Turbulent flows driven by the libration of an ellipsoidal container

    No full text
We present a combination of laboratory experiments and numerical simulations modelling a geophysically relevant mechanical forcing: libration. Longitudinal libration corresponds to the periodic oscillation of a body's rotation and is, along with precessional and tidal forcings, a possible source of turbulence in the fluid interior of satellites and planets. In this study, we investigate the fluid motions inside a librating tri-axial ellipsoidal container filled with an incompressible fluid. The turbulent flow is driven by the elliptic instability which is a triadic resonance between two inertial modes and the base flow with elliptical streamlines. This is called the libration driven elliptical instability (LDEI). We characterize the transition to turbulence as triadic resonances develop while also investigating the properties of the turbulent flow that displays both intermittent or sustained regimes. The existence of such intense flows may play an important in understanding the thermal and magnetic evolution of bodies subject to mechanical forcing, which is not considered in standard models of convectively-driven magnetic field generation

Radiation data (2014-2019) at site D17 (Adelie Land, East Antarctica)

    No full text
This dataset reports raw half-hourly radiative fluxes acquired at site D17 on the marginal slopes of Adelie Land (East Antarctica) and complements another dataset on near-surface meteorological variables including drifting-snow mass fluxes at the same location. The available data have been measured almost continuously since mid February 2014 with a Kipp and Zonen CNR4 net radiometer installed 2 m above ground and include downward/upward shortwave/longwave radiation. Latitude: 66.7°S ; Longitude 139.9°E Date/Time (UTC): Start:2014-02-18 06:00 ; End: 2019-12-07 23:30 Elevation 450 m The data files contain the following variables and units: YYYY: year; MM: month; DD: day; hh: hour; mm: minute; SWU: upward shortwave radiation (W m-2); SWD: downward shortwave radiation (W m-2); LWU: upward longwave radiation (W m-2); LWD: downward longwave radiation (W m-2);The following acknowledging sentence should appear in publications making use of this dataset: "This work would not have been possible without the financial and logistical support of the French Polar Institute IPEV (programme CALVA-1013 and GLACIOCLIM-SAMBA-411)". Les «Sept Merveilles du Dauphiné » : entre mémoire provinciale et instrumentalisations

The Seven Wonders of Dauphiné : between provincial memories and exploitation. The Seven Wonders of Dauphiné were invented in the 17th century, though they belong to a much older tradition, started by Gervase of Tilbury. Drawing a parallel with the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, the local mythology attached more importance to the figure than to a set list of sites, which tended to change depending on the author. Local myths were soon diverted to other primarily political ends, with each wonder representing an aspect of royal power, a trick later criticised by 18th century Enlightenment writers. In the 19th century the wonders came to serve other uses and the gradually developing travel trade turned them into curiosities not to be missed. The Seven Wonders of Dauphiné nevertheless undoubtedly helped to forge a provincial identity and, oddly enough, were the only major features capable of fixing local memories.L'invention des «Sept Merveilles du Dauphiné» remonte au XVIIe siècle mais s'inscrit dans une tradition déjà ancienne, inaugurée par Gervais de Tilbury. The Effects of a "Fat Tax" on the Nutrient Intake of French Households

    No full text
This article assesses the effects of a "fat tax" on the nutrient intake of French households across different income groups using a method that estimates the nutrient elasticities of French households. We estimate a complete demand system by aggregating an individual demand system over cohorts. The use of a cohort model is justified by the incompleteness of our data. We find that a "fat tax" would have ambiguous and extremely small effects on the nutrient intake of French households, and its associated economic welfare costs would be similarly weak.Household survey data, demand system, nutrient elasticities., Food Consumption/Nutrition/Food Safety,
