Cranial movement disorders: clinical features, pathophysiology, differential diagnosis and treatment
Cranial movement disorders are a common neurological problem. These disorders can be limited to the cranial muscles alone or manifest as part of a more generalized movement disorder. Cranial movement disorders can originate from the highest (motor cortex) to the lowest (cranial nerve and muscle) levels of the motor system. Owing to the lack of diagnostic tests and biomarkers for these disorders, their differential diagnosis can be difficult even for the experienced neurologist. Advances have, however, been made in the identification and treatment of these conditions, and most can be managed effectively with appropriate knowledge of the diagnostic signs and effective treatments. Extrachromosomal genes: a powerful tool in gene targeting approaches
Several studies, some of which have been updated during the recent workshop entitled Genome Medicine: Gene Therapy for the Millennium (Rome, 30 September-3 October 2001), have highlighted the usefulness of extrachromosomal or episomal genes in gene targeting strategies. Due to the selectable nature of antibiotic resistance and reporter genes, targeted correction of mutated versions of these extrachromosomal genes allows an accurate quantification of correction frequency. In addition, these model systems facilitate and speed up the optimization of critical parameters for the successful application of gene targeting approaches. In fact, type of cell line, gene delivery system, molar ratio of episomal target/therapeutic constructs, nature and design of therapeutic complexes and different recombinative proteins may be critical for the actual feasibility of each method. Although virus-based approaches are now being investigated as well, this article is focusing on the targeted correction of extrachromosomal genes by the use of small DNA fragments (SDF), chimeric RNA/DNA oligonucleotides (RDO) and triplex-forming oligonucleotides (TFO)
Simfit: A microcomputer software-toolkit for modelistic studies in biochemistry
A software package suitable for personal computers and designed to handle simulation and fitting problems related to the study of biomolecules under pre-steady and steady state conditions is presented, and its overall architecture as well as the implemented algorithms illustrated. The peculiar features of the package are: (i) integrated capability of simulating dynamic models and fitting to them experimental data; (ii) handling of stiff problems; (iii) free use of algebraic as well as differential equations; (iv) objective comparison of models of different complexity. The above features are discussed through a number of examples taken from the direct experience of the authors in enzyme kinetics and ligand binding

Applicability of the polysulphone horizontal calibration to differently inclined dosimeters
Polysulphone (PS) dosimetry has been a widely used technique for more than 30 years to quantify the erythemally effective UV dose received by anatomic sites (personal exposure). The calibration of PS dosimeters is an important issue as their spectral response is different from the erythemal action spectrum. It is performed exposing a set of PS dosimeters on a horizontal plane and measuring the UV doses received by dosimeters using calibrated spectroradiometers or radiometers. In this study, data collected during PS field campaigns (from 2004 to 2006), using horizontal and differently inclined dosimeters, were analyzed to provide some considerations on the transfer of the horizontal calibration to differently inclined dosimeters, as anatomic sites usually are. The role of sky conditions, of the angle of incidence between the sun and the normal to the slope, and of the type of surrounding surface on the calibration were investigated. It was concluded that PS horizontal calibrations apply to differently inclined dosimeters for incidence angles up to approximately 70 degrees and for surfaces excluding ones with high albedo. Caution should be used in the application of horizontal calibrations for cases of high-incidence angle and/or high albedo surfaces
