Global Properties of Constant Mean Curvature Surfaces in H^2xR

    No full text
We discuss some aspects of the global behavior of surfaces in H^2xR with constant mean curvature H ( known as H-surfaces). We prove a maximum principle at infinity for complete properly embedded H-surfaces with H > 1/sqrt(2), and show that the genus of a compact stable H-surface with H > 1/sqrt(2) is at most three

Constant market shares analysis: uses, limitations and prospects

    No full text
In this paper, we generalise the constant market shares (CMS) framework, with particular attention to the underlying theoretical conditions required for diagnostic interpretation. The approach is applied to the analysis of the export performance of the Australian processed food sector in South-East Asia over the period 1980–2003. We conclude that the usefulness of CMS analysis for evaluating a country’s international trade performance depends upon the empirical validity of the aggregation assumptions implicit in the diagnostic interpretation.aggregation, Armington model, competitiveness, constant market shares, Marketing,

DETERMINATION OF H-ALPHA,H-BETA AND H-BETA,C' COUPLING-CONSTANTS IN C-13 LABELED PROTEINS

A sensitive method to assign H(beta) protons stereospecifically as well as to determine rotamer populations about chi1 in two 3D experiments is presented. The SOFT-HCCH-COSY experiment allowed us to measure the 3J(H(beta),C') couplings, using constant time evolution of C(alpha) in t2 and C(aliphatic)-selective decoupling during t3. The SOFT-HCCH-E.COSY experiment allowed us to measure the 3J(H(alpha),H(beta)) couplings, using constant time evolution of C(alpha) in t2, a small flip angle H-1 excitation pulse in the second mixing time, and double-band-selective decoupling (aliphatic and carbonyl carbons) during t3. The method was applied to ribonuclease T1

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Arguments for a Hubble constant near H-0=55

Recent analyses of Cepheid distances to spiral galaxies have led to the announcement of a Hubble constant of H-0 = 72 +/- 8 km s(-1) Mpc(-1). The new Cepheid distances, however, show that there are numerous redshift distances with large excesses that cannot be due to peculiar velocities. Ignoring these discordant redshifts, if the Hubble constant is calibrated with Cepheid distances of low-redshift spirals, then a value near H-0 = 55 is obtained. Use of independent distance criteria such as Tully-Fisher and group membership verifies this value and leads to three conclusions: ( 1) the peculiar velocities of galaxies in space are characteristically small; (2) Sc companions to normal Sb galaxies tend to be less luminous, with younger stellar populations and small amounts of nonvelocity redshift; and (3) ScI and other purportedly overluminous spiral galaxies have large amounts of intrinsic redshift

    On constant elasticities of demand

    No full text
While the Slutsky matrix and duality theory have been used to establish that constant elasticity demand functions imply unitary income elasticities, zero cross price elasticities and own price elasticities equal to minus one, this note shows that these results can also be straightforwardly derived from the simple assumption that demand functions satisfy the budget constraint with strict equality.
