Habemus Papam ?Polarization and Conflict in the Papal States

    No full text
We study the effect of divisions within the elite on the probability of internalconflict in the Papal States between 1295 and 1846. We assemble a new databaseusing information on cardinals that participated in conclaves during this period, and construct measures of polarization and fractionalization based on the cardinals’places of birth. The deaths of popes and cardinals provide plausible exogenousvariation in the timing of the conclave and the composition of the Collegeof Cardinals, which we exploit to analyze the causal effect of a divided conclaveon conflict. We find that an increase of one standard deviation in our measure ofpolarization raised the likelihood of internal conflict by between 2 and 3 percentin a given year and by up to 18 percent in a given papacy. The effect is largestin the initial years after the conclave, to gradually vanish over time. Our resultsconfirm that cardinals’ influence on the politics of the Papal States decreased afterreforms introduced between 1586 and 1588. Our measure of religious productivity, however, is negatively and significantly linked to polarization in the post-reformperiod. These reforms were successful in shifting the effect of divisions among theelite of one of the largest and oldest organizations from violent conflict to religiousmatters.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishe

Λ-enhanced grey molasses on the D 2 transition of Rubidium-87 atoms

    No full text
Laser cooling based on dark states, i.e. states decoupled from light, has proven to be effective to increase the phase-space density of cold trapped atoms. Dark-states cooling requires open atomic transitions, in contrast to the ordinary laser cooling used for example in magneto-optical traps (MOTs), which operate on closed atomic transitions. For alkali atoms, dark-states cooling is therefore commonly operated on the D 1 transition nS 1/2 → nP 1/2. We show that, for 87Rb, thanks to the large hyperfine structure separations the use of this transition is not strictly necessary and that "quasi-dark state" cooling is efficient also on the D 2 line, 5S 1/2 → 5P 3/2. We report temperatures as low as (4.0 ± 0.3) μK and an increase of almost an order of magnitude in the phase space density with respect to ordinary laser sub-Doppler cooling

Trabajo Fin de Grado leído en la Universidad Rey Juan Carlos en el curso académico 2023/2024. Directores/as: Jorge Antonio Linares YbarraThe 2013 Conclave, which resulted in the election of Pope Francis as the 266th pontifex, got to capture an unusual global attention. Triggered by Pope Benedict XVI¿s unexpected resignation, the Conclave involved intricate rituals and strategic negotiations among Cardinals influenced by cultural and geopolitical factors. The election of Pope Francis, the first Latin American Pope and the first to take the name of Francis, marked a turning point in the Church¿s history, emphasizing social justice and interreligious dialogue. This specific event highlighted the Catholic Church¿s ongoing relevance in contemporary society and its complex intersection of religious, political, and social aspects. The 2013 Conclave still remains a powerful example of the Church¿s rich traditions and its impact on global affairs

Les médecins du conclave. L'élection pontificale entre médecine et politique au début de l'époque moderne

    No full text

Friends of MP Conclave: A Diaspora Marketing Initiative from the "Heart of India"

    No full text
More than 300 participants descended to Indore from across the world and attended the "Friends of MP" conclave which was held from Jan 03-04, 2017. The conclave was set up on the lines of Pravasi Bhartiya Divas, keeping in mind, the Madhya Pradesh (MP)'s vibrant diaspora residing in other countries. This is all about going one-step ahead in "nation branding" by taking region-specific approach into direct consideration through the accumulation of diasporic capital or the conversion of other kinds of capital into diasporic capital

Diffusive author(s), cohesive author: Analysis of S/N (1994)

    No full text
This study indicates the ways in which various aspects of the author(s) are brought forth in Dumb type’s performance art, the S/N production. Previous research has suggested a non-hierarchical organization of Dumb type and the absence of a “privileged author” in Dumb type’s collaborative work, S/N. However, the results that I have investigated from member’s interviews on the creative process of S/N along with my analysis of the recorded images of S/N, indicate a different aspect of the author(s). First, S/N was created through, so to speak, the collective ideas of the members of Dumb type. Further, S/N has at least nine quotations from previous performances, installations, and printed writings, besides the work-in-progress technique. Explicating one of the “author functions” as given by Michel Foucault, each text has plural subjects of the author. However, it has been revealed from members’ interviews that Teiji Furuhashi had a decision-making role in selecting the members’ ideas within the performance. Since then, S/N has had plural subjects of creation; however, Furuhashi is one of the subjects of creation along with the “privileged author.” S/N has plural authors (diffusive authors) yet at the same time, it has a “privileged author,” Teiji Furuhashi (cohesive author)

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
