The Benefits of Being Economics Professor A (and not Z)

    No full text
Alphabetic name ordering on multi-authored academic papers, which is the convention in the economics discipline and various other disciplines, is to the advantage of people whose last name initials are placed early in the alphabet. As it turns out, Professor A, who has been a first author more often than Professor Z, will have published more articles and experienced afaster growth rate over the course of her career as a result of reputation and visibility. Moreover, authors know that name ordering matters and indeed take ordering seriously: Several characteristics of an author group composition determine the decision to deviate from the default alphabetic name order to a significant extent.performance measurement, incentives, economists, name ordering

LEGACIES AND ZOMBIE. WHY YOU SHOULD SUPPORT SHORT-TERM PROGNOSES WITH THE ANALYSIS OF LONG-TERM PHENOMENA.

    No full text
The author claims that Tucker’s “Legacies of Totalitarianism” is extremely important for the studies of post-communism in Central and Eastern Europe as well as for philosophy of history, which – from the post-Hegelian times on – has avoided holistic approaches. According to the author, Tucker adequately identifiestransnational components of the region’s current identity, rooted in the abovementioned “legacies” (middle-range processes that started in the communist era). The author also notes that inadequacy of some prognoses that Tucker puts forward based on his own theory stems from his negligence of the prognostic weight of certain socio-psychological laws and long-term processes

Permutacje rzeczywistości: nowe oblicze wirtualnej rzeczywistości w powieści Grega Egana

    No full text
The article is a detailed study of the concept of virtual reality as portrayed in Permutation City, a 1994 novel by an Australian science fi ction author Greg Egan. The objective of the argument is to show how contemporary science fi ction literature portrays the shift in perception of reality brought about by the growing importance of cyberspace and computer generated environments in today’s world. Detailed analysis of the original text and critical sources is used to explain the author’s scientific claims behind the central to the novel “dust theory” of multiple universes, and how this theory might be used to discredit the virtual vs. real distinction. The results thus obtained show that the novel is more of a serious thought experiment based on actual theories of quantum physics and quantum ontology than just a literary game designed primarily to amuse the reader.

Televisual Authorship and Comedy Showrunners: The Case of Greg Daniels

    No full text
The article focuses on Greg Daniels, the acclaimed comedy showrunner whose credits include the US version of The Office (NBC, 2005-2013) as well as King of the Hill (Fox, 1997-2010), Space Force (Netflix, 2020-2022), and Upload (Amazon, 2020-). The author analyses press and podcast interviews with Daniels and his co-workers, as well as other articles connected to the showrunner and his works, supplementing them with quotes from a previously unpublished in-depth interview. The central emphasis lies on Daniels’s creative methods, situated within the broader context of television and streaming shows authorship. The sources are interpreted with the help of methods characteristic of the critical media industry studies and utilize Jason Mittell’s model of authorship by management

Evaluation of triple-frequency radar retrieval of snowfall properties using coincident airborne in-situ observations during olympex

    No full text
Particle scattering models have shown that aggregates and spherical particles occupy distinct regions of the Ku-Ka-W-band Dual-Frequency Ratio (DFR) plane. Furthermore, ground-based observations suggest that particle bulk density and characteristic size can be retrieved from the DFR plane. This is the first study to evaluate the retrieval of particle shape, bulk density and characteristic size using airborne triple-frequency radar observations coincident with airborne in-situ microphysical measurements. Data from the Olympic Mountains Experiment (OLYMPEX) resulted in 2.2 hours of observations that showed the Ku-Ka-W DFR plane offered little unambiguous information about particle shape. Analysis of a case study on 3 December 2015 is consistent with a past modeling study, showing increased bulk density with increased DFR between the Ka- and W-band. Meanwhile, bulk statistics are consistent with a past observational study, showing the potential retrieval of effective density and characteristic size from the DFR Ku-Ka-W plane.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2020-05-01The student, Randy Chase, accepted the attached license on 2018-04-17 at 20:22.The student, Randy Chase, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2018-04-17 at 20:30.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2018-04-18 at 09:22.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #12330 on 2018-08-31 at 17:20:23Made available in DSpace on 2018-09-04T20:36:43Z (GMT). „Łatwiejsza i bardziej przyjemna” – „Nie-Boska komedia” w szkolnym wydaniu

