A clash of hands and tongues - 2 Maccabees 14 and 15 in the framework of cognitive linguistics
Applying cognitive linguistics to the text of 2 Maccabees 14 and 15 is a useful
tool for our understanding of these narratives. Studying the author of 2 Maccabees
14 and 15’s use of the cognitive concepts ‘hands,’ ‘right hand’ and ‘tongue’ in
contrasting ways, makes it possible to reconstruct the narrative into a structure of
‘body-cosmology.’ In this exegetical structure, the narrative of 2 Maccabees 14
and 15 can be described as a confrontation between ‘that which is below’ and ‘that
which is above’ or a conflict of interests between the authority of the God of the
Maccabees and a gentile dictator. In this conflict between a heavenly and earthly
force, the Maccabees are depicted as those who restore God’s reign by their holy
actions.http://reference.sabinet.co.za/sa_epublication/patris1http://reference.sabinet.co.za/document/EJC14584
This article analyses three main passages where Peter the Venerable mentions the Jews : the De miraculis II 15 which recalls loans raised by a great monastery ; his polemical Adversus Iudaeos which, for the period, shows a rare knowledge of Jewish postbiblical literature ; the Letter 130 in which the author invites king Louis VII to confiscate Jewish money. There Peter appears as the champion of a determined anti-Judaism, but it would be necessary to abuse of these texts to find in him the head of medieval anti-Semitism ; at the utmost is he the revealer of the later.
A análise dos excertos de narrativa poética baseia-se principalmente na teoria de Jean-Yves Tadié (1994).Abstract : The present work aims at proposing a commented retranslation on the novel Paul et Virginie, by the French author Bernardin de Saint-Pierre. As a secondary objective, we propose an analysis of the Brazilian translations of this novel from 1906 to 2008 into the Brazilian literary system under the perspective of "View of Translations" and a study of the translated and not translated paratexts. For both the translational analysis and the retranslation we used representative excerpts from the theoretical principles of Antoine Berman (1995), Gerard Genette (2010), and Lawrence Venuti (1995). The analysis of the excerpts of the poetic narrative is based mainly on Jean-Yves Tadié's theory
The aesthetics of Pierre Boulez
To enable the reader to find references as quickly and easily as possible, I have grouped all references together in the bibliography in alphabetical order. Texts by the same author are distinguished first by year and second, if there are several texts from the same year, by letter. Interviews and writing collaborations (including published correspondence) involving Boulez are also ordered alphabetically. The year given at the beginning of each bibliographical entry is, in the majority of cases, the year in which the text was first published (not necessarily the year of the edition cited). For all writings written by Boulez, I have provided the original title under which the text in question was first published (usually in French). Many articles have subsequently been translated into English and therefore I have decided to provide page references for both versions. For all texts by writers other than Boulez, I have cited the version of the text I have used. Wherever possible, I have cited the existing English translations of texts originally written in French. However, on many occasions I have considered it necessary to make alterations to the published translations. This is particularly applicable to Boulez on Music Today (1971) and Orientations (1986), both of which display an often heavy-handed and rather inaccurate approach to the task of translating specific concepts employed by Boulez. In contrast. Stocktakings of an Apprenticeship (1991) has required only occasional minor amendments. All changes to the published English translations are acknowledged in the corresponding footnote. None of the material m this thesis has previously been submitted for a degree in this or any other University. The copyright of this thesis rests with the author. No quotation from it should be published without prior written consent and information from it should be acknowledged.
