Optimization of carbon ion and proton treatment plans using the raster-scanning technique for patients with unresectable pancreatic cancer

    No full text
Background: The aim of the thesis is to improve radiation plans of patients with locally advanced, unresectable pancreatic cancer by using carbon ion and proton beams. Patients and methods: Using the treatment planning system Syngo RT Planning (Siemens, Erlangen, Germany) a total of 50 treatment plans have been created for five patients with the dose schedule 15 × 3 Gy(RBE). With reference to the anatomy, five field configurations were considered to be relevant. The plans were analyzed with respect to dose distribution and individual anatomy, and compared using a customized index. Results: Within the index the three-field configurations yielded the best results, though with a high variety of score points (field setup 5, carbon ion: median 74 (range 48–101)). The maximum dose in the myelon is low (e.g. case 3, carbon ion: 21.5 Gy(RBE)). A single posterior field generally spares the organs at risk, but the maximum dose in the myelon is high (e.g. case 3, carbon ion: 32.9 Gy(RBE)). Two oblique posterior fields resulted in acceptable maximum doses in the myelon (e.g. case 3, carbon ion: 26.9 Gy(RBE)). The single-field configuration and the two oblique posterior fields had a small score dispersion (carbon ion: median 66 and 58 (range 62–72 and 40–69)). In cases with topographic proximity of the organs at risk to the target volume, the single-field configuration scored as well as the three-field configurations. Conclusion: In summary, the three-field configurations showed the best dose distributions. A single posterior field seems to be robust and beneficial in case of difficult topographical conditions and topographical proximity of organs at risk to the target volume. A setup with two oblique posterior fields is a reasonable compromise between three-field and single-field configurations

Domination And Defiance: Fathers and Daughters in Shakespeare

    No full text
Shakespeare was clearly fascinated by the relationship between fathers and daughters, for this primal bond of domination and defiance structures twenty-one of his comedies, tragedies, and romances. In a conflict that is at once social and interpersonal, Shakespeare\u27s fathers demand hierarchical obedience while their daughters affirm the new, more personal values upheld by Renaissance humanists and Puritans. In her penetrating analysis of this compelling relationship, Diane Dreher examines the underlying psychological tensions as well as the changing concepts of marriage and the family during Shakespeare\u27s time. She points to the pain and conflict caused by sex role polarization. Shakespeare\u27s possessive fathers tyrannize over their daughters, unwilling to relinquish their masculine power and control and leaving these young women with only two alternatives: paternal domination or defiance and loss of love. The logic of Shakespeare\u27s plays repudiates traditional stereotypes, showing how women like Ophelia and Desdemona are destroyed by conforming to the passive Renaissance ideal. The book concludes with a consideration of Shakespeare\u27s androgynous characters—dynamic women in doublet and hose, and fathers who become sensitive, caring, and empathetic. Shakespeare\u27s balanced characters thus reconcile the polarities within themselves and bring greater harmony to their world. Domination and Defiance is the first book on this most provocative relationship in Shakespeare. Shedding new light on the complex father-daughter bond, character, and motivation, it makes a major contribution to literary studies. Diane Elizabeth Dreher is associate professor of English at Santa Clara University and the author of The Fourfold Pilgrimage.https://uknowledge.uky.edu/upk_english_language_and_literature_british_isles/1084/thumbnail.jp

Apples and Dragon Fruits: The Determinants of Aid and Other Forms of State Financing from China to Africa

© The Author(s) (2018). Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the International Studies Association. All rights reserved. Chinese "aid" is a lightning rod for criticism. Policy-makers, journalists, and public intellectuals claim that Beijing uses its largesse to cement alliances with political leaders, secure access to natural resources, and create exclusive commercial opportunities for Chinese firms-all at the expense of citizens living in developing countries. We argue that much of the controversy about Chinese "aid" stems from a failure to distinguish between China's Official Development Assistance (ODA) and morecommercially oriented sources and types of state financing. Using a new database on China's official financing commitments to Africa from 2000 to 2013, we find that the allocation of Chinese ODA is driven primarily by foreign policy considerations, while economic interests better explain the distribution of less concessional flows. These results highlight the need for better measures of an increasingly diverse set of non-Western financial activities.link_to_OA_fulltex

