Simulation of the competition among traditional and on-demand software vendors
In this work, we propose a simulation model to study the
software market, and in particular the competition among On-Premise
and On-Demand vendors of Customer Relationship Management software.
In this market two kinds of vendors, On-Premise and On-Demand
vendors, and corporate customers interact.
Vendors have an initial capital and a specific number of developers. They
invest a fraction of their capital in their product quality and try to sell
their products making a profit. Corporate customers buy software products
for their employees, trying to minimize their cost and maximize
their utility. The proposed model is able to reproduce the real trends of
the market as regards both the price of software and the market shares of
the vendors, despite there is relatively little empirical evidence available
about the various mechanisms at play, and few experimental data.
Our model could be used as a tool to forecast future market trends,
or to plan business policies of investment and pricing. Any firm could
calibrate this model depending on its past business trends in order to
obtain simple guidelines to follow in the planning of business winning
strategies
Software quality and community structure in Java software networks
We present a study of 600 Java software networks with the aim of characterizing the relationship among their defectiveness and community metrics. We analyze the community structure of such networks, defined as their topological division into subnetworks of densely connected nodes. A high density of connections represents a higher level of cooperation between classes, so a well-defined division in communities could indicate that the software system has been designed in a modular fashion and all its functionalities are well separated. We show how the community structure can be an indicator of well-written, high quality code by retrieving the communities of the analyzed systems and by ranking their division in communities through the built-in metric called modularity. We found that the software systems with highest modularity possess the majority of bugs, and tested whether this result is related to some confounding effect. We found two power laws relating the maximum defect density with two different metrics: the number of detected communities inside a software network and the clustering coefficient. We finally found a linear correlation between clustering coefficient and number of communities. Our results can be used to make predictive hypotheses about software defectiveness of future releases of the analyzed systems
Using an artificial financial market for studying a cryptocurrency market
This paper presents an agent-based artificial cryptocurrency market in
which heterogeneous agents buy or sell cryptocurrencies, in particular Bitcoins. In
this market, there are two typologies of agents, Random Traders and Chartists, which
interact with each other by trading Bitcoins. Each agent is initially endowed with a
finite amount of crypto and/or fiat cash and issues buy and sell orders, according to
her strategy and resources. The number of Bitcoins increases over time with a rate
proportional to the real one, even if the mining process is not explicitly modelled. The
model proposed is able to reproduce some of the real statistical properties of the price
returns observed in the Bitcoin real market. In particular, it is able to reproduce the unit
root property, the fat tail phenomenon and the volatility clustering. The simulator has
been implemented using object-oriented technology, and could be considered a valid
starting point to study and analyse the cryptocurrency market and its future evolutions
Web framework points: an effort estimation methodology for Web application development using a content management framework
Web applications are among the most popular and relevant kinds of application. Most Web applications are developed using a content management framework (CMF). CMF helps to accelerate the publication of large amounts of information and the development of Web applications. However, developing Web applications through CMF is not exempt from cost and time overruns, as in traditional software projects. Currently, there is no estimation model able to adequately measure the effort of developing a Web application.
This work presents a new methodology, called web framework points, to estimate the effort of Web applications developed with CMF. Web framework points is a hybrid methodology, composed of a sizing phase, which follows specific guidelines, and an effort estimation phase, obtained by applying a cost model to the size model of the project to estimate. The sizing of the project takes into account not only usual functional requirements, as in function points analysis, but also elements specific for developing a Web application through CMF. We also present the experimental validation of the proposed methodology, performed on a dataset of 29 real-world projects, of which 83% show an estimation error of less than 25%
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
