Oliver Coles writes from New Haven, Connecticut, to Alden Partridge in Norwich, Vermont, and introduces his 15-year-old son, Augustus Coles, who is to enter the American Literary, Scientific, and Military Academy at Norwich and is accompanied by James M. Testing goodwill: Conflict and co-operation in new product development networks
Network forms are often seen as models of organisational flexibility, promoting the building of trust and exchange of information between different business functions while offering both cost savings and reductions in the uncertainties usually associated with innovation. Both internal and external networks have been identified as key elements in the collaborative development of new products. The actual process of network building and ongoing network management is not well researched, although the existing literature highlights difficulties for organisations attempting to maintain active product development networks. This article examines the development and management of such a network in the defence industry and focuses on network building processes in terms of the interactions between the individuals involved. This network has endured and evolved over many years despite a series of conflicts. One of the key findings is that the effective functioning of the overall network is closely allied to established processes within the two participating firms

The CrystalGrid Collaboratory Foundation Workshop, Southampton, 13-17 September, 2004: a selection of presentations
The objective of the workshop was to discuss and plan the establishment of a global collaboratory for the development and application of eScience concepts and technology to the field of chemical crystallography and dependent or related subjects. Preserving repository content: practical tools for repository managers
The stated aim of many repositories is to provide permanent open access to their content. However, relatively few repositories have implemented practical action plans towards permanence. Repository managers often lack time and confidence to tackle the important but scary problem of preservation.Written by, and aimed at, repository managers, this paper describes how the JISC-funded KeepIt project has been bringing together existing preservation tools and services with appropriate training and advice to enable repository managers to formulate practical and achievable preservation plans.Three elements of the KeepIt project are described:1. The initial, exploratory phase in which repository managers and a preservation specialist established the current status of each repository and its preservation objectives;2. The repository-specific KeepIt preservation training course which covered the organisational and financial framework of repository preservation; metadata; the new preservation tools; and issues of trust between repository, users and services;3. The application of tools and lessons learned from the training course to four exemplar repositories and the impact that this has made.The paper concludes by recommending practical steps that all repository managers may take to ensure their repositories are preservation-ready

Synthesis and characterisation of a series of Group 7 metal 2,2,2,2-dicarbonylbis(triorganophosphine)-arachno-2-metallatetraboranes, M(CO)(2)L-2(B3H8) (M=Re, Mn); crystal and molecular structures of Re(CO)(2)(dppf)(B3H8) and Mn(CO)(2)(dppe)(B3H8)
Arachno-2-metallatetraboranes, [M(CO)(2)L-2(B3H8)] (M = Re, L = PPh3, P(C6H4Cl-4)(3), P(C6H4OMe-4)(3), P(CH2Ph)(3); M = Mn and Re, L = 1/2dppm, 1/2dppp, 1/2dppb, 1/2dppf; M = Mn, L = 1/2dppe), have been synthesised from reactions of [NBu4][B3H8] with fac, cis-[MBr(CO)(3)L-2.] under photolytic conditions. These compounds were characterised by NMR (H-1, B-11, P-31) and IR spectroscopy. [Mn(CO)(2)(dppe)(B3H8)] and [Re(CO)(2)(dppf)(B3H8)] were further characterised by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. These studies confirmed molecular Cs symmetry and a trans dicarbonyl arrangement. Similar reactions with the bis(monodentate) organophosphine complexes, mer, trans-[MnBr(CO)(3)L-2], did not yield isolatable arachno-2-metallatetraboranes
