    Optimizing stakes in simultaneous bets

    No full text
We want to find the convex combination S of iid Bernoulli random variables that maximizes P(S ≥ t) for a given threshold t. Endre Csóka conjectured that such an S is an average if t ≥ p, where p is the success probability of the Bernoulli random variables. We prove this conjecture for a range of p and tGreen Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository ‘You share, we take care!’ – Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Applied Probabilit

Roulette Odds and Profits: The Mathematics of Complex Bets

    No full text
Continuing his series of books on the mathematics of gambling, the author shows how a simple-rule game such as roulette is suited to a complex mathematical model whose applications generate improved betting systems that take into account a player's personal playing criteria. The book is both practical and theoretical, but is mainly devoted to the application of theory. About two-thirds of the content is lists of categories and sub-categories of improved betting systems, along with all the parameters that might stand as the main objective criteria in a personal strategy - odds, profits and losses. The work contains new and original material not published before. The mathematical chapter describes complex bets, the profit function, the equivalence between bets and all their properties. All theoretical results are accompanied by suggestive concrete examples and can be followed by anyone with a minimal mathematical background because they involve only basic algebraic skills and set theory basics. The reader may also choose to skip the math and go directly to the sections containing applications, where he or she can pick desired numerical results from tables. The book offers no new so-called winning strategies, although it discusses them from a mathematical point of view. It does, however, offer improved betting systems and helps to organize a player's choices in roulette betting, according to mathematical facts and personal strategies. It is a must-have roulette handbook to be studied before placing your bets on the turn of either a European or American roulette wheel

    The fifth estate: last bets

    No full text
In this Fifth Estate discussion, series host Sally Warhaft is joined by anti-gambling campaigner and independent Senator Nick Xenophon and author Michaela McGuire, whose new book Last Bets examines the gaps between ethics and the law. Australians have always loved a punt – on the horses, card games, two up or the lotto – but in recent decades the prolific increase of poker machines, casinos and online betting has given us the sad ranking of number one in the world for per capita gambling losses. Problem gambling and addiction has had devastating consequences for thousands of people. For everyone else, betting has changed our social landscape and intruded in many areas of our lives we cannot control. Why do Australians love to gamble? What limits should there be on betting and advertising? What can governments and communities do to counter its ill-effects? &nbsp

Issues facing state and local government pensions

    No full text
In the U.S., there are nearly 14 million state and local government workers and six million retirees who are owed more than $2.3 trillion dollars in eventual pension payouts by more than 2,000 different governments. The author discusses the current condition of state and local pension plans, as well as the strategies that are being used to help meet pension obligations.Pensions ; Retirement

Carrier dynamics in an organic magnetic superconductor and related salts κ, λ-(BETS)2MCl4 (M = Fe, Ga)

In order to compare the carrier dynamics and reveal the origin of differences in their electrical behaviour, time-resolved reflectivity changes were measured on single crystals of the title compounds. The observed relaxation behaviour well explained their electrical behaviour, and indicated that different conduction mechanisms dominated κ-and λ-type BETS salts, irrespective of local spins, at ca. 8-100 K; the electrical behaviour of the κ-type salts is governed by relaxation times of carriers and/or density of states at the Fermi levels, while that of the λ-type salts is dominated by the latter

Correlated Parlay Betting: An Analysis of Betting Market Profitability Scenarios in College Football

    No full text
In this paper we consider the case of potential “correlated parlays” in American college football wagering.  The structure of college football games is such that games in which favorites prevail in “against-the-spread” (spread) bets are expected to be more likely to go over the posted “total” of the game. Using a longitudinal data set over the years from 2005-2015, our findings confirm this to be the case. However, to prevent bettors from utilizing this trend to profit in their wagers, many sportsbooks disallow some, or all, same-game parlay bets.  Consequently, we find that sportsbooks have generally been too conservative in refusing such bets and have thus foregone profitability in the vast majority of betting situations.  This analysis opens a new line of discussion in the area of sports market efficiency research – that of correlated parlay betting.  We consider this case and present potential directions for future research.

    BETS3[Cu-2(C2O4)(3)](CH3OH)(2): an organic-inorganic hybrid antiferromagnetic metal (BETS = bisethylene(tetraselenfulvalene))

    No full text
The organic-inorganic hybrid charge-transfer salt of BETS and a two-dimensional oxalate-metalate: BETS3[Cu-2(C2O4)(3)](CH3OH)(2) (1) was obtained by the electrochemical oxidation of neutral BETS in the presence of [(C2H5)(3)NH](2)Cu(C2O4)(2) in a C6H5Cl-CH3OH solution. 1 crystallizes in a triclinic crystal system with cell parameters: a = 8.7716(3) angstrom, b = 16.9903(6) angstrom, c = 20.5716(7) angstrom, alpha = 104.794(2)degrees,beta = 102.209(2)degrees, gamma = 92.243(2)degrees, V = 2883.1(2) angstrom(3) and P1 in 293 K. Donor layers and Jahn-Teller distorted honeycomb anions stack alternatively along the c axis in 1. The crystal structure of 1 is similar to the reported compound [BEDT-TTF](3)[Cu-2(C2O4)(3)](CH3OH)(2) (BEDT-TTF = bis(ethylene-dithio) tetrathiafulvalene, ET). Compared with the BEDT-TTF salt, the c axis expands by 2.3% at room temperature, the shorter interaction between the donor molecules increases, the room temperature conductivity increases from 4 S cm(-1) to 140 S cm(-1) and the antiferromagnetic interaction between the metal atoms with Jahn-Teller distortion through the oxalato-bridge enhances.http://gateway.webofknowledge.com/gateway/Gateway.cgi?GWVersion=2&SrcApp=PARTNER_APP&SrcAuth=LinksAMR&KeyUT=WOS:000317594600005&DestLinkType=FullRecord&DestApp=ALL_WOS&UsrCustomerID=8e1609b174ce4e31116a60747a720701Chemistry, MultidisciplinaryCrystallographySCI(E)2ARTICLE183529-35351

Realisation of green freight: a comparative analysis of alternative fuels in road freight transport: Evaluating Electric Battery Trucks, Hydrogen, and Bio-LNG trucks

    No full text
Freight transport is a crucial component of our society and economy. However, achieving sustainability in this sector is complex, due to a lack of incentives among stakeholders. The heavy-duty road transport sector is struggling to meet European emission standards. To address this issue, a research study examined the impact of combining Battery Electric Trucks (BETs), Hydrogen trucks, and Bio-Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) trucks on a network level. The study used freight simulation and refuelling location optimization through K-means to determine the cost and emissions of the system under different conditions. The results showed that Bio-LNG trucks and BETs are viable fuel options for sustainable freight transport, with Bio-LNG being immediately usable and BETs showing promise for future technological development. The study further revealed that BETs are a cost-effective and low-emission choice for short- and long-haul freight trips, particularly when using Mega Watt chargers and larger battery capacities. The research contributes to understanding the complexities of transitioning to greener freight transport and provides insights into policy implications. Future research could explore the broader social and environmental impacts of these alternative fuel options.Systems Engineering, Policy Analysis and Management (SEPAM
