Imperialismo giuridico e concessioni minerarie in Cina La concessione mineraria nel Zhejiang (1899-1907)
From the second half of the 19th century, China began to be incorporated into a multi-state informal imperialist system, in the form of a network of territorial concessions: specifically port, railway and mining ones. Meanwhile, Chinese legal institutions underwent a profound transformation toward Western legal principles, thanks to both the internal pressure of reformist officials and the external pressure of foreign powers, whose goal was to make Chinese market malleable and widely accessible. The first half of this essay consists in a general introduction to the system of the mining concessions in China and to the Chinese mining code\u27s reform. The second half - through a case study, the Zhejiang concession - aims to show how the reform of Chinese mining law has been exploited to make Chinese mines less accessible and to put them under the sovereign protection of the state. From the second half of the 19th century, China began to be incorporated into a multi-state informal imperialist system, in the form of a network of territorial concessions: specifically port, railway and mining ones. China, United States, COVID-19 and the long-standing question of human rights: problems of a dichotomous approach
The paper aims to argue that the conflictual debate on human rights between China
and United States is characterized by a dichotomous approach which still reflects
a Cold War logic and can have a detrimental impact on the full understanding
of social, economic, political processes which are undergoing during our age. The
argument has been built through a case-study on US-China public discourses on
COVID-19 and human rights, which posits that a dichotomous approach has prevented an objective reading of the pandemic processes underway and thus influenced
the health crisis’ management on both sides
China 2020: the successful struggle against the COVID-19 pandemic and the Xinjiang question
The year 2020, more than any other previous year, posed serious questions about the nature of the Chinese state and society and their relations with the world. China was the first global epicentre of the COVID-19 pandemic and, in fighting it, demonstra-ted a highly effective management of the health emergency crisis. Differently from what happened in Europe or the United States, during the period under review daily life in China went back to normal. Nonetheless, this did not translate into a more positive view of China world-wide as, in the same period, international newspapers, magazines and international organizations dealt extensively with Beijing’s repressive politics in Xinjiang and the establishment of «re-education camps» there. This article, then, firstly analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of Beijing’s pandemic manage-ment, without overlooking its strategy of control and repression of public opinion. Secondly, it provides a synthetic overview of Beijing’s policies towards the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. In doing this an analysis of the latest reports on «re-education camps» and the Chinese government’s reaction to them is offered
Industrializzazione e lavoro a Taiwan. La mobilitazione operaia negli anni della democratizzazione
This essay will focus on the processes of industrialization and democratization in
Taiwan. Labour and workers are placed at the center of the analysis in order to offer a different perspective from that prevailing in developmental studies. At the same time, it will highlight the decisive role played by the relationship between Taiwanese and Mainland Chinese in defining and framing the characteristics of industrialization, democratization and workers’ mobilizations in Taiwan. The research has, in fact, highlighted that the traditional capital-labour conflict was weakened and partially replaced by the expansion of identity conflicts

China 2018: Bringing the Party Back into State Institutions
This article attempts to explain how and why the year 2018 represented a major turning point for Chinese domestic politics, characterized by the transition from a collective authoritarianism to a centralized, repressive and personalistic authoritarian leadership. It analyses the institutionalization and systematic legalization of the centralized Communist party’s authority in the political, economic and social sphere. For this purpose, the article contains a description of the major 2018 institutional reforms, through which the Chinese leadership rebuilt its centralized authoritarianism into state and social institutions. Much attention has been devoted to the establishment of party and state supervisory commissions, the establishment of «super ministers», the reinforcement of political Marxist education, and the subordination of judicial power to the party’s will. Furthermore, the paper argues that one of the main reasons behind the creation of this repressive and authoritarian stance was the emergence of multiple sources of social and political instability. The final part of the article focuses on the beginnings of an embryonic alliance between workers and students and on the increase of nationwide strikes