Bei den fünf Shorts verhält es sich umgekehrt.INTRODUCTION High-tech products are becoming increasingly complex and must be subject to more ecological, social and ethical values. For engineers, this means a corresponding technical competence that is also oriented towards the principle of sustainability. In the context of appropriate engineering training, the Leonardian Oath formulated by Dreher (Dreher 2015) as a professional ethos, which has been in force since 2015, should be mentioned: Any engineering education must ensure that engineers are trained to use their professional design skills to fulfill their high design responsibility based on the principles of - ethical legitimacy - sustainability and - the social controllability. The question arises as to whether it is ensured that prospective engineers position themselves on the basis of the Leonardian Oath? CENTRAL QUESTION The aim of this study is to answer the question of whether the necessary (re)focusing of technical education on the aspect of sustainable action can be promoted through the production and distribution of corresponding YouTube videos. In order to determine the status quo in technical university teaching, an exemplary curriculum study is carried out on the basis of module manuals. METHODOLOGICAL APPROACH A qualitative content analysis of selected module handbooks from technical universities is carried out to highlight the problem. Based on the deficits revealed, a six-part video series is produced and published on YouTube under the link https://www.youtube.com/@HeinzLeymann-LE. This will be evaluated both quantitatively via the number of hits (general interest) and qualitatively via the comments made (YouTube comment function and emails to the author) and the content of the interviewees. OBJECTIVE The aim is to determine whether the published videos have led to a discussion about the future of engineering education and, if so, in what way. The approaches of the interviewees in the videos to be produced in the context of the Leonardian Oath and the comments on YouTube are to be evaluated. In addition, the reach of the videos and shorts to be created should be measured. RESULT In the context of enabling engineers to act ethically in a digital working environment, the compulsory and elective subjects of three universities and three colleges were examined with regard to the categories of the principles of ethical, economic, ecological, social and sustainable legitimacy. These are differently pronounced. Examination of the six films In the context of the dissemination of the Leonardian Oath, six films were created and published on YouTube. In the quantitative acceptance of the six films, no effectiveness of the working hypothesis can be proven in the context of the number of views. It should be noted that the number of views decreases continuously from film 1 to film 6. In terms of the quantitative acceptance of the six films, the working hypothesis can be shown to be partially effective in the context of viewer loyalty. In terms of qualitative acceptance, the effectiveness of the working hypothesis is demonstrable, as the interviews and comments indicate approval of the implementa-tion of the Leonardian Oath. Analysis of the five shorts Each of the five shorts shows a higher effectiveness than the six video films in the quantitative acceptance study. However, the effect is unclear because there is only one comment in relation to the qualitative study of the five shorts, which does not allow any conclusion to be drawn in the context of the implementation of the Leonardian Oath in the engineering courses. The working hypothesis can be confirmed with regard to the number of views (quantitative) of the five shorts and the audience retention of Short 3, which is higher than normal. According to the YouTube analysis, the four other shorts do not have the usual viewer retention. Films and shorts overall For the six films, the quantitative analysis in the context of the implementation of the Leonardian Oath says less than the qualitative analysis of the comments. The reverse is true for the five shorts

A study of the chiral phase transition in the nonlinear sigma model

    No full text
The finite temperature chiral phase transition is studied using the three dimensional non-linear sigma model. Numerical simulations with the U(N) ×\times U(N) and SU(N) ×\times SU(N) flavor symmetries for both two and three flavors were examined to determine the order of the phase transition. The data from the simulations in the appropriate limits was verified with calculations from the strong and weak coupling expansions. A variety of numerical techniques, including metastability analysis, reduced cumulant of the energy, and finite sized scaling were employed to determine the transition for both flavors using the U(N) ×\times U(N) and SU(N) ×\times SU(N) flavor symmetries. The results of these simulations for the finite temperature chiral phase transition and chiral symmetry restoration are summarized, and a discussion of the implications for heavy-ion collider physics and cosmology is presented.Made available in DSpace on 2011-05-07T14:03:18Z (GMT).
