Analysis of ceiling effects occurring with speech recognition tests in adult cochlear-implanted patients
This article presents a simple method of analysing speech test scores which are biased through ceiling effects. Eighty postlingually deafened adults implanted with a MED-EL COMBI 40/40+ cochlear implant (CI) were administered a numbers test and a sentence test at initial device activation and at 1, 3, 6, 12 and 24 months thereafter. As a measure for speech recognition performance, the number of patients who scored at the `ceiling level' (i.e. at least 95% correct answers) was counted at each test interval. Results showed a quick increase in this number soon after device activation as well as a continuous improvement over time ( numbers test: 1 month: 51%; 6 months: 73%; 24 months: 88%; sentence test: 1 month: 33%; 6 months: 49%; 24 months: 64%). The new method allows for the detection of speech recognition progress in CI patient samples even at late test intervals, where improvement curves based on averaged scores are usually assuming a flat shape. Co-composted biochar (Combi) production and its effects on ocimum basilicum plants growth
In agriculture, in recent years, more and more attention has been given to the COMBI. COMBI is a soil improver obtained from a composting process of organic material with biochar, added at the beginning of the process itself. Biochar has been used for several years and many studies have shown the benefits it brings when applied to soils, while COMBI is still little studied. This article aims to demonstrate both the effects of COMBI on the growth of Ocimum basilicum specie plants and to quantify the best quantity to be applied within the substrate. The experimental trials were performed in a greenhouse with controlled temperature and humidity, according to the following growth tests theses: Control: Soil for gardens composed mainly of peat (CTRL); thesis 1: Soil mixed with COMBI at 10% v/v (COMBI10); thesis 2: Soil mixed with COMBI at 20% v/v (COMBI20); thesis 3: Soil mixed with COMBI at 40% v/v (COMBI40); thesis 4: Soil mixed with COMBI at 80% v/v (COMBI80); thesis 5: 100% COMBI (COMBI100). The results showed good growth of basil plants in the COMBI10 and COMBI20 cases, compared to the control. COMBI80 and COMBI100 theses, on the other hand, did not lead to positive results; in particular COMBI100 did not allow either seeds germination in most cases. To compare the quality of the basil plants, the total amount of essential oil for CTRL, COMBI10, COMBI20 and COMBI 40 theses was extracted and quantified
The impact of kombi-taxis on public transport
Includes bibliography. This thesis attempts to quantify the impact of kombi-taxis on the conventional modes of public transport, in particular the bus, in the Cape Town Metropolitan Area. The impact is quantified in terms of the resultant modal shift of commuters from the buses, trains, cars and walking, in favour of the kombi-taxi. The approach adopted involved a study of the kombi-taxi and bus operations and characteristics on the different kombi-taxi routes in the study area. Five representative routes were selected for a detailed study, involving an Observation survey and an Interview survey directed at the bus and kombi-taxi users on these routes. On a further 66 routes, a bus-taxi modal split survey was conducted. The findings of the study show• that the majority of present kombi-taxi users are former bus users. Conservatively, an estimated 30.6% of all the daily bus passenger trips have been lost to the kombi-taxi. The effect on trains has not been insignificant with an estimated 4.4% of all commuter train trips having been converted to kombi-taxi trips
Representing and Reasoning about Temporal Granularities
In this paper, we propose a new logical approach to represent and to reason about different time granularities. We identify a time granularity as an infinite sequence of time points properly labelled with proposition symbols marking the starting and ending points of the corresponding granules, and we symbolically model sets of granularities by means of linear time logic formulas. Some real-world granularities are provided, from a clinical domain and from the Gregorian Calendar, to motivate and exemplify our approach. Different formulas are introduced, which represent relations between different granularities. The proposed framework permits one to algorithmically solve the consistency, the equivalence, and the classification problems in a uniform way, by reducing them to the validity problem for the considered linear time logic
