Strong selection maintains a narrow, stable tension zone between grosbeak species in the Great Plains
When genetically divergent and geographically isolated lineages come back into contact, their interactions allow us to observe reproductive isolating barriers in action. The avian contact zone between Pheucticus melanocephalus and P. ludovicianus in the North American Great Plains has been studied for more than 60 years, but never with the aid of genomic data. Here, we generate reduced-representation genome sequence data from a transect in South Dakota spanning pure P. melanocephalus to pure P. ludovicianus. While the presence of recent-generation hybrids and backcrosses confirms the ongoing production of fertile F1 offspring, the narrow (48-61 km) and concordant geographic transitions in nuclear ancestry, mitochondrial ancestry, and male plumage phenotypes are hallmarks of a "tension zone" where selection against hybrids is balanced by immigration of parental individuals. Additionally, the bimodal distribution of genomic ancestry in the heart of the contact zone and the highly significant association between genomic and mitochondrial ancestry both suggest a role for intrinsic genetic incompatibilities in the maintenance of this species boundary. Overall, we infer that strong selection maintains a narrow region of geographic contact between P. melanocephalus and P. ludovicianus in the Great Plains despite ongoing hybridization and introgression
with low to moderate mitochondrial sequence divergence
All mitochondrial-encoded proteins and RNAs function through interactions with nuclear-encoded proteins, which are critical for mitochondrial performance and eukaryotic fitness. Coevolution maintains inter-genomic (i.e., mitonuclear) compatibility within a taxon, but hybridization can disrupt coevolved interactions, resulting in hybrid breakdown. Thus, mitonuclear incompatibilities may be important mechanisms underlying reproductive isolation and, potentially, speciation. Here we utilize Pool-seq to assess the effects of mitochondrial genotype on nuclear allele frequencies in fast- and slow-developing reciprocal inter-population F2 hybrids between relatively low-divergence populations of the intertidal copepod Tigriopus californicus. We show that mitonuclear interactions lead to elevated frequencies of coevolved (i.e., maternal) nuclear alleles on two chromosomes in crosses between populations with 1.5% or 9.6% fixed differences in mitochondrial DNA nucleotide sequence. However, we also find evidence of excess mismatched (i.e., non-coevolved) alleles on three or four chromosomes per cross, respectively, and of allele frequency differences consistent with effects involving only nuclear loci (i.e., unaffected by mitochondrial genotype). Thus, our results for low-divergence crosses suggest an underlying role for mitonuclear interactions in variation in hybrid developmental rate, but despite substantial effects of mitonuclear coevolution on individual chromosomes, no clear bias favouring coevolved interactions overall

The influence of temperature on courtship and mate choice in a wolf spider: implications for mating success in variable environments
The selection of animal signal form often changes significantly with the environment, yet signal form may be environment-dependent. Little is known about how variation in individual responses to changing environments affects the relationship between selection and the subsequent evolution of signal traits. To address this question, we assess the effects of variation in temperature on individual signaling and mating behavior responses across temperatures in the wolf spider Schizocosa floridana. By running repeated-measures trials, we find that temperature has predictable effects on signal form, but that the performance of individual courters is not consistent across temperatures. Traits associated with courtship rate generally increase at higher temperatures but inter-individual consistency in response to temperature change is low, despite consistent female preferences for increased courtship rate at all temperatures. Interestingly, the production of the likely most recently evolved signal component, the chirp, is consistent within signalers and predicts male performance across temperatures. Despite this, female preferences for chirp duration appear only at higher temperatures. Taken together, our results suggest that individual courter responses to changing temperatures have the potential to dampen or eliminate patterns of selection that are evident across temperatures. We discuss these results in light of current research on mating behavior and sexual selection

Polygenic response of sex chromosomes to sexual antagonism
Sexual antagonism occurs when males and females differ in their phenotypic fitness optima but are constrained in their evolution to these optima because of their shared genome. The sex chromosomes, which have distinct evolutionary "interests" relative to the autosomes, are theorized to play an important role in sexually antagonistic conflict. However, the evolutionary responses of sex chromosomes and autosomes have usually been considered independently, that is, via contrasting the response of a gene located on either an X chromosome or an autosome. Here, we study the coevolutionary response of the X chromosome and autosomes to sexually antagonistic selection acting on a polygenic phenotype. We model a phenotype initially under stabilizing selection around a single optimum, followed by a sudden divergence of the male and female optima. We find that, in the absence of dosage compensation, the X chromosome promotes evolution toward the female optimum, inducing coevolutionary male-biased responses on the autosomes. Dosage compensation obscures the female-biased interests of the X, causing it to contribute equally to male and female phenotypic change. We further demonstrate that fluctuations in an adaptive landscape can generate prolonged intragenomic conflict and accentuate the differential responses of the X and autosomes to this conflict
Suppression of sex-ratio drive in Drosophila subobscura
Selfish genetic elements enjoy an evolutionary advantage by enhancing their own transmission to offspring, and their genetic suppressors are favored when they re-establish fair inheritance patterns. Here, we study an X-linked sex ratio drive system (SR) in Drosophila subobscura, which kills Y-bearing sperm of SR males, resulting in the over-transmission of the SR chromosome and a strong female bias in their offspring. We surveyed D. subobscura populations in North Africa, which naturally harbor SR, and found that suppression occurs in ∼13.5% of wild-derived lines. We characterize this suppression phenotype through a series of crossing experiments, including multigenerational introgression of SR chromosomes into a suppressing genetic background. We show that introgression can restore normal offspring sex ratios or, in some cases, result in an excess of male offspring. This suppression appears to be a multilocus trait, involving autosomes and the Y chromosomes. Suppression of SR fails to ameliorate all costs of drive, with fully suppressed SR-carrying males having depressed fertility and low offspring egg hatch rates. Further examination of internal male reproductive organs using microscopy suggests that suppressed SR males also have abnormal testes. These factors may explain why the suppression fails to reach high frequencies, despite the strong advantage of suppressing SR
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
