Resurrecting a long-vanished diaspora: The Portrayal of the Jewish Shtetl in Dvora Baron’s Sunbeams
No full textRegarded as the first modern Hebrew female author, this essay contends that what set Dvora Baron apart from the male-dominated prose of the period, was her probing of the east-European Shtetl, rather than the Zionist project. Through the examination of Baron’s short story “Shavririm”, this essay probes Baron’s vivid depiction of the Shtetl, as well as offering a scathing critique of the community’s treatment of the heroine— an orphaned girl who overcomes emotional and physical hardships to emerge as a noble, triumphant figure. In her corpus, Baron betrayed a subversive strand of writing that focused on the Jewish women’s experience and gendered traumas in a patriarchal society

No full textU ovom će se radu predstaviti grafijska (slovopisna) i pravopisna analiza prvog dijela tiskane knjižice Put krixa Isukarstova od dvora Pilatova do varka Kalvarie: sʼ mnoghim drughima molitvam. Riječ je o knjižici tiskanoj u Splitu 1839. godine, koja se čuva u Gradskoj knjižnici Marka Marulića u Splitu. U prvom će se s dijelu rada opisati grafemi kojima autor knjižice bilježi pojedine foneme, uz navođenje primjera iz teksta. U nastavku će se iznijeti i pravopisna pravila kojima se autor služi (interpunkcijski znakovi, sastavljeno i nesastavljeno pisanje riječi, uporaba kratica, pisanje velikoga i maloga početnog slova). Cilj je rada utvrditi kojom se grafijom i pravopisnim pravilima koristi splitski autor sredinom 19. stoljeća. Navedena knjižica pritom predstavlja dragocjen izvor za daljnja filološka i lingvistička istraživanja.This article will present a graphic and orthographic analysis of the first part of the printed booklet Put krixa Isukarstova od dvora Pilatova do vark Calvaria: sʼ mnoghim druhim molitvam. It is a booklet printed in Split in 1839, which is kept in the Marko Marulić City Library in Split. In the first part of the work, the graphemes with which the author of the booklet records individual phonemes will be described, along with examples from the text. In the following, the spelling rules used by the author will be presented (punctuation marks, compound and uncompounded writing of words, use of abbreviations, writing of capital and small initial letters). The aim of the paper is to determine which script and spelling rules the author from Split used in the middle of the 19th century. The aforementioned booklet is a valuable source for further philological and linguistic research.In questo lavoro si presenteranno l’analisi grafica e ortografica della prima parte del libretto a stampa Via crucis di Gesù Cristo dalla corte di Pilato alla vetta del Calvario: con molte altre preghiere. Si tratta di un libretto stampato a Spalato nell’anno 1839, conservato nella Biblioteca civica Marko Marulić a Spalato. Nella prima parte del lavoro si descriveranno i grafemi con cui l’autore del libretto scrive certi fonemi, citando gli esempi dal testo. Di seguito si esporranno anche le norme ortografiche di cui si serve l’autore (segni d’interpunzione, parole attaccate o staccate, uso delle abbreviazioni, lettere iniziali maiuscole o minuscole). Scopo del lavoro è accertare quali regole di grafia e ortografia sono state adottate dall’autore spalatino della metà del XIX secolo. Il libretto in questione rappresenta una preziosa fonte per ulteriori ricerche filologiche e linguistiche

