Kate M. Cleary a literary biography with selected works
In 1884 Kate Cleary moved from Chicago to Hubbell, Nebraska, where she bore six children and helped support her family by publishing hundreds of stories, poems, and articles. After her return to Chicago in 1898, Cleary continued to write stories about the American West. Susanne K. George's absorbing account recovers the life and works of a fascinating western American author. She vividly portrays Cleary's arduous decade and a half on the frontier and her last, tragic years in Chicago, where she died in 1905, at the age of forty-two. George also describes how Cleary's career reflects the difficulties faced by women authors at the end of the nineteenth century and the unique perspectives that such women brought to the art of fictionThe second part of the book is a collection of Cleary's writings. Some of these eighteen short stories, essays, and sketches are somber, even grim, depictions of homestead and small-town life in Nebraska, with special emphasis placed on the experience's of women. Others are humorous, ironic accounts of life on the western frontier. Also included is a sampling of Cleary's vers
Value proposition analysis for solid state lighting: A case study of Ahmedali Ahmed Electrical Contracting; Marketing the product in the Kingdom of Bahrain
The proposition given to a product or service in terms of its worth given by a customer is researched and analysed to find the underlying factors contributing to the value. The study is undertaken to investigate the different factors that lays ground for increased ‘Customer value’ and ‘Product Value’. The research objective is to find the “Value Proposition Analysis for Solid State Lighting: a Case Study AhmedAli Ahmed Electrical Contracting; Marketing the product in the Kingdom of Bahrain” Most businesses generate profits, when the customers give a certain value(s) to the service/product provided by the business entity. This could involve many attributes to consider. The project overlooks in to this value significantly to understand the attributes that collectively contributes to ‘Valued Relation’ between the customer and the business. This is achieved by making effective use of literature suggested by various authors and by employing research strategies to validate the literature through the findings. The research also looks in to the case study organisation to fully understand the capabilities of the company to market the product. Thus, this analysis will be specifically looking in to the value proposition given to Solid State Lighting by the current UK customers and by clients of AhamedAli Ahmed Electrical Contracting, Kingdom of Bahrain. However, this analysis must viewed critically, as the product comes at a premium price and the study will be much centred in the Kingdom of Bahrain and cannot be generalised for the other GCC countries or the Middle East. This study is focused to generate strategies in marketing Solid State Lighting in Bahrain taking A.A.E as the Case Study Organisation understanding the Value Proposition for Solid State Lighting

On the relations between the bandgap, structure and composition of the M–Si–N (M = alkali, alkaline earth or rare-earth metal) nitridosilicates
Relations between the bandgap and structural properties and composition of the M–Si–N nitridosilicates (M = alkali, alkaline earth or rare earth metal) have been obtained, using experimental data collected from literature; and qualitative models are presented to explain the observed trends. Compounds with a higher degree of condensation, i.e. a higher Si/N ratio, generally have longer M–N bonds and shorter Si–N bonds. The observations can be explained based on the effective charge of N, dependent on its coordination with Si (NSix). With increasing Si/N ratio the coordination number of N by Si increases, making the effective charge of the nitrogen atom less negative, resulting in a longer and less covalent M–N bond. This also shifts the N 2p levels down in energy, lowering the top of the valence band (mainly composed of N orbitals); while decreasing the Si–N distance shifts the bottom of the conduction band (mainly composed of Si and M orbitals) upward. Some nitridosilicates show deviations to the general trends, such as γ-Si3N4 and several Li-containing compounds. These deviations have been discussed and possible explanations have been given based on peculiarities in their structural characteristics.ChemE/Product and Process EngineeringRST/Fundamental Aspects of Materials and Energ
The upland hardwood component of Prince Edward Island's remnant Acadian forest: determination of depth of edge and patterns of exotic plant invasion
The upland hardwood component of Prince Edward Island's Acadian forest is among the best remaining examples of the precolonial landscape, but it has been severely fragmented during the past 300 years of human use and settlement. Despite the ecological importance of this remnant habitat and its level of fragmentation, there has been no assessment of depth of edge or exotic plant invasion in these areas. Three 300 m long edge-interior transects were established in each of six study sites. Nine 100-m^sup 2^ circular plots were sampled along each transect at distances from 5.7 to 300 m; one external plot was established at each transect to sample species in adjacent habitats. In each plot, all vascular plants were identified, a visual estimate of percent cover was made, and soil temperature, canopy cover, and tree diameters were measured. An edge-interior plant community gradient was found within these forests; a plant community characteristic of interior conditions was not reached until a distance of more than 120 m from an edge. This suggests that upland hardwood protected areas smaller than 240 m on a side (5.75 ha) are unlikely to include interior habitat, and sites should be greater than 320 m on all sides (10.24 ha) to ensure at least some interior habitat for vascular plants. Invasion by exotic species was found to be more extensive than that reported from other jurisdictions, and innermost (300 m) plots were not free from exotics. Fifteen exotic species were found within the study sites, with Veronica officinalis (common speedwell) and Hieracium lachenalii (hawkweed) being the most invasive, both in terms of distance penetrated and area covered. [PUBLICATION ABSTRACT] Key words: Acadian forest, fragmentation, depth of edge, protected area, Veronica, Hieracium.Source type: Electronic(1
