An Observational Study With the Janssen Autism Knowledge Engine (JAKE((R))) in Individuals With Autism Spectrum Disorder

For the full list of authors, see article.Objective: The Janssen Autism Knowledge Engine (JAKE(R)) is a clinical research outcomes assessment system developed to more sensitively measure treatment outcomes and identify subpopulations in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Here we describe JAKE and present results from its digital phenotyping (My JAKE) and biosensor (JAKE Sense) components. Methods: An observational, non-interventional, prospective study of JAKE in children and adults with ASD was conducted at nine sites in the United States. Feedback on JAKE usability was obtained from caregivers. JAKE Sense included electroencephalography, eye tracking, electrocardiography, electrodermal activity, facial affect analysis, and actigraphy. Caregivers of individuals with ASD reported behaviors using My JAKE. Results from My JAKE and JAKE Sense were compared to traditional ASD symptom measures. Results: Individuals with ASD (N = 144) and a cohort of typically developing (TD) individuals (N = 41) participated in JAKE Sense. Most caregivers reported that overall use and utility of My JAKE was "easy" (69%, 74/108) or "very easy" (74%, 80/108). My JAKE could detect differences in ASD symptoms as measured by traditional methods. The majority of biosensors included in JAKE Sense captured sizable amounts of quality data (i.e., 93-100% of eye tracker, facial affect analysis, and electrocardiogram data was of good quality), demonstrated differences between TD and ASD individuals, and correlated with ASD symptom scales. No significant safety events were reported. Conclusions: My JAKE was viewed as easy or very easy to use by caregivers participating in research outside of a clinical study. My JAKE sensitively measured a broad range of ASD symptoms. JAKE Sense biosensors were well-tolerated. JAKE functioned well when used at clinical sites previously inexperienced with some of the technologies. Lessons from the study will optimize JAKE for use in clinical trials to assess ASD interventions. Additionally, because biosensors were able to detect features differentiating TD and ASD individuals, and also were correlated with standardized symptom scales, these measures could be explored as potential biomarkers for ASD and as endpoints in future clinical studies. Poiesis and Obstruction in Art Practice
No full textThis PhD thesis examines the concept of poiesis, that is ‘calling into existence that which was not there before’, in the context of obstruction in studio practice. It poses the question ‘Is there a methodology that engages with obstruction which in turn calls new work’? In this thesis, the concept of poiesis emerging from the late Dr. Murray Cox’s ‘Aeolian Mode’, is analyzed alongside a concept of praxis, (a philosophical companion to poiesis), familiar to artistic practice. This thesis describes the orientation of the original idea, The Aeolian Mode, clinically developed by Dr. Murray Cox in Broadmoor Psychiatric Hospital. This PhD seeks to identify if there are similar ‘tenets of approach’ held within the methodology of ‘The Aeolian Mode’, that would be useful or are identifiable in artistic studio practice. This thesis draws on the work of the philosopher, Professor Richard Kearney, specifically Kearney’s ideas on the necessity of ‘the other’ for ‘radical possibility’ to occur. It maps a context of both Freudian and Jungian interpretations of art practice, identifying how these ideas have shaped the way art is seen today. Furthermore, it challenges the Freudian idea of ‘pathography’ and favours a Jungian approach of ‘individuation’ in the understanding of creative processes. It develops a ‘methodology of the conversation’, interviewing students, established artists, tutors about their approaches to obstruction/poiesis in art practice. Additionally, it examines my own obstruction to painting and identifies the methodology that released me from this obstruction. Conducting these interviews on art practice has enabled me to confirm my initial concerns about Freudian ‘pathography’ whilst validating the possibility of the Jungian concept of ‘individuation’ being of use to art practice. Finally, this PhD discusses the implications for further study and research, which have emerged during the ‘methodology of the conversation’ and the task of dissolving my obstruction to painting
Quantized Distributed Optimization Schemes: A monotone operator approach
No full textRecently, the effects of quantization on the Primal-Dual Method of Multipliers were studied.In this thesis, we have used this method as an example to further investigate the effects of quantization on distributed optimization schemes in a much broader sense. Using monotone operator theory, the effect of quantization on all distributed optimization algorithms that can be cast as a monotone operator was researched for two different problem subclasses. The averaging problem was used as an example of a quadratic problem, while the Gaussian channel capacity problem was an example of the non-linear problem subclass. A fixed bit rate quantizer was used in combination with a dynamic cell width, to analyse the robustness of distributed optimization schemes against quantization effects. In particular, we have shown that for practical implementations it is possible to incorporate fixed bit rate quantization with dynamic cell width in a distributed optimization algorithm without loss of performance for both problem classes.Electrical Engineering | Circuits and System
Fake-ID Use Among Fraternity/Sorority Members
No full textThe author explores differences among fraternity/sorority members and nonmembers in the use of and attitudes about fake IDs. Data from this study of 3,780 students from 12 institutions across the country indicate that fraternity/sorority affiliated students were almost three times as likely to have a Jake ID and maintain less healthy attitudes about them when compared to non-affiliated students. The researcher identifies recommendations for professionals working with this community

