Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
The term “adult neurogenesis” describes the continuous generation of cohorts
of new neurons in some discrete regions of the adult brain, such as the
dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. Adult hippocampal neurogenesis (ahNG) has
been shown as relevant for typical functions of this brain areal (e.g. memory
consolidation), but also influences social behavior and has medical relevance.
The exact dynamics of this neuronal development are still unknown, as are
psychosocial impacts on this process. To analyze the temporal pattern of ahNG
and quantify the development of the new neurons we analyzed the relative and
absolute numbers of cells in all known stages of the neural differentiation,
from stem cell phase towards neurons, in mice at different time points after
BrdU injection. BrdU permanently labels cells during S-phase of the cell cycle
and enabled us to follow a cohort of new cells over time, thus, here a pseudo-
longitudinal study was performed. Subsequently, first studies on the relation
between social factors and ahNG in mammals are presented. Regulation of the
neuronal development is related to, and dependent on inputs from the outer
environment. A connection between ahNG and social environment has been
demonstrated previously, but detailed information on the altered
differentiation process is missing. In the first part of this thesis I present
detailed information on the progression of distinct cell types through the
differentiation process of ahNG. Transitions over time are observed allowing
the estimation of cell cycle length (CCL) for each cell type involved in ahNG.
I found, that the individual cell types are more flexible than assumed before.
In the second part, I investigate the impact of social housing, (behavioral
relevant) auditori stimuli and stress on ahNG. While the positive factors were
applied to healthy subjects, I used the stress paradigm in the GR+/- mice
model of depression. Flexible adaptations of different stages in ahNG were
also found in these studies on social factors. Each single stimulator affected
individual differentiation stages in characteristic ways. While group size,
music, silence and pup calls increase BrdU cell counts in proliferation
analyses, with distinct effects on each mitotic differentiation stage, does
only silence increase survival of new neurons. In the GR+/- mouse model I
found decreased ahNG, without any effect on the proportion of neurogenesis or
gliogenesis. Based on the information obtained about the dynamics of ahNG a
new, innovative model of ahNG is proposed, pushing type-1 and type-2a cells in
the center of attention, while diminishing the weight of type-3 cells for the
process of differentiation. Type-1 cells, previously assumed as origin of
neurogenesis in the hippocampus, are here hypothesized as safeguard of the
system, while type-2a cells, highly proliferative, giving rise to gliogenesis
and neurogenesis, are hypothesized as the origin of ahNG under normal, healthy
conditions. The additional studies give some indications for changes of the
model caused by different social factors. The aim is to draw attention to the
importance and impact of social environment on adult neurogenesis, brain
plasticity and mental health. Thus, future studies will focus more on the
promising field of ahNG.Der Begriff “Adulte Neurogenese” beschreibt die kontinuierliche Generierung
Falle sozialer Stimulation aufgezeigt.
In
anderen Studien zeigen konnten.
Steps of mental representation in Keas (Nestor notabilis)
Based on the cognitive model of the philosopher Joëlle Proust (2000) three
experimental setups with Keas (Nestor notabilis) raised in Zoological Gardens
were conducted to inverstigate their stage of mental representation. The
parrots reached the highest testing level of object permanence (stage 6b,
invisible emplacement), with males performing better than females. After a
short training session with a touchscreen six of nine subjects were able to
distinguish between images of ‘Keas’ and inanimate objects. Independent of
image size, the Keas touched the wings and the feet of the picture
significantly more than expected by chance. In the third experimental setup
using a modified mirror test designed by Gallup (1970) three of seven
individuals behaved in a way consistent with mirror recognition. These results
suggest, that Keas reach the highest level of the cognitive model and have at
least a simple kind of mental representation of self. Further research is
needed to investigate the level of consciousness and self-awareness in Keas
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
Characterization of molecular mechanisms in non-Mendelian inheritance in the mouse
-Haplotyps in cis verursacht.
jedoch erst in elongierten Spermatiden nachgewiesen.
Males heterozygous for the t -haplotype, a variant form of chromosome 17 in
the mou- se, transmit the t -chromosome to up to 99 % of their offspring. This
phenomenon relies on the formation of two sperm populations that exhibit
differences in motili- ty. The difference is caused by the cis -action of the
t -haplotype specific responder Smok1Tcr suggesting that the products of the
responder gene are restricted to one population of spermatozoa. The aim of the
pro ject was to investigate, how the responder ’s selective action on t -sperm
causes non-mendelian inheritance of the t -haplotype. For answering this
question I first analyzed the distribution of the gene products of Smok1Tcr to
haploid cells in testes of hemizygous transgenic animals. I could show that
the transcript is postmeiotically expressed and remains restricted to a
subpopu- lation of round spermatids. The protein was first detected in
elongated spermatids. Hence, mRNA is sub ject to translational repression for
approximately 10 days. This regulatory mechanism is often accompanied by
transcript tethering to defined sub- cellular structures. The analysis of the
distribution of Smok1Tcr protein in spermatozoa showed restric- tion of the
protein to a subset of sperm of hemizygous transgenic males. This experi- ment
strongly suggests that t/+ heterozygous males form two phenotypically
different sperm populations due to cellular restriction of Smok1Tcr protein.
In summary, the most likely mechanism for cis -action of the responder is
haploid expression of the gene, tethering of the mRNA preventing exchange
within the syn- cytium and translational repression until the haploid cells
become isolated. To identify the elements that might cause translational
repression I functionally ana- lyzed the 5’ and 3’UTR of Smok1Tcr in vivo.
These experiments suggest that the 3’UTR modulates translation of the mRNA,
whereas the 5’UTR seems essential for correct gene expression and function. In
vitro experiments for the characterization of putative cis -regulatory
elements showed that the 5’UTR mediates translational repression. The
principle mechanism that underlies the restriction of the responder gene
products to a sperm subpopulation also seems to apply to the wildtype Smok
genes. This in- dicates that other yet unidentified systems of non-mendelian
inheritance might exist
