Interview with Peter McLaren: “Critical Education Must Transform the World”
Javier Collado-Ruano interviews Peter McLaren about his views on critical pedagogy and how to transform traditional formal education away from capitalist structures
Deciphering the molecular architecture of membrane contact sites by cryo-electron tomography
At membrane contact sites (MCS) two cellular membranes form tight appositions that play critical roles in fundamental phenomena such as lipid metabolism or Ca2+ homeostasis. The interest for these structures has surged in recent years, bringing about the characterization of a plethora of MCS-resident molecules. How those molecules are structurally organized at MCS remains enigmatic, limiting our understanding of MCS function. Whereas such molecular detail is obscured by conventional electron microscopy sample preparation, cryo-electron tomography (cryo-ET) allows high resolution imaging of cellular landscapes in close-to-native conditions. Here we briefly review the fundamentals of cryo-ET and how recent developments in this technique are beginning to unveil the molecular architecture of MCS. This article is part of a Special Issue entitled: Membrane Contact Sites edited by Christian Ungermann and Benoit Kornmann

The crisis that Basarab Nicolescu pointed out in his Manifesto of Transdisciplinarity (1996) highlights the need to reorganize the educational system of knowledge, starting from universities as places of support and dissemination of forms of research useful for promoting change actions in this day and age – during the era of
the Covid-19 pandemic. In fact, being closely associated with educational issues since its inception, transdisciplinarity can contribute to the development of a problematizing spirit and, therefore, help the progress of knowledge, thus allowing the creation of unexpectedly creative solutions, new possibilities, and new otherwise inaccessible horizons in fragmented and reductive visions of reality.
The contribution, developed inside the "Red Latinoamericana para el cambio social y el aprendizaje emancipatorio" following the solicitations born during the 3d World Congress of Transdisciplinarity (virtual mode), reflects on the question of responding adequately to the new educational challenges currently taking place on a global level, investigating the relationship between transdisciplinarity and the innovation of university teaching
Impairment of botrydial production in Botrytis cinerea allows the isolation of undescribed polyketides and reveals new insights into the botcinins biosynthetic pathway

Biomimicry: a Necessary Eco-Ethical Dimension for a Future Human Sustainability
This article reflects on the concept of “global citizenship” from a transdisciplinary methodology and a biomimetic approach. A sustainable human image appears with this epistemological symbiosis, that constitutes the DNA of a genuine tool of civilizational transformation. On the one hand, the transdisciplinary methodology is opened to the multi-referential conception of the three pillars proposed by Basarab Nicolescu (2008): levels of reality, logic of the included middle, and complexity. On the other hand, the concept of biomimicry approached by Janine M. Benyus (2012) identifies nine operating principles of life in order to mimic nature in the reformulation of new sustainable human production systems with the biosphere. The aim of this study is to identify international agreements on environmental and sustainable development, to elaborate some contribution in the post-2015 eco-political-educational strategic framework led by the United Nations with the Sustainable Development Goals. With the purpose of strengthening ties between education and sustainability through symbiotic bridges between nature and culture, the work identifies the vital axises that constitute the interdependence of ecosystems to make a biomimetic application in the social, political, and educational structures of human systems. Then, this paper is an innovational research that seeks to integrate the eco-ethics as a practice in the “Global Citizenship Education” proposed for UNESCO for next decade 2015-2025
