Dr Hannah Graham on Australian leadership: Integrity, relational leadership and tenacious courage of conviction
Hannah Graham talks to Victor Perton about Australian Leadership. Criminologist, author and university lecturer Dr Hannah Graham was born in Tasmania and studied and worked at the University of Tasmania, before moving to Scotland to work in the Scottish Centre for Crime and Justice Research at the University of Stirling. Hannah has worked on justice and health-related projects with the EU, the Scottish Government, the Australian Government and Tasmanian Government, and she does ongoing research and writing on innovation and justice. Identification of the sex pheromone of Nezara viridula (L.) and synthesic studies towards ephedradines A-D
The isolation of the sex pheromones from two populations of Nezara viridula (L.) is described. The sex pheromone produced by male N. viridula (L.), from France, was shown to comprise a 2:1 mixture of (Z)-2-[(1R*,3S*,4R*)-3,4-epoxy-4-methylcyclohexyl]-6-methyl-2,5-heptadiene and (Z)-2-[1R*,3R*,4S*)-3,4-epoxy-4-methylcyclohexyl]-6-methyl-2,5-heptadiene. The male sex pheronone from the Brazilian population was shown to be the single sesquiterpene, (Z)-(-)-2-[(1S,3R,4S)-3,4-epoxy-4-methylcyclohexyl]-6-methyl-2,5-heptadiene. The synthesis of all eight (E/Z)-2-(3,4-epoxy-4-methylcyclohexyl)-6-methyl-2,5-heptadiene isomers is described. Approaches towards 2-aryl-5-formyl-3-methoxy-carbonyl-2,3-dihydro-benzo[b]furans via hexahydro-benzo[b]furan intermediates have been investigated. A general procedure for the preparation of t -2-aryl-5-formyl-3-methoxy-carbonyl-2,3-dihydro-benzo[b]furans by the cyclisation of methyl 2-[2-benzyloxy-5-(dimethoxy-methyl)-phenyl]-3-aryl-3-hydroxypropionate derivatives has been developed. Model studies towards the enantioselective synthesis of the dihyrod-benzo[b]furan moieties of ephedradines A-D are described. Thus, (4R)-(+)-3-[(2R,3R)-2-(2-benzyloxyphenyl)-3-(4-benzyloxyphenyl)-3-hydroxy-1-oxopropyl]-4-isopropyl-2-oxazolidinone (165) was cyclised to give (4R)-(-)-3-[(2R,3R)-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2,3-dihydro-benzo[b]furan-3-ylcarbonyl]-4-isopropyl-R)-(-)-3-[(2R,3R)-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2,3-dihydro-benzo[b]furan-3-ylcarbonyl]-4-isopropyl-2-oxaxolidi Conditions for the condensation ofdro-benzo[b]furan-3-ylcarbonyl]-4-isopropyl-2-oxaxolidinone (166). Conditions for the condensation of boron enolates of thioesters with imines were developed. N-(tert-Butoxycarbonyl)-9-[2R*,3R*)-2-(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-5-formyl-2,3-dihydrobenzo[b]furan-3-yl-carbonyl]-12-phthalimido-4-p-toluene-4,9-diazadodecylamindihydrobenzo[b]furan moiety to the selectively protected spermine unit. The synthesis of the ephedradine alkaloid skeleton via an `imine cyclisation</p

MMP12, lung function, and COPD in high-risk populations
Hunninghake et al. (Dec. 31 issue)1 report an association between single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in MMP12 and lung function in children with asthma and in adults who smoke, as well as an association with a reduced risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in adult smokers. However, a statistical genetic association may be observed when the implicated SNP is in strong linkage disequilibrium with another ungenotyped, but “causative,” SNP, often one that is in close proximity to the implicated SNP. To determine whether their findings could be explained by linkage disequilibrium, the authors present data for neighboring genes MMP3 and MMP13. Surprisingly, the authors did not present data for MMP1 (encoding interstitial collagenase), which is adjacent to MMP3 on chromosome 11 and is closer to MMP12 than is MMP13. Moreover, MMP1 has been strongly implicated in the pathogenesis of both COPD2 and asthma.3 It is a testable hypothesis that MMP1 encodes the protease that drives lung pathology. The association described by Hunninghake et al. could be attributable to SNPs within MMP1
Graham Greene An Approach to the Novels
This study reveals Greene in a dual role as author, one who projects literary experience into his view of life and subsequently projects both his experience and its "literary" interpretation into his fiction; and it defines two phases of Greenes novels through the changing relationship between writer and protagonists. The first phase progresses from acutely sensitive, self-divided young men somewhat like the young Greene to embittered, alienated characters ostensibly at great distance from their creator. The second phase (1939) includes a series of "portraits of the artist" through which Greene confronts more directly the tensions and conflicts of his private life.Book Cover -- Half-Title -- Title -- Copyright -- Dedication -- Contents -- Introduction -- Acknowledgements -- GRAHAM GREENE -- CHAPTER ONE Protagonists of the First Phase -- YOUTH -- DIVIDED SELVES -- WOMEN AND REDEMPTION -- MARRIAGE IN THE FIRST PHASE -- THE LITERARY FRAME -- THE FIRST-PHASE PROTAGONIST AND THE AUTHOR -- CHAPTER TWO Letters and Diaries -- LETTERS TO VIVIEN -- DIARIES -- CHAPTER THREE A Gun for Sale -- A GUN FOR SALE AND BROWNING'S "CHILDE ROLAND" -- A GUN FOR SALE AND TENNYSON'S MAUD -- CHAPTER FOUR Brighton Rock -- PINKIE AS NAPOLEONIC STRATEGIST -- CHARACTERS AND NAMES -- BRIGHTON ROCK AS A FAUSTIAN NOVEL -- CHAPTER FIVE Protagonists of the Second Phase -- AGE -- CHILDREN AND CHILDHOOD -- SELF-DIVISION -- MARRIAGE IN THE SECOND PHASE -- CHAPTER SIX The Strategy of Allusion in the Second Phase -- TOWARD THE WRITER AS PROTAGONIST -- CHAPTER SEVEN Portraits of the Artist -- CHAPTER EIGHT Travels with My Aunt -- CHAPTER NINE The Honorary Consul -- CHAPTER TEN The Human Factor -- CHAPTER ELEVEN Dr. Fischer of Geneva -- CHAPTER TWELVE Monsignor Quixote -- POSTSCRIPT: "YOUR DREAM HAS BEEN YOUR LIFE. -- CHAPTER THIRTEEN The Captain and the Enemy -- FINIS -- Selected Bibliography -- (A) WORKS BY GRAHAM GREENE -- (B) CRITICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL WORKS -- Index -- Permissions Acknowledgements -- PENGUIN PUTNAM INC. -- SIMON & -- SCHUSTERThis study reveals Greene in a dual role as author, one who projects literary experience into his view of life and subsequently projects both his experience and its "literary" interpretation into his fiction; and it defines two phases of Greenes novels through the changing relationship between writer and protagonists.
