Abundance and spatial distribution of coastal floating plastic marine debris in the Balearic Islands
[eng] Coastal ecosystems are continuously affected by anthropogenic threats such as
urbanization, maritime activities, recreational and commercial activities, all of which have
been prominent sources of plastic marine litter. During summer of July 2017, the spatial
distribution of floating plastics at seven locations across the island using nearshore sea
cleaning boats was assessed. One-hundred percent of the samples contained plastic
items of varying sizes, ranging from macro- (> 25 mm), meso- (5-25 mm) and microplastics (< 5 mm), composed principally of fragments, films and filaments. Significant
differences were found for the abundance and size differences of items between the
sampling locations. All samples were collected within one kilometre of the coastline and
both the abundance and weight was found to significantly increase closer to the
coastline. Plastics smaller than 5 mm were the dominant size class and fragments
composed of almost 60% of the items with the main colors being transparent and white.
Low variability of polymers were found with polyethylene being the primary plastic
polymer type. These preliminary results indicate there is high small scale variability of
coastal marine plastic concentrations surrounding the Balearic Island
Quantification, ingestion and threat of plastic pollution on marine diversity
[eng] Plastic debris in the marine environment is an increasing global threat to marine ecosystems. The Mediterranean
Sea basin has been widely recognized as one of the most polluted seas with marine litter. The present work
encompassed within this doctoral thesis focuses on a multi-disciplinary approach to identifying, quantifying and
evaluating the potential risk of marine debris, specifically plastic, on marine ecosystems. The first step was to
identify the spatial distribution of sea-surface debris. The next step was to detect its direct implications with
marine species. Finally, building on these previous results, the potential risk on marine diversity was quantified
at both a regional and local scale.
Floating marine debris collected by sea-cleaning boats was analysed to determine the spatio-temporal patterns of
plastic debris (items >5 mm) on the sea surface in the Balearic Islands' coastal waters (Chapter 2). Plastic marine
debris was the most common item (54%) with abundance increasing with summer months. Additionally, low
wave height and wind conditions favoured the effectiveness of marine debris removal.
The spatio-temporal micro-plastic fraction was assessed in the coastal regions to determine the characterization,
abundance, and polymer type; in an effort to identify and model their potential sources (Chapter 3). Therefore,
micro-plastics (items < 5 mm) dominated the size class and hotspot areas with high coastal fragmentation was
found in the southern area of the island of Mallorca. Furthermore, backtracking current models indicated the
majority of debris circulating in the nearshore areas originated from the Balearic Islands.
The ingestion of anthropogenic particles in commercial fish species (the European anchovy and the European
sardine) was assessed along the Spanish Mediterranean continental shelf (Chapter 4). Overall, a 14-15% ingestion
occurrence was found with items of both synthetic and natural materials, primarily fibres from the textile industry.
Net tows were collected in the maximum zooplankton aggregation layer and the stomach content analyses of
selective and filter feeding fish from fishing hauls in the same region were analysed (Chapter 5). Anthropogenic
particles were found in all net tows and 96% of the items were fibres. Filter feeding fish mainly ingested fibres
while the selective and more predatory species ingested primarily fragments.
Seeing the high concentrations of plastic debris and its interactions with marine biota, the following study
quantified this threat across marine diversity the entire Mediterranean Sea through a modelling approach. By
integrating species-level life-history traits into the model, distribution maps were developed for each species
(Chapter 6). Overall, results highlighted marine diversity in coastal areas and demersal species were at high risk
of exposure to plastic marine debris.
Considering coastal species were at the highest risk in the previous study, marine diversity within a nearshore
coastal area was quantified through exposure, vulnerability, and hazard using empirical data of plastic marine
debris combined with each species' ecological traits (Chapter 7). The results identified the heterogeneous threat
of ingestion throughout the Balearic Islands and species with higher trophic levels are more at risk.
The outcomes from this thesis highlights the current threat of plastic pollution on ecosystems locally and
regionally within the Mediterranean Sea to identify the current implications plastic pollution has on marine
diversity, especially in coastal regions, which can serve as essential areas for management and conservation of
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
