Post-submission changes to prespecified statistical analysis plans
Transparency and reproducibility are two of the fundamental principles of evidence generation and dissemination of research knowledge.12 Researchers ask questions, challenge answers, replicate results, and scrutinise findings—this is how we accumulate knowledge and help develop evidence based policy. Scientific integrity, reliability, reproducibility, and transparency are paramount if scientific studies are to serve as the basis for policies that can have a big effect on human wellbeing.
Changes in the growth of very preterm infants in England 2006-2018
OBJECTIVE: To compare weight gain from birth to term equivalent age in very preterm infants in England born during two eras (2006-2011 and 2014-2018); to assess demographic and care factors influencing weight gain. METHODS: Data for infants born before 32 weeks of gestation during 2014-2018 in England were obtained (29 687 infants). Weight gain modelled using SuperImposition by Translation And Rotation (SITAR), with infants grouped by gestational week. A cohort from 2006 to 2011 was used for comparison (3288 infants). Multiple linear regression was used to assess factors influencing change in weight SD score from birth to 36 weeks postmenstrual age. RESULTS: Weight gain velocity (termed 'intensity' in SITAR models) was greater in the more recent cohort for all gestation groups born before 30 weeks of gestation. After adjustment for gestation, birth weight and other perinatal factors, care elements associated with faster weight gain included delivery in a level 3 unit (0.09 SD less weight gain deficit, 95% CI: 0.07 to 0.10) and parenteral nutrition initiation during the first day of life (0.08 SD, 95% CI: 0.06 to 0.10). Factors associated with slower weight gain included early ventilation (-0.07 SD, 95% CI: -0.08 to -0.05) and less deprived neighbourhood (-0.012 SD per Index of Multiple Deprivation decile, 95% CI: -0.015 to -0.009). CONCLUSIONS: Weight gain for extremely preterm infants was faster during 2014-2018 than during 2006-2011. Early initiation of parenteral nutrition and birth in a level 3 unit may contribute to faster weight gain
Body mass index cut offs to define thinness in children and adolescents: international survey
OBJECTIVE: To determine cut offs to define thinness in children and adolescents, based on body mass index at age 18 years.DESIGN: International survey of six large nationally representative cross sectional studies on growth. SETTING: Brazil, Great Britain, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, Singapore, and the United States. SUBJECTS: 97 876 males and 94 851 females from birth to 25 years. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Body mass index (BMI, weight/height(2)). RESULTS: The World Health Organization defines grade 2 thinness in adults as BMI <17. This same cut off, applied to the six datasets at age 18 years, gave mean BMI close to a z score of -2 and 80% of the median. Thus it matches existing criteria for wasting in children based on weight for height. For each dataset, centile curves were drawn to pass through the cut off of BMI 17 at 18 years. The resulting curves were averaged to provide age and sex specific cut-off points from 2-18 years. Similar cut offs were derived based on BMI 16 and 18.5 at 18 years, together providing definitions of thinness grades 1, 2, and 3 in children and adolescents consistent with the WHO adult definitions. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed cut-off points should help to provide internationally comparable prevalence rates of thinness in children and adolescent
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. A discussion of statistical methods to characterize early growth and its impact on bone mineral content later in childhood
Background: Many statistical methods are available to model longitudinal growth data and relate derived summary measures to later outcomes.Aim: To apply and compare commonly used methods to a realistic scenario including pre- and postnatal data, missing data, and confounders.Subjects and methods: Data were collected from 753 offspring in the Southampton Women’s Survey with measurements of bone mineral content (BMC) at age 6 years. Ultrasound measures included crown-rump length (11 weeks’ gestation) and femur length (19 and 34 weeks’ gestation); postnatally, infant length (birth, 6 and 12 months) and height (2 and 3 years) were measured. A residual growth model, two-stage multilevel linear spline model, joint multilevel linear spline model, SITAR and a growth mixture model were used to relate growth to 6-year BMC.Results: Results from the residual growth, two-stage and joint multilevel linear spline models were most comparable: an increase in length at all ages was positively associated with BMC, the strongest association being with later growth. Both SITAR and the growth mixture model demonstrated that length was positively associated with BMC.Conclusions: Similarities and differences in results from a variety of analytic strategies need to be understood in the context of each statistical methodology
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
