Inhabited Images: Drawing a New Life for Housing Complexes
[EN] The theme of inhabiting in high-density buildings has been widely investigated since the Mid-Twentieth century. Still, original researches are now opening new perspectives, creating a common ground in which urban planning and architecture increasingly intersect with studies based on participation, urban policies and spatial justice. The failure of some of the iconic Twentieth-century architectures rose a strong debate that often resulted in their demolition. This process was primarily dictated by market logic, by a change in the residents and, above all, by the lack of all the services needed to build a community. Some experimental alternatives to replacing neglect building complexes have emerged especially in France and Northern Europe. The paper presents a selection of residential projects by Lacaton & Vassal, Mikhail Riches and LAN (Local Architecture Network), which use architectural drawings to propose innovative solutions to local administrations, as well as to initiate planning processes involving resident communities.Cristina F. Moderating Urbanization and Managing Growth: How Can Colombo Prevent the Emerging Chaos?
This paper examines urbanization trends, the growth of Colombo and its present state of development. It looks at the approaches to the planned interventions in the city and demonstrates how a uni-directional urban development has had a detrimental impactColombo, urban development, managing urbanization, planning, housing,
Utopia srl. Icone sconfitte dell'housign sociale
In contemporary nomadism the inhabited space, whether it is the dwelling,
a shopping center or an exhibition structure, is no longer a place anchored
to the ground, stable. Its style involves essentialism, transportability and
adaptability, it is in continuous motion. We are talking about a new form
of communication in which content and container are born with one and the
same intent: to mark the spaces where they are located, even for a short time,
in a critical and significant manner. “Once it was referred to as “nomadic
architecture”, inspired by the Mongolian yurts, Gypsy caravans and Native
American teepees. Today their appearance is completely different but there
is still the desire to develop small transportable environments that respond
to all the needs in a way that respects the environment and makes intelligent
use of resources” (Richardson 2001). There is no pre-established place; the
architectural object relates to the city and its inhabitants with its peculiarities,
always in a different way, creating mess, putting on a show and at the
same time triggering an economic, social and cultural mechanism. This
particular trend of contemporary architecture contributes to sustainable urban
development and becomes, if filtered by an awareness of the specificity and
diversity of the interventions ‘the medium to trigger ongoing progress that is
not ephemeral.’ A reflection about the existing space, about the relationship
between the setting and the new object, can meld architecture, art, design and
social intervention, thereby removing all disciplinary barriers between the

This thesis deals with the social representations of the subjects involved in the use and the management of the water on Karst Aquifer in the City of Colombo (PR), since the beginning of its use, in 1995, until the current days. The exploration of this aquifer, that in its beginning it was about an institutional solution for the problem of the water lack in the urban area of Colombo, became the partner-ambient scene of conflicts and impacts. It was used in this thesis the model of analysis of the social representations and the patrimonial management of the natural resources. One analyzed the common factors of the conflict and of the use of the water on three categories of involved citizens in the use and management of Karst Aquifer water: Farmers, Technicians of Sanepar Company and Public Agencies. The research indicated that the conflict expressed, on the one side, by the farmers claiming that the irrational exploitation of Karst Aquifer interfered directly on the availability of water from them for irrigation agriculture. The other side, by Sanepar claiming the impossibility of stops the capture of this Aquifer in line to be the only viable solution to meet the demand for water in Colombo City. The results of analysis of social representations of the subjects involved, as much on the conflict as in relation to the meanings of the use of the water, pointed a linkage between the representations of the subjects with the social role that they develop. In the category of farmers, the results showed that the water represents both maintenance of the physical survival as of the familiar economic income of the citizens, being the motivating factor of the conflict. In the category of Technicians of Sanepar Company, the results linked with one of the missions of the company, the supply public. And in the Public Agencies, the results related with the social mission that they represent, as the management, supervision, licensing and environmental mediation of social conflicts and environmental
Andrej Belyj v Sicilii: imaginativnaja geografija i orientalizirujuscij vzgljad - kogo i na cto?
Andrei Belyi did not see Sicily (many factual mistakes can be pointed at): it was shielded by constantly open books. The author appears, in his travelogue, as a typical Orientalist. Characteristically enough, besides, he sought the Orient in a place a thousand kilometers west of Moscow.
It would be pointless to criticize him from the point of view of a “native in an English hat”; what is interesting is that his Orientalist gaze at Sicily is astonishingly similar to the Orientalist gaze at Russia itself typical of Russian intellectuals.
Alexander Etkind wrote about the “Internal Colonization” of Russia; in Italy a debate has begun about the “Internal Orientalism” of Northern Italians concerning the Southern part of the country – and as well that of Southern-born intellectuals writing about the South for the Northern public; for instance, the case of Giovanni Verga, finding the Orient in his native land, is enlightening.
In his mature work Verga overcomes the Orientalist gaze by moving the focus inside the Sicilian lower classes; we can trace a similar process in Belyi's writings on Russia, but not on Sicily

Orbit design for future SpaceChip swarm missions in a planetary atmosphere
The effect of solar radiation pressure and atmospheric drag on the orbital dynamics of satellites-on-a-chip (SpaceChips) is exploited to design equatorial long-lived orbits about the oblate Earth. The orbit energy gain due to asymmetric solar radiation pressure, considering the Earth's shadow, is used to balance the energy loss due to atmospheric drag. Future missions for a swarm of SpaceChips are proposed, where a number of small devices are released from a conventional spacecraft to perform spatially distributed measurements of the conditions in the ionosphere and exosphere. It is shown that the orbit lifetime can be extended and indeed selected through solar radiation pressure and the end-of-life re-entry of the swarm can be ensured, by exploiting atmospheric drag
