Conner House Before and After Restoration
In 1934 Eli Lilly, Indianapolis businessman, president of the Indiana Historical Society, and longtime friend of Indiana history, purchased the house and about 400 acres of farmland. This allowed him to combine his historical pursuits with his interest in farming. He set out immediately to preserve and restore the house. Historic preservation was in its infancy during the 1930s; Lilly did all he could to familiarize himself with aims, objectives and techniques of the work.Use of this image is restricted to projects related to Destination Indiana. William Conner
William Conner grew up north of Detroit in close contact with Indians. In 1800 he and his brother moved to Indiana and established a trading post in Delaware Town on the White River. He married the daughter of a chief and was known for fair dealings with Indians. Conner’s log house became a landmark for Delaware Indians and newly arriving settlers in central Indiana. Officially licensed as a trader, he served as a liaison between the government and Native Americans.Use of this image is restricted to projects related to Destination Indiana. Trading Post and Cabin at Conner Prairie Interactive History Park
In 1963 Lilly decided to convey Conner Prairie Farm to Earlham College with the stipulation that the Conner house and the 58 surrounding acres be maintained in perpetuity and be open to the public. Lilly was interested in the educational potential of the property. In 1969 planning began for a pioneer village depicting the early 1800s. In the early 1970s major expansion began by moving additional old buildings to the site and laying out a village appropriate to the Indiana frontier of 1836.Use of this image is restricted to projects related to Destination Indiana. Eli Lilly and Conner Prairie Farm Associates
Lilly wanted to have the experience and challenges farming brought. He sought expert agricultural advice and insisted that his employees “work with the team spirit of an Indiana basketball aggregation.” His farm animals won ribbons, but the farm never turned a profit, so eventually he embarked on a different course that would provide for the future of the property as a historic site.Use of this image is restricted to projects related to Destination Indiana.
