What do we mean when we say casualisation of farm work is rising?: Evidence from fruit farms in the Western Cape

    No full text
Du Toit & Ally's (2003) results on the casualisation of farm work in the Western Cape confirmed the worst fears of sociologists: Globalisation and/or labour laws increased casualisation in agriculture. New labour data and a study conducted in 1976 allow one to revisit the casualisation result for the table grape industry of the Hex River Valley. This paper resolves imprecise definitions of regular versus permanent status, and of casual versus seasonal status. It also examines casualisation and job shedding. Results show a decrease in the share of seasonal work and no change in the casual component of seasonal work. The job status of most farm women in the Valley improved as a result of legislative changes implemented since 1994. Outsourcing is present but insignificant at this point. On the whole data for the table grape industry of the Hex River Valley does not support the hypothesis that globalisation and labour market reform caused dramatic increases in casualisation.Farm labour markets, horticulture, Western Cape, Crop Production/Industries, Labor and Human Capital,

Exploring critical failure modes in the rail environment and the consequential costs of unplanned maintenance

CITATION: Conradie, P. D. F. & Treurnicht, N. F. 2012. Exploring critical failure modes in the rail environment and the consequential costs of unplanned maintenance. In CIE42 Proceedings, 15-18 July 2012, Cape Town, South Africa. This study explores in-service failure modes for rolling stock in the rail environment, identifies the most critical failures and explores the consequential cost of these failure modes. Rolling stock is maintained according to maintenance plans with a major goal being the prevention of in-service failures, but due to the nature of the equipment not all failures can be prevented. In-service failures normally result in train delays or the cancellations of trains not only disrupting commuter services but also causing financial losses. The typical failures of rolling stock are analysed using data from the facility maintenance management system. The critical failure modes are identified and classified according to cause, severity, consequence and frequency parameters. A decision model is employed to classify the criticality of the failure modes. The most prominent critical failure modes are analysed to determine root causes, to conclude the investigation. Areas are identified where the focus of future investigation and planned maintenance will have the most significant impact.Post prin

    Variations on the Author

    No full text
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

DFT and CV data of 4-phenyl-substituted dichloro(bis{2-[1-(phenyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl-κN3]pyridine-κN})iron(II) coordination compounds

© 2018 The Authors. The data presented in this paper are related to the research article entitled “Synthesis, characterisation and electrochemistry of eight Fe coordination compounds containing substituted 2-(1-(4-R-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)pyridine ligands, R=CH3, OCH3, COOH, F, Cl, CN, H and CF3.” (Conradie et al., 2019) [1]. This paper presents electrochemical and density functional theory data of 4-phenyl-substituted dichloro(bis{2-[1-(4-R-phenyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl-κN3]pyridine-κN})iron(II) compounds, containing differently substituted 2-(1-(4-R-phenyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-1-yl)pyridine ligands (L2 – L9) (Tawfiq et al., 2014) [2]. Density functional theory calculated data of five different structural isomers for each compound, consistently show that the title compounds are octahedral and that the isomer with the chloride atoms, the pyridine nitrogens and the triazol nitrogens trans to each other, has the lowest energy. Natural bonding orbital (NBO) data and quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) data of dichloro(bis{2-[1-(phenyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl-κN3]pyridine-κN})iron(II) show origin for the preference of the trans isomer

Also By The Same Author: AKTiveAuthor, a Citation Graph Approach to Name Disambiguation

    No full text
The desire for definitive data and the semantic web drive for inference over heterogeneous data sources requires co-reference resolution to be performed on those data. In particular, name disambiguation is required to allow accurate publication lists, citation counts and impact measures to be determined. This paper describes a graph-based approach to author disambiguation on large-scale citation networks. Using self-citation, co-authorship and document source analyses, AKTiveAuthor clusters papers, achieving precision of 0.997 and recall of 0.818 over a test group of eight surname clusters

Synthesis, characterisation and electrochemistry of eight Fe coordination compounds containing substituted 2-(1-(4-R-phenyl-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl)pyridine ligands, R = CH3, OCH3, COOH, F, Cl, CN, H and CF3

Eight different Dichloro(bis{2-[1-(4-R-phenyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl-κN3]pyridine-κN})iron(II) compounds, 2–9, have been synthesised and characterised, where group R = CH3 (L2), OCH3 (L3), COOH (L4), F (L5), Cl (L6), CN (L7), H (L8) and CF3 (L9). The single crystal X-ray structure was determined for the L3 which was complemented with Density Functional Theory calculations for all complexes. The structure exhibits a distorted octahedral geometry, with the two triazole ligands coordinated to the iron centre positioned in the equatorial plane and the two chloro atoms in the axial positions. The values of the FeII/III redox couple, observed at ca. −0.3 V versus Fc/Fc+ for complexes 2–9, varied over a very small potential range of 0.05 V. The observation that the different R substituents have virtually no effect on the values of the FeII/III redox couple for all eight complexes 2–9, is explained by the character of the highest molecular orbitals of complexes 2–9, which do not show any communication of electron density between the various ligands and the metal Fe. However, the HOMOs of the free ligands L2 – L9, display extended π-character over the entire ligand, explaining the sensitivity of the 1H NMR C–H-triazole peak, which is dependent on the electron donating/withdrawing power of the R substituent attached to the 2-[1-(4-R-phenyl)-1H-1,2,3-triazol-4-yl]pyridine ligands