No full textWith this treatise the author concludes his contributions to the history of ten Carinthian parishes in the Pliberk and Beljak church districts, which were incorporated into the Ljubljana Diocese in the years 1461— 1787. He arrives at conclusion that the decision of Emperor Frederic III and Pope Pius II Enea Silvio Piccolomini who in the foundation documents of the Ljubljana Diocese assigned those parishes to the Ljubljana Diocese, had far-reaching consequences : the inhabitants of those parts of Carinthia have remained faithful to their Slovene nationality.S to razpravo pisec končuje prispevke k zgodovini desetih koroških župnij pliberškega in beljaškega cerkvenega okrožja, ki so bile od leta 1461 do 1787 inkorporirane ljubljanski škofiji, in pride do zaključka, da je odločitev cesarja Friderika III. in papeža Pija II. No full textČlánek věnuje pozornost vcelku nenápadnému rozsudku Mezinárodního soudního dvora (MSD) o přiznání náhrady škody Kostarice v jejím sporu s Nikaraguou [Certain Activities carried out by Nicaragua in the Border Area (Costa Rica v. Nicaragua)]. Tímto rozhodnutím se dostal ke konci letitý spor, ve kterém se MSD zabýval pobytem nikaragujských vojsk na území Kostariky a související výstavbou kanálů spolu s hloubením řeky San Juan. Z předchozí judikatury MSD je možné dovodit, že v případě porušení závazných norem mezinárodního práva vzniká nárok na kompenzaci, která však může mít několik podob – od konstatování, že k neoprávněnému jednání došlo (pokud nejsou důsledky závažné, nebo se jedná toliko o porušení procesních pravidel), po uvedení do původního stavu, je-li to možné a s ohledem na okolnosti přiměřené, až po nárok na náhradu škody v penězích. Tu však MSD dosud nikdy za škodu na životním prostředí nepřiznal a ani o ní nerozhodoval, takže bylo možné jen odhadovat, k jakým kritériím za tímto účelem přihlédne. Zároveň se otevřel prostor pro úvahy jednotlivých soudců nad relevancí ochranných režimů, které se ve vztahu k životnímu prostředí v mezinárodním právu uplatňují, nebo pro reflexi moderních přístupů k hodnocení funkcí životního prostředí.Th is article provides analysis of the judgment on compensation of the International Court of Justice in the dispute between Costa Rica and Nicaragua [Certain Activities carried out by Nicaragua in the Border Area (Costa Rica v. Nicaragua)]. It was the fi rst case ever in which the Court was called upon to pronounce on reparations for environmental damages. In determining the compensation due for environmental damage, the Court assessed the value to be assigned to the restoration of the damaged environment as well as to the impairment or loss of environmental goods and services prior to recovery. Th e author expresses disagreement on both the reasoning of the Court and the quantum of damages awarded, mainly due to lack of considerations of equity, non-pecuniary reparations and specifi c international value of the nature concerned. Furthermore, a brief commentary is provided on recent case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union on Polish air quality plans (C-336/16) and defi ciencies in waste water management in Greece (C-328/16), environmental impact assessment (C-117/17, C-671/16) and emission allowance trading (C-58/17, C-572/16, C-577/16)

(četrdesetdvoredne), te samo devet godina nakon prvoga rimskog misala na latinici i latinskom jeziku (1474.)., daje pregled sačuvanih primjeraka Misala, te opis novotiskanog izdanja Misala po zakonu rimskoga dvora iz 2023.On the occasion of the 540th anniversary of the Missal by the law of the Roman Court, the author writes about the importance of this book (cultural and national), which was printed only twenty-eight years after the completion of the Gutenberg\u27s Bible in 1455 (forty-two-line Bible), and only nine years after the first Roman Missal was written in Latin language and alphabet (1474). It gives an overview of the preserved copies of the Missal, and a description of the newly printed edition of the Missal by the law of the Roman Court in 2023

Ways of knowing: Passionate humility and reflective practice in research and management
No full textFor all the attention that the concept of reflective practice has attracted, very little has been said concerning what might incline someone to be open to engage in it. My concern in this essay is with two characteristics of professional, including administrative, practice-a language of certainty and a language of inquiry -and, when the conditions under which the language of certainty has come to dominate professional practice, with the question of what might be required to introduce a posture of reflective inquiry into that practice. I advance the idea that "passionate humility" may be one of the criteria requisite for the cultivation of reflective practice, as it contains the promise of turning administrative and policy action from a language of certainty to a language of reflective inquiry. I suggest that we might learn something about the production and place of humility from the treatment of scientific practice in the philosophy of natural and social science, in two areas: in general, which sees "science" as grounded at least in part in an attitude of doubt; and in particular, from interpretive research methods and interpretive policy analysis, in which the language of inquiry is increasingly operative. Both of these might have something important to tell us concerning contemporary practices in administration and management. © 2009 The Author(s)
