Cryogenic interferometric inertial sensors for penultimate mirror vibration monitoring

    No full text
The poster aims to present highly sensitive inertial sensors developed for future gravitational-wave detectors. E-TEST (Einstein Telescope Euregio Meuse-Rhine Site & Technology)[1,2] is an international collaboration that consists of a prototype suspension combining passive and active isolation techniques for a 100 kg silicon mirror cooled down radiatively to 25 K in a suspended cryostat. It is aimed at validating R&D to meet Einstein Telescope’s requirements in the relevant environment [3]. This unprecedented seismic isolation calls for highly sensitive inertial sensors at each stage of the isolation chain to monitor its efficiency, as well as the performance of the low-vibration cooling strategy by characterizing the residual motion at the mirror level. Several sensors have been developed either as part of the isolation stage of the suspension or as witness sensors in the harsh cryogenic environment close to the mirror. Cryogenic and vacuum compatible horizontal and vertical cryogenic inertial sensors were developed to monitor the cryogenic penultimate stage down to 1 fm/√Hz from 1 Hz onwards. [1] A. Sider, C. D. Taxation of financial assets in developing countries

    No full text
In developing countries, most financial assets in formal markets are deposits at financial institutions. This potentially important tax base could be taxed at a low administrative cost. When revenues of financial taxes are significant, implicit taxes dwarf explicit taxes. The author focuses on the implicit taxation of financial assets through seigniorage, reserve requirements, lending targets, and interest ceilings combined with inflation. The last instrument has often been overlooked, but it has generated more than a third of implicit revenues in some cases by lowering the cost of government borrowing. Tax revenues are difficult to measure because of regulations that prevent the use of market prices for computation and distort the meaning of some definitions. For some countries, the standard method of seigniorage grossly underestimates the revenue from financial taxation. The author discusses various sources of distortion but ignores potential impacts on the level of saving and the growth rate. Although taxes on financial assets have a low administrative cost, the excess burden that stems from the misallocation of resources is probably a much higher fraction of revenues than that of other taxes.Economic Theory&Research,Environmental Economics&Policies,Banks&Banking Reform,Public Sector Economics&Finance,Municipal Financial Management

A Design Tool for Passive Wrist Support

    No full text
A design tool for passive wrist support using compliant spatial beams as gravity balancer is presented. The aim of this assistive device is to reduce required effort for pronation-supination and flexion-extension by 70% to help patients with muscular weakness keeping their hand’s posture and doing daily tasks, while the forearm is rested. To reach this goal, a setup with three connection points to the user’s hand, and two optimized spatial beams as elastic gravity compensators, are developed. The overall shape and cross-sectional dimensions of the compliant beams are attained using an optimization technique. The objective is reaching a desired endpoint kinetostatic behaviour which is determined based on the hand’s weight and available muscular forces. A design case is presented to show the ability of the method, and the final errors from the desired behaviour are clarified. In the end, possible further applications of the design tool are discussed.Accepted Author ManuscriptMechatronic Systems DesignPrecision and Microsystems Engineerin

A Consistency Analysis of Phase-Locked-Loop Testing and Control-Based Continuation for a Geometrically Nonlinear Frictional System

    No full text
peer reviewedTwo of the most popular vibration testing methods for nonlinear structures are control-based continuation and phase-locked-loop testing. In this paper, they are directly compared on the same benchmark system, for the first time, to demonstrate their general capabilities and to discuss practical implementation aspects. The considered system, which is specifically designed for this study, is a slightly arched beam clamped at both ends via bolted joints. It exhibits a pronounced softening-hardening behavior as well as an increasing damping characteristic due to the frictional clamping. Both methods are implemented to identify periodic responses at steady-state constituting the phase-resonant backbone curve and nonlinear frequency response curves. To ensure coherent results, the repetition variability is thoroughly assessed via an uncertainty analysis. It is concluded that the methods are in excellent agreement, taking into account the inherent repetition variability of the system

