthew’s view of the law, and analyzes contemporary Christian and Jewish scriptures to demonstrate the possible relation of Paul and Matthew. We find that Matthew does not criticize Paul completely: Paul and Matthew both think that Jewish law has authority, and they do not compel Gentile Christian to obey the law strictly. The divergence of opinions between Paul and Matthew was their different requirements to Jewish Christian. Paul thinks that the law is not compulsory for Jewish Christian, but Matthew demands Jewish Christian to obey the law strictly until the end of the world. Except Paul and his followers, Christian and Jewish religion in the first century held that the law was not abolishable. Therefore, Matthew’s demand to Jewish Christian may be regarded as a kind of criticism on Paul and Paulinism. According to Paul’s teaching on justification, Christians cannot be justified by works of the law, or in other words, cannot be inherited God’s kingdom. Much more, Christians should actively love others, but not passively obey the law. Some Jewish Christian might be influenced by Paul’s radical teaching and did not obey the law. Matthew criticizes those Christians in his Gospel and emphasizes the authority of the law.By comparing the theological themes related to the law, this research attempts to a more comprehensive picture of the relation between Paul and Matthew. Previous studies only pointed out that Matthew criticized Paul on law. Instead of a one-sided picture, where Matthew was said to have criticized Paul’s concept of the law, this dissertation analyzes different levels of the law and demonstrates that Matthew does criticize Paul and his followers on their lawlessness. However, Matthew at the same time approved Paul on some issues, for example: Gentile Christian do not have to obey the law strictly and all the law depend on love. Matthew follows and corrects Paul’s concept on law. Through our studies of Matthew and Paul on the law, we may glimpse a bit more the development trends in the Early Christian. Parallel title from added title page.Thesis Ph.D. Chinese University of Hong Kong 2019.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 160-171).Abstracts in Chinese and English.Title from PDF title page (viewed on February 25, 2022).Xu Jun

In Chapter 2 (coauthored with Matthew Wiswall) I develop new results for the identification and estimation of the technology of children’s skill formation when children’s skills are unobserved. In Chapter 3 I shed light on the importance of dynamic equilibrium interdependencies between children’s social interactions and parental investments decisions in explaining developmental differences between different social environments. In Chapter 4 (coauthored with Giuseppe Sorrenti) I study the effect of family income and maternal hours worked on both cognitive and behavioral child development.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Economics 201

Eyewall replacement cycle of Hurricane Matthew (2016) observed by Doppler radars

    No full text
2018 Fall.Includes bibliographical references. An eyewall replacement cycle (ERC) can cause significant changes to the intensity and structure of a tropical cyclone, but the physical mechanisms involved in the ERC process are not fully understood due to a lack of detailed observations. Hurricane Matthew was observed by the NEXRAD KAMX, KMLB, and KJAX polarimetric radars and NOAA P-3 airborne radar when it approached the southeastern United States during an ERC event. The radar observations indicate that Matthew's primary eyewall was replaced with a weaker outer eyewall, but unlike a classic ERC, Matthew did not reintensify after the inner eyewall disappeared. The evolution of Matthew's ERC is analyzed by examining the observations from the airborne and ground-based radars near the Florida coast. Triple Doppler analysis is performed by combining the NOAA P-3 airborne fore and aft radar scanning with KAMX radar data during the period of secondary eyewall intensification and inner eyewall weakening from 19 UTC 6 October to 00 UTC 7 October. Four passes of the P-3 aircraft show the evolution of the reflectivity, tangential winds and secondary circulation as the outer eyewall became well-established. Further evolution of the ERC is analyzed through reflectivity and tangential wind derived from the single ground-based Doppler radar observations for 35 hours with high temporal resolution every 6 minutes from 19 UTC 6 October to 00 UTC 8 October using the Generalized Velocity Track Display (GVTD) technique. The single-Doppler analyses indicate that the inner eyewall decayed a few hours after the P-3 flight, while the outer eyewall contracted but did not reintensify and the asymmetries increased episodically. The analysis suggests that the resilient outer eyewall was influenced by both environmental vertical wind shear and an internal vortex Rossby wave damping mechanism during the ERC evolution

The Kingdom of God in the Gospel Commentaries of St. Thomas Aquinas: Historical, Ecclesiastical and Eschatological Dimensions

