Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Instrument de mesure des attitudes et des croyances stigmatisantes des professionnels de la santé du Québec envers la clientèle autochtone : une étude de validation
No full textINTRODUCTION. Malgré que les populations autochtones soient minoritaires au Canada, elles sont surreprésentées dans les problématiques de santé. Leurs expériences dans le système de soins de santé sont parfois teintées de stigmatisation, de discrimination et de racisme, ce qui amène les Autochtones à sous-utiliser les services de santé et augmente, par le fait même, les disparités existantes. Or, on constate un décalage important entre la perception des professionnels de santé quant à leur prestation de soins et les expériences de soins de la patientèle autochtone. Cette étude vise à mener les premières étapes d'évaluation des propriétés psychométriques de l'instrument « Stigmatisation envers les Autochtones en milieux de soins ». MÉTHODE. Un devis descriptif transversal réalisé auprès d'un échantillon d'infirmières constitué par choix raisonné (n=149) a été utilisé. L'analyse factorielle exploratoire a permis d'évaluer la validité de construit et d'explorer la structure factorielle de l'instrument de mesure. Des corrélations avec l'Échelle M-Patas ont permis d'évaluer la validité convergente. La validité de critère concomitante a été évaluée par des comparaisons de moyennes pour le score total et chacune des composantes selon deux groupes (discrimination : oui vs. non). L'alpha de Cronbach a permis d'estimer la fiabilité de l'instrument. RÉSULTATS. L'analyse factorielle a révélé une structure à 17 items répartis en 5 facteurs qui expliquent 66.87% de la variance totale. Les corrélations avec l'Échelle M-Patas se sont révélées faibles et ne permettant pas d'établir la validité convergente avec l'instrument en développement. La validité liée au critère « discrimination » est établie uniquement pour un facteur, la composante cognitive envers la personne. L'estimation de la cohérence interne a permis d'établir la fiabilité de l'instrument, les alphas de Cronbach varient de satisfaisant (0,671) à excellent (0,845). L'alpha pour l'instrument total indique un excellent degré d'homogénéité (0,870). CONCLUSION. L'instrument « Stigmatisation envers les Autochtones en milieux de soins » est fiable et la validité de contenu ainsi que de construit a été démontré. Toutefois, d'autres études de validation devront être effectuées afin de raffiner l'instrument.INTRODUCTION. Despite the fact that Indigenous populations are a minority in Canada, they are over-represented in health issues. Their experiences in the health care system are sometimes tinged with stigma, discrimination, and racism, which leads them to underutilize health services and there by increases existing disparities. There is a significant gap between health professionals' perceptions of their services and the care experiences of Indigenous clients. The purpose of this study is to conduct the first steps in evaluating the psychometric properties of the "Stigma towards Aboriginal people in health care settings" instrument. METHODS. A cross-sectional descriptive design was used to assess the psychometric properties of the scale. To assess construct validity, we used a reasoned choice sample (n=149) of nurses. The exploratory factor analysis made it possible to explore the structural factors of the scale of measurement. correlations with a similar scale, the M-Patas Scale, have been used to assess the convergent validity of the scale. The Cronbach alpha was used to estimate the reliability of the scale. RESULTS. Factor analysis revealed a 5-factor structure representing 66.87% of the explained variance. For a final solution of 17 items. The correlations with the M-Patas Scale were weak and did not allow for convergent validity between the two scales. The validity of the "discrimination" criterion has been solely established for the cognitive components towards the person. The internal consistency method has made it possible to establish the reliability of the scale, the Cronbach alpha ranges from satisfactory (0,671) to excellent (0,845). The alpha for the total scale indicates an excellent degree of homogeneity (0.870). CONCLUSION. The "Stigma towards Aboriginal people in health care settings" instrument is reliable and its content and construct validity has been demonstrated. However, further validation studies are required to refine the "Stigma towards Aboriginal people in health care settings" instrument

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