Estimating the relative energetic cost of foraging in Pacific Coast Feeding Group grey whales from biologging data
Biologging tags that record high-resolution tri-axial accelerometry data are proving to be integral
to the study of foraging ecology of large, free-roaming marine mammals, such as whales. They
have been applied to a number of baleen whale species that feed pelagically through lunges or
ram filtration to quantitatively define behaviours and estimate energetic costs. However, few
behavioural ecology studies using accelerometry data have been conducted on grey whales, a
unique baleen whale that performs benthic suction feeding. Using suction cup tri-axial
accelerometer tag deployments on 10 Pacific Coast Feeding Group (PCFG) grey whales along
the Oregon and Washington coasts, I defined signals of foraging behaviour at both the broad
state (dive) and foraging tactic (roll event) scales. I then estimated the relative energetic cost of
these behaviours using energy expenditure proxies derived from the accelerometry data—Overall
Dynamic Body Acceleration (ODBA; ms⁻²), stroke rate (Hz), stroke amplitude (radians per s),
and duration of dives with different foraging tactics performed (min). Hidden Markov Models
(HMMs) defined three biologically distinct states—forage, search, and transit—using turn angle,
dive duration, dive tortuosity and presence of roll events. Classification and Regression Tree
(CART) models best defined the foraging tactics of headstands, benthic digs, and side swims
using median pitch, depth to body length ratio, and absolute value of the median roll. These
definitions of grey whale foraging signals using accelerometry data add to the quantitative
descriptions of foraging behaviours previously described for baleen whales. Stroke rate identified
foraging and headstanding as being the most energetically costly activities at the broad state and
foraging tactic scales. These findings contribute to the foundational understanding of grey whale
foraging energetics needed to assess the impacts of various conservation concerns on the fitness
and interpret patterns of behaviour choice of this unique group of grey whales.Science, Faculty ofOceans and Fisheries, Institute for theGraduat
Mother-women and doll-babies: the social construction of female characters in Kate Chopin's the awakening and Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon, 2003
Through feminist and cultural criticism, this study examines the novels of two renowned American authors, Kate Chopin and Toni Morrison, who have made immense contributions to the field of women's studies through their keen observation of the roles played by women in conventional American societies. This study was based on the concepts of Victorianism and patriarchy and the effects they have on middle-class women. The tenets of Victorianism perpetuated by late-nineteenth-century Louisiana Creole society, which the protagonist, Edna Pontellier, inhabits in Kate Chopin's The Awakening, do not encourage Edna's pursuit of independence. And the institution of patriarchy perpetuated by the early-twentieth-century African-American middle-class society, which the protagonist, Ruth Foster Dead, occupies in Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon, inhibits the female characters in the novel from becoming individuals. The conclusions drawn from the findings suggest that in spite of their differences in race, eras, and societies as middle-class women both Edna Pontellier and Ruth Foster Dead undergo significant hardships due to the social strictures of their patriarchal societies
New Deep-Blue-Emitting Ce-Doped A4- mBnC19+2 mX29+ m (A = Sr, La; B = Li; C = Si, Al; X = O, N; 0 ≤ m ≤ 1; 0 ≤ n ≤ 1) Phosphors for High-Color-Rendering Warm White Light-Emitting Diodes
A new sialon Eu3.60LiSi13.78Al6.03O6.82N22.59 has been discovered via the single-particle diagnosis approach. Its crystal structure (space group P3m1) was solved and refined from single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. It has the interesting feature of two types of disorder at the Eu2 site: positional disorder (Eu2a/Eu2b) and substitutional disorder with (Si/Al)2(O/N). The structure is generalized to the formula A4-mBnC19+2mX29+m (A = Sr, La, Eu, Ce; B = Li; C = Si, Al; X = O, N; 0 ≤ m ≤ 1; 0 ≤ n ≤ 1), of which Sr3.61LiSi14.27Al5.61O6.19N23.25 (Sr-sialon, m = 0.41, n = 1) and La2.85Sr0.76LiSi14.86Al4.93O2.89N26.51 (LaSr-sialon, m = 0.40, n = 1) are two examples that have been obtained as a single-phase powder. Sr-sialon:Eu and LaSr-sialon:Eu both show blue to yellow emission, depending on the Eu concentration, whereas Sr-sialon:1% Ce shows a deep-blue emission band centered at 422 nm with a full width at half-maximum of 80 nm and an internal quantum efficiency of 80% (λex = 355 nm). The latter phosphor has very good thermal stability of both emission intensity and color. A white light-emitting diode (LED) containing the newly discovered Sr-sialon:5% Ce as the blue phosphor component shows excellent color-rendering indices (Ra = 96 and R12 = 97) with a correlated color temperature of 4255 K. This indicates that Sr-sialon:Ce is a highly promising deep-blue phosphor for illumination grade white LEDs.Accepted Author ManuscriptChemE/Product and Process Engineerin