Degree Awarded: Ph.D. Historical Theology. The Catholic University of AmericaThe Kingdom of God in the Gospel Commentaries of St. Thomas Aquinas: Historical, Ecclesiastical and Eschatological DimensionsMatthew L. Martin, Ph.D.Director: Joshua C. Benson, Ph.D.The preaching of the Gospel opens with the proclamation that the Kingdom of God is at hand. For two millennia, Christian theologians have been exploring the depths of that proclamation through reflection on both the Scriptures and on their great predecessors in the tradition. St. Thomas Aquinas stands as one of the greatest theologians of the Church but his understanding of the Kingdom has not been a major subject of investigation. Instead, Thomas' thought on the subject has been ignored or criticized. When it has been addressed, it has been approached almost entirely from the direction of Aquinas as a systematic theologian or philosopher, rather than as an interpreter of Scripture. The Biblical commentaries of Thomas have only recently experienced a resurgence of scholarly interest, and while many great scholars have produced fine work on numerous topics, few have yet turned to the Kingdom. This dissertation seeks to correct that lacuna by examining the Kingdom in the light of Aquinas' scriptural works, especially his commentary on the Gospel of Matthew. After exploring the Kingdom as presented in that text, it looks into his other Biblical commentaries, his broader theological works, and the Matthew commentaries of his contemporaries to provide a full examination of Aquinas' kingdom doctrine in its historical and theological context. This approach not only gives us insight into how he approaches the Bible, but also reveals a fascinating, multifaceted interpretation of the Kingdom which builds on Scripture and, in conjunction with ideas from Aristotle, Pseudo-Dionysius, Johannine mysticism and the mendicant movement, constructs a vision of the Kingdom. This vision is contemplative and evangelical, internal and ecclesiastical, focused on God and others, and manifest in multiple dimensions. Yet the Kingdom for Aquinas remains fundamentally oriented towards an eschatological vision at which the full promise of humanity is revealed and God becomes all in all

Youth civic and political participation: how Camden City can build a culture of civic engagement

    No full text
Youth civic and political participation is a challenging subject that no one seems to have an answer to solving. Voter turnout among youth populations in the United States has been pretty low outside of the 2020 and 2008 presidential elections. Specifically outside of 2020, New Jersey has seen pretty low levels of voter turnout elections. This paper seeks to examine publicly available data on youth voter turnout and engagement in Camden City, Camden County, and New Jersey. Furthermore the paper then examines three hurdles that currently exist when it comes to trying to increase civic and political engagement. The paper also looks at existing interventions that have soon some sign of success to increasing engagement among youth populations. Finally the paper seeks to find areas for further research and intervention to make improvements to civic engagement not just in the United States, but in Camden City as well.Winner, Second Place, 2024 Paul Robeson Library Undergraduate Research Award

Evaluating Time-Dependent Changes in Food Seeking Following Periods of Forced Abstinence and Associated Changes in the Nucleus Accumbens

    No full text
Incubation of craving is a phenomenon whereby responding for cues associated with reward (food and drugs) increases over extended periods of abstinence. Evaluating the mechanisms of food craving has implications in understanding how consumption of foods high in certain macronutrients (fat, sugar) may contribute to continued cravings and subsequent weight gain. The primary goals of this thesis were to examine if forced abstinence from different food rewards resulted in a continued/or delayed craving response by utilizing different behavioral designs (contingent vs non-contingent) and examining associated changes in nucleus accumbens (NAc) immediate early genes, dendritic spine density, and AMPA receptor protein expression. Food self-administration (operant conditioning), classical conditioning, and conditioned place preference (CPP) were utilize for the investigation of incubation of food craving. Abstinence from self-administration of purified pellets was the only food group to display an incubation of craving response. Self-administration of chocolate flavored pellet, sucrose, or chocolate sucrose pellets did not result in an incubation response but did result in consistent responding at all abstinence periods which was associated with elevated dendritic spine density for chocolate flavored pellets. The type of behavioral design affected association FosB labelling as rats that underwent classical conditioning displayed significantly lower FosB in the NAc compared to operant trained rats and food restricted controls. CPP for chocolate flavored pellets or milk chocolate chips showed that the type of food reward can affect the possibility of a place preference response, milk chocolate did not produce CPP. The CPP model was unable to produce an incubation of craving response which may have resulted from the rewarding properties of the food choice and number of training sessions. Exposure to rewarding cues rapidly increased GluR1 expression, but this was not specifically associated with an incubation of craving response, thus the functional significance has yet to be elucidated. The present thesis has highlighted that foods of different macronutrient composition and/or flavors and the use of different behavioral designs can affect the potential for an incubation of craving response and associated NAc changes

2019 Fall. This manuscript investigates the ways in which themes such as motherhood, family history, American history, illness, addiction, ecology, war and manual labor might all be threaded together. The desire was to incorporate all of these areas of research and interest into a project that explores how these things are intertwined and part of the same body. The connections we have to others in life, as well as the connection we have with our own identity always intersects at the body. Dive a compilation of documents (found, inherited and created), poems inspired by World War II, and recorded interviews with family. There are also the oral stories, which are another kind of inheritance passed down through generations. These poems retell the stories, but also recognize the other kinds of family histories that get passed from one generation to the next, such as hereditary illnesses, addiction and national traumas (i.e. Columbine and 9/11.) The body is ultimately the place where private and public grief intersects