A case study in the evaluation of English training courses using a version of the CIPP model as an evaluative tool
No full textThis thesis presents an evaluative case study of the 20 English training courses offered in the Applied English Department (AED) of an Institute, given the pseudonym W.G, in southern Taiwan. No evaluation had been done since the AED had been set up and using Stufflebeam’s CIPP (Context, Input, Process and Product) evaluation model this research was carried out. The purpose of the research was to attempt, through the gathering of qualitative data from a variety of sources and using a variety of research instruments, an evaluation of the 20 English training courses which were designed for and taken by students who hoped, mainly, to become children's English language teachers. The courses were examined through four key components, namely, "course aims and objectives", "course contents and materials", "course conduct and teaching-learning process" and "assessment and student performance". Data were gathered through questionnaires, interviews and the review of existing documents and was obtained from current students, directors of the AED, instructors, alumni and employers of alumni. The resultant data served to present a comprehensive overview of the AED and the 20 English training courses and furnished evidence sufficient to allow for a number of recommendations for improvement and change to emerge. Fundamentally it is not clear that there is sufficient congruence of students needs and the courses offered. It emerged that the AED would probably benefit from a refocusing of student needs, a review of AED structures and governance, uniform syllabus design and presentation, a review of student feedback on instructor performance and a number of fundamental adjustments to the courses, in particular, their content, teaching methodology and assessment. Overall the AED had many positive aspects all of which could be built on and added to as the results of the data suggested. It emerged that the CIPP evaluation model has, in the educational context, a lot to commend it and this has been illustrated in this research. If followed carefully it covers all aspects and features of a program and provides a methodical, all-embracing design which can produce useful material for exploration and adoption if appropriate. It is in most cases a positive program enhancing exercise designed to develop rather than close existing programs

Numerical invariants of normed matrix factorizations
No full textWe define a normed matrix factorization category and a notion of bounding cochains for objects of this category. We classify bounding cochains up to gauge equivalence for spherical objects and use this classification to define numerical invariants. These invariants are expected to correspond under mirror symmetry to the open Gromov-Witten invariants with only boundary constraints of Lagrangian rational cohomology spheres defined by the second author and Tukachinsky.
For each Delzant polytope, we construct a normed matrix factorization category. For Delzant polytopes satisfying a combinatorial relative spin condition, we construct an object of this category called the Dirac factorization. The Dirac factorization is expected to correspond under mirror symmetry to the Lagrangian submanifold given by the real locus of the toric symplectic manifold associated to the Delzant polytope. In the case of the -simplex for odd, we show that the Dirac factorization is spherical, mirroring the fact that is a rational cohomology sphere.