G. Petit. The author describes the objectives of imprisonment, promoted by four protagonists of XIX th Century -France : Moreau-Christophe, Beaumont, Tocqueville and Lucas. These writers and practitioners are quite representative of the main ideological trends of this period. The key-concept chosen by the author is that of improvement : can or must prison be a factor of or lead to the improvement of the inmate ?L'amendement ou l'entreprise de réforme morale des prisonniers en France au XIXe siècle. G. Petit. WHICH HUMAN CAPITAL MATTERS FOR RICH AND POOR'S WAGES? EVIDENCE FROM MATCHED WORKER-FIRM DATA FROM TUNISIA

    No full text
In this paper, we study the return to human capital variables for wages of workers observed in Tunisian matched worker-firm data in 1999. This reveals us how returns to human capital in a Less Developed Country like Tunisia may differ from the industrial countries usually studied with matched data. We develop a new method based on multivariate analysis of firm characteristics, which allows us most of the benefits obtained by introducing firm dummies in wage equations for studying the effect of education. It also provides a human capital interpretation of the effect of these dummy variables. Moreover, in the studied data, using three firm characteristics easily collectable yields results close to those obtained by using the matched structure of the data. The workers with low wages or low conditional wages experience greater returns to human capital than workers belonging to the middle of the wage distribution, while their return to schooling is significantly lower than that of high wage workers. The estimates support the hypothesis that human capital is associated with positive intra-firm externality on wages. Therefore, a given worker would be more productive and better paid in an environment strongly endowed in human capital. However, the low wage workers do not take advantage of the human capital in the firm. Conversely, the low wage workers benefit from working in the textile sector in terms of wages unlike the middle and high wage workers. Finally, the low wage workers and high wage workers benefit from an innovative environment, while the middle wage workers do not.Wage, returns to human capital, matched worker-firm data, quantile regressions, factor analysis, Tunisia

Agro Food’s Quality Signs and Free Movement of Goods. What Strategies for the European Operators?

    No full text
Several recent cases judged by the Court of Justice of the European Communities have raised interesting issues on the possibility for operators of food chains to use national quality signs indicating a territory of origin, different from the European regulatory ones (Protected Geographical Indications). These various attempts from France, Germany and Belgium were all condemned as protectionist policies contradicting the free movement of goods between Member States in the European Market. However, the condemned national policies can be seen as defending the viability of specific kinds of activities (of small enterprises) in specific places (rural areas). These cases as a consequence, form a good illustration of the difficulty that a government faces while trying to make compatible the protection of certain traditional activities with free markets. Exploring this idea, the presentation of the court rulings is developed in the first section. In the second section, the economic theoretical categories these cases raised are investigated. This helps to answer to the question of the best way to ensure market niches through products’ quality in the context analysed. Collective trademark as a form of intellectual property right is in particular highlighted. The third section considers the Court decisions on this basis.Free Movement of Goods, Geographical Indications, Collective Trademarks, Agribusiness,

Abstract: This study analyzes the paratexts and paratranslations of the literature produced in French by one of the writers from the Algerian immigration: Azouz Begag. These paratexts and paratranslations contain information about the author and the history of this sort of literature, and they are also responsible for the translator's presentation. In the first chapter, analyzing the literature - called Beur literature, it's possible to notice that the idea of mother language becomes mutable because it is the "colonizer's language": an imposed language. This francophone literature desires to change this visible hegemony of the French language, and the use of paratexts often takes place for that purpose. In the second chapter, the paratexts were classified according to Genette and his book Seuils, translated into Portuguese by Àlvaro Faleiros, Paratextos Editoriais (2009); and the paratranslations classified according to Yuste Frías and his study Au seuil de la traduction: la paratraduction (2010) and to Marie-Hélène C Torres in her book Traduzir o Brasil Literário, paratexto e discurso de acompanhamento (2011). Afterwards, the paratexts of two French editions of Azouz Begag's Le Gone du Chaâba were analyzed. In the third chapter, Alec G Hargreaves and Naïma Wolf's American translation, Shantytown Kid (2007), and Elena Garcia-Aranda's Spanish translation, El niño de las Chabolas (2011) were analyzed. At the end, my findings demonstrate how these "epitexts" and "peritexts" are the necessary places to show the translator and the translation process' visibility, because it consists in the locale where the translator is allowed to speak
