Characterization of modern fine-grained deposits in france in order to investigate their potential as buiilding material
Preservation of natural resources becomes an important issue in our societies. Raw materials of the fired-clay industry are considered as non-renewable because there are extracted from fossil geologic formations. In this context, current fine-grained deposits of fluvial and coastal systems constitute alternatives to the quarrying of geologic formations. The aim of this thesis is firstly to assess, within France, the renewal of the resource for such materials; and secondly, to seek alternative methods to enhance the use of such sediments to reduce the yearly volume of fossil sediments consumed by fired-clay industry.A first evaluation allowed highlighting that the renewal of the source of fine sediments is provided by the fluvial and coastal deposits with more than 20 Mm3/yr especially in relation to hydraulic management.Development of a Mineralogical Reference Framework (MRF) from industrial mixtures allowed the evaluation of sites taking into account the sediment composition. This MRF constitutes a rapid screening of a site compared to the classic method that necessitates several experiments. This is to be applied to sites which potential has been validated by the MRF.Only a part of the source, about 5 Mm3, can be used by the fired-clay industry which consumes 3,5 Mm3/yr. Fine material resource seems to be renewable. Finally, the realization of mixtures with shortening agents or other sediments with complementary properties allows valuing a larger number of fine-grained deposits
Free surface flow models for long term simulation of meandering systems migration
Over a long time, Meandering systems build sedimentary architectures composed of porous bodies scattered inside a volume of low-permeability sediments. These bodies may contain natural resources. In order to optimize their mining, it is essential to estimate the distribution and connectivity of such bodies. To this end, Mines ParisTech develops Flumy, a process-based model simulating the formation of these architectures. This thesis aims to improve the simulation of the migration in Flumy by taking into consideration the influence of the local slope. For this purpose, three distinct models were considered in conjunction, and compared. The first one (constant slope model), which constitutes the basis of the current Flumy version, was originally developed by [Ikeda 1981]. The second model (variable slope model), developed by [Lopez 2003], assigns to the free surface the slope of the surrounding topography. Finally, the last model (Saint-Venant model) has been derived from the variable slope model. Initially calculated under a known free surface, the mean flow in each cross-section is now obtained by solving the Saint-Venant equations over a known river bed. Each of those three models has been applied to the simulation of free meanders. Moreover, the constant-slope and variable slope models have been used to reproduce the confined meanders of two Canadian streams. The results point to a more realistic meanders development using the variable slope model than with the constant slope model. This improvement can particularly be observed in individual meanders, whose rate of extension decreases with the age. It is also noticeable in the overall river behavior, which self-confines in a meander belt. The specific morphology of the confined meanders is also better reproduced using the variable slope model than with the constant slope model. Lastly, though a lesser extent, the Saint-Venant model shows the same advantages than the variable slope model. In addition, it allows the construction of a physically meaningful free surface over a wide range of beds and, in doing so, resolves a limit of the variable slope model
Input of the study of carbonate-rich paleosols and specific climofunctions to paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic reconstructions : application to the oligo-miocene alluvial successions of Western Europe
Through the study of alluvial Calcisols from the Digne-Valensole (SE France) and the Loranca (central Spain) basins, the aim of this thesis is to develop specific methods and to propose new paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic data for Western Europe. These paleosols were investigated by pedological, sedimentological, mineralogical and geochemical methods. These highlight leaching and fersiallitisation as major processes in the formation of these profiles, and the influence of the lateral variations of parent materials on paleosols features. Moreover, the cross study of paleosols and sedimentary deposits allows their integration in a high-resolution sequence stratigraphy model, and opens a discussion about the estimation of aggradation rate from alluvial successions.New climofunctions based on major elements contents and distributions through these profiles are also proposed from the study of modern analogs from NE Spain. These functions include a ratio between the subsurface horizon and the upper part of parent material to avoid bias due to the strong heterogeneity of the altered deposits. These are complementary to previous methods developed from the morphological study of calcium carbonate accumulation horizon, which permit to estimate mean annual precipitations and their seasonality, bringing the possibility to quantify mean annual temperatures and precipitations even with truncated profiles, frequent in such successions.Their application to the studied paleosols reveals a relatively hot climate with a strong seasonal contrast in terms of precipitations, similar to the modern Mediterranean climate. These data improve our knowledge of this period that paleontological studies qualify as more humid, and raise the question about the recording of climatic signal according to the considered object. Indeed, if the preservation of fossils is usually linked to humid conditions, soils form over the emerged parts of environment and record drier conditions, which justify the need to enhance the use of paleopedological studies in such reconstructions
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