    No full text
The aim of the article is to discuss the most important school editions of Zygmunt Krasiński’s Nie-Boska komedia, which are used by modern high school students. Nie-Boska komedia has been on the reading list for secondary school students for over a hundred years. Before the 1932 reform, the drama was a compulsory reading in the 8th grade of middle school, and is currently being discussed in Polish secondary schools as a compulsory reading from Polish (basic level).            In the 21st century pupils, when familiarizing themselves with Nie-Boska komedia, most frequently reach for so-called editions with elaboration, which are the final level of evolution for books from the school reading list, as a manifestation of a dangerous tendency to replace direct contact with a book with various auxiliary elements (summaries, comments, motifs etc.). Among them, the most popular one is the edition which was published as part of the series entitled “School reading with elaboration” by Cracow’s Greg Publishing House and is systematically re-published. The edition of Nie-Boska komedia from the “School reading with elaborations” series should be firmly considered as an editorial crime: both in terms of the level of elaboration and the graphic design. The article discusses all dubious decisions of the elaboration’s author, which allowed to demonstrate that the edition does not meet the requirements set for school editions, concerning all levels of preparing an edition (textological rules, modernization of spelling and punctuation, structuring the commentary). The second edition of Krasiński’s drama discussed in the presented article is the edition of Nie-Boska komedia made available in Wolne Lektury online library. It was developed on the basis of the edition prepared by Maria Janion and Maria Grabowska with a digital reproduction made by the National Library. It is undoubtedly the best and quite carefully prepared edition of Krasiński’s drama from among the editions made available on the Internet, although it can also indicate places that need improvement or completion. Jest to bez wątpienia najlepsze i dość starannie opracowane wydanie dramatu Krasińskiego spośród edycji udostępnianych w internecie, choć można i tu wskazać miejsca wymagające poprawy bądź uzupełnienia

I am incredibly honoured to have the opportunity to speak on behalf of my classmates. Today, we unite for one of the final times, to celebrate our experiences, part with our past, and encourage each other to go out and face the world with bravery.Graduation is turning the last page of a novel, and delving into the sequel with anticipation. It is hopes and goals and dreams, which have been formed from experiences of the past. Up until this point, our stories have bared countless similarities. We have all experienced the frustration of attempting to learn long division, struggled with the pronunciation of big words, he fear of cooties, and the heartache of being in first grade, when you’re convinced that the cute fifth grader who pushed you on the tire swing at recess is your soulmate. We have experienced loss together, and middle-school drama that once felt like the end of the world. We have faced disappointment, and we have stood together as each of us attempted to figure out who we were and who we are meant to be. Together we have also experienced joy, and the satisfaction that accompanies getting an A on an exam. We all know the type of laughter that ties your stomach into knots and steals the breath right out of your lungs. We have grown into young women and men, and written our stories, together. It is here, today, where we part ways, and begin work on our own novels, the rest of our lives promising to be the product of the decisions we have already made, our accomplishments, our desires, and the choices we will continue to make inthe future. At this point, I would like to extend thanks to our parents. As children, we begged you to check for monsters beneath our beds, and kiss our bumps and bruises better. When we fell from our bikes, you applied bandages with loving hands, and set us back on our feet, convincing us to try again, and always refusing to put the training wheels back on, because you had faith that we could do it. From the very start, you have made it your goal to prepare us for the inevitable future. You have taught us valuable life lessons, and encouraged us in our endeavours, never failing to show pride in our accomplishments. Although we might not always admit it, we are incredibly thankful that we had you to depend on, while growing up. I would also like to thank the many teachers who have devoted their time to teaching us everything we need to know, in order to face the world and succeed. You have become so much more than educators; you have become role models, and more importantly, you have become friends. Some of the best memories we hold as students were created within the confines of your classrooms. I, for one, will never forget a single biology lesson, thanks to Luch's inventive teaching techniques, and I will always remember the simple act of reading Shakespeare aloud, Chomany whispering in the background, encouraging us to read with more expression, adding ghost sounds, and flickering lights to set the atmosphere. Escaping the limitations of high school to chase our dreams, wherever they may take us, brings the promise of new friends, new experiences, and numerous opportunities, which we will all be eager to take. However, as we move forward in our lives, we must always remember the people and experiences that helped shape and define us. We must remember the friends that laughed with us, cried with us, and stood with us while we experienced the best days of our lives. We will continue to learn, outside the walls of W.R. Myers, however, what we learn is not nearly as important as who we learn it with. The purpose of life is not to discover all the secrets of the universe; it is to find happiness, and happiness is simply unachievable, unless you are surrounded by good friends, and a supportive family. Our future is quickly approaching, and many of us are still uncertain of our destination. We cannot predict where we will end up ten years down the road, but we can move forward with the knowledge that we are all capable of great things. Some us will fall in love, build families, while others will escape into the work force and pour their knowledge into a career that will drive the economy, and perhaps, some will even go on to change the world. We are all capable. If there ever comes a moment when you begin to doubt your abilities, look back on your past experiences, and remember your accomplishments. We have already made it so far, and our lives have just barely begun. Be courageous, and imaginative. Continue making mistakes, as long as you continue to learn fromthem, and, in the words of Confucius, “wherever you go, go with all your heart.” Thank you. We have been together through loss, hardship and realities that are catastrophic to the teenage psyche. But through these hard times each and every student’s character and ability to cope with difficult circumstances has developed and helped us grow into the strong individuals that we are as we leave this school. Myers is full of dynamic personalities that are each unique but share similarities that are connected through our high school experiences. Although we have faced difficulty together we have also known our fair share of good times; from classroom laughs to sporting triumphs to the friendships that we have built that will last a lifetime.
