Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Wideband pattern actuated high power efficient antenna designed for high power applications
It is true that during the last past years, High Power Microwave (HPM) weapons threat has grown up. One way to prevent from this kind of system is to study every part of it. Among them, the antenna is the element that influences the most the electromagnetic waves behavior then it has to be evaluated. This is the reason why the Centre de Gramat du Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique et aux Energies Alternatives has teamed up with the Direction Générale de l’Armement in order to propose this thesis in collaboration with the Institut d’Electronique et de Télécommunications de Rennes. The subject provides the full study of three antennas that can be integrated on an HPM weapon. Each type of antenna is developed to address a problem: The first antenna operates at a fixed frequency and is designed to provide a maximized gain; The second one is manufactured to have a variable radiation pattern in one plane and a stable radiation pattern in the other plane; Finally, a broadband antenna operating between 2 and 4 GHz is developed in order to maintain a stable radiation pattern. Each study is led by taking into consideration high input power (around 1 kW pulsed power) and also dimensional constraints in order to be integrated on a mobile device for instance. Each antenna is designed using electromagnetic software then validated by measurements
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Antenna design improving the surface waves propagation in the HF band
The surface-waves propagate beyond the horizon. This phenomenon is an attractive feature for many applications operating in the HF band both in civil or military field. By example, we can quote the High Frequency Surface Waves Radar (HFSWR), communicating systems, or the study of the currentology. Currently, the antennas used in the field of surface-waves propagation are not fully optimized and radiate also in sky wave. In order to optimize the radiation pattern of the antennas used in these systems, the company TDF, the Direction Générale de l’Armement (DGA) and the Institute of Electronic and Telecommunications of Rennes (IETR) have proposed this projetct. The main objective of this work is to design electrically small antennas in the vertical plane (< 3 meters) in the HF band while reducing the radiation toward the sky. The first concept is based on vertically polarized antennas electrically small in the vertical plane coupled to horizontally radiators placed above the antenna. As a result, the radiation pattern in the horizontal plane is omnidirectional or directive with a radiation toward the sky reduced for the elevations range from -45° to +45°. Prototypes have been realized and validated by measurements. Then, in the second study we have developed antennas array in order to reduce the radiation toward the sky with another way that the horizontal radiators. This method allows reducing significantly the radiation toward the sky according to the number of elements in the array. Finally, in the third study we have studied electronically scanning antennas while maintaining the reduction of the radiation toward the sky. The first system is based on an array of radiator loaded by reactance, and the second is based on a planar array with an appropriate feeding
Design and manufacturing of antennas for integrated mast : application to a communication antenna in V/UHF band and an electrical beam scanning antenna in X-band
The need to communicate and detect potential enemies increases with the extension of maritime conflicts. This need impacts directly the number of antennas on naval platforms. However, this increase of aerials leads to several damaging effects: like coupling or high radar signature. To limit this effect, some companies have developed integrated mast design. This structure limits the coupling effect between aerials by a subdivision of the mast and provides an omnidirectional coverage for all antennas inserted inside the mast. The objective of the thesis is to design two antenna systems for the compact integrated mast (CmastTM) developed by the Constructions Mécanique de Normandie (CMN): a communication antenna in the V/UHF band and an electronically scanning antenna for a maritime navigation radar in X-band. For the communication in the V/UHF band, a broadband conical antenna has been developed (225-400MHz). This antenna provides an optimized radiation pattern to insure the communications between the ship and the aircrafts. An experimental validation has been done with a prototype. In the second study, we have developed an electronically scanning antenna for a navigation radar. This antenna is based on a transmit-array technology including an illuminating feed and an antenna which generates the appropriate radiation pattern. A large part of the study has been done on the feed, which illuminates an array with specific dimensions (1530mmx100mm). Three different near-field focusing feeds have been developed and some of them have been validated experimentally. Then, two architectures of transmit-array antennas have been studied, using two different technologies: printed technology and a mixed technology with waveguide and horn
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Localization, characterization and modeling of passive intermodulation sources : application to antennas for radio-mobile networks
The evolution of telecommunications has made passive intermodulation products (PIM) not only a criterion of quality and network performance but also a major problem for service providers such as mobile operators. The work presented in this manuscript is a contribution to the resolution of some of PIM problems in base station antennas and is organized around three main axes : - the characterization of passive intermodulation root causes within base station antennas. Numerous experimental studies have been carried out with the aim of determining the influence of different parameters on the PIM generated by metal-to-metal contacts (roughness of surfaces, use of surface treatment, geometry and nature of metals) or by printed circuits as microstrip type (matching, line width and thickness of dielectric substrate). The results of these studies contributed to improve theoretical knowledge and to define rules to reduce induced PIM levels ; - the localization of passive intermodulation root causes within complex radio frequency systems. For this, a specific PIM measurements bench has been designed. It allows locating PIM root causes, with a level close to the current 3GPP specification, with an accuracy less than 2cm. In addition, to ease the PIM defects detection in a base station antenna, various complementary methods have been developed and associated with the measurements bench ; - the electromagnetic modeling issued from the experimental studies, carried out of non-linear components usable into a circuit-type simulator. The use of these allows designers to estimate, early during the design stage, the PIM behavior of metal-to-metal contacts, microstrip and suspended stripline printed circuits
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
