English Literature.2019 Fall.Includes bibliographical references. The purpose of this poster is to compare the role of monsters that initially appeared in 19th-century novels as they are reimagined in a contemporary work. The focus will be Jekyll and Hyde (The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde), Griffin (The Invisible Man), and their reinterpretations in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (LEG). This contrast will ask if monsters can change when reinterpreted and what these changes, or lack of, means in terms of societal fears. Through cultural studies research as framed by Jeffery Jerome Cohen and Alexa Wright, monsters embody specific cultural fears (Cohen 4) that then define what constructs acceptable human identity (Wright 1). Within the original texts, Hyde's monstrosity is an embodiment of the loss of racial purity, while Griffin's is a personification of the fear of the unknown and unseen, racial Other. However, changing cultural attitudes towards human traits create a change within the monster. In LEG, Hyde's shift in monstrosity suggests a greater fear of the consumption of violence, while Griffin's lack of change displays a continued fear of the unknown Other acting as a terrorizing force. The implications of this outcome indicate a transformation in how culture perceives purity and violence, yet a lack of change in how the unknown, racial Other is viewed. Monsters are reimagined continuously in contemporary manners, offering a method to examine how society has or has not changed, especially in terms of the present-day treatment of others and the consumption of violence
Representasi Sastra Perjalanan dalam Novel Brianna dan Bottomwise Karya Andrea Hirata
This research aims to describe the representation of Travel Literature by Carl Thompson in the novels Brianna dan Bottomwise by Andrea Hirata, with a focus on three aspects: reporting the world, revealing the self, and representing the other. The method used in this research is qualitative descriptive. Data collection was conducted through reading and note-taking techniques, specifically gathering quotations that illustrate the aspects of travel literature representation in the novels Brianna dan Bottomwise by Andrea Hirata. The data's validity was ensured through triangulation of sources. Based on the analysis conducted, it was found that in narrating the reporting of the world, the author used both objective and subjective perspectives when presenting the world. In revealing the self, the author utilized Romanticism in terms of self-discovery and the search for meaning related to the places visited. On the other hand, in representing the other, the author tended to depict foreign cultures with a doctrinal perspective, emphasizing Western culture and norms. The overall observation of reporting the world, revealing the self, and representing the other points to the author's ethical implications. These ethical implications showcase the superiority of Western culture over Eastern culture. The author also tends to explore and discover his own identity during the journey. Additionally, the author portrays a mindset aligned with Western norms and tends to normalize Western cultures in contrast to Eastern cultures. In conclusion, the research shows that the portrayal of the world by the author in the novels Brianna and Bottomwise is driven by an ethical agenda, focusing on the superiority of Western culture over Eastern culture.
Setelah melihat aspek reporting the world (pelaporan dunia), revealing the self (pengungkapan diri), dan representing the other (representasi liyan), maka terlihat bahwa agenda pengarang yang cenderung terlihat yaitu implikasi etis. This research aims to describe the representation of Travel Literature by Carl Thompson in the novels Brianna dan Bottomwise by Andrea Hirata, with a focus on three aspects: reporting the world, revealing the self, and representing the other. Epigenetic mechanisms of resilience to psychopathology following trauma exposure
There is a dearth of research examining epigenetic modifications associated with resilience to psychopathology after trauma exposure. This study sought to investigate resilience-associated methylation differences in 51 glucocorticoid receptor regulatory network (GRRN) genes which have been previously associated with various forms of psychopathology. Multiple linear regressions were performed on each of the CpG sites associated with the 51 GRRN genes with resiliency as the predictor and DNA methylation as the outcome in a sample of 171 Detroit residents age 20-89 (M = 54.00, SD =14.14, 63.2% female). Resilience was significantly (p < 0.05) associated with changes in methylation at 23 genes, with 6 surviving FDR correction. T-tests were then performed for the 23 CpG sites that met nominal significance to assess whether there was significant differential methylation in the resilient group relative to the non-resilient group. Nine CpG sites demonstrated significant resilience-associated methylation differences as well as differential methylation when compared to the susceptible group. The results of this study identify potential candidate genes associated with resiliency and contribute to the growing body of literature seeking to identify resiliency markers in humans.Submission published under a 24 month embargo labeled 'U of I Access', the embargo will last until 2021-05-01The student, Brianna Bucknor, accepted the attached license on 2019-04-23 at 19:41.The student, Brianna Bucknor, submitted this Thesis for approval on 2019-04-23 at 20:13.This Thesis was approved for publication on 2019-04-24 at 12:56.DSpace SAF Submission Ingestion Package generated from Vireo submission #13852 on 2019-08-22 at 15:07:57Made available in DSpace on 2019-08-23T20:36:07Z (GMT). Weaponized Womanhood: How German Women Were Complicit in Their Deprivation of Agency
In this essay, the topic of gender roles in Germany between the Weimar Republic and the Nazi regime is analyzed closely. Though women made major strides in establishing their rights to individual liberty following World War I, the onset of the Nazi era in Germany led to a precipitous drop in their involvement in wider society. The evidence for this includes an analysis of the guidelines of popular women’s clubs, university and government policies, as well as individual examples. What is remarkable about this event is that this was not done to women by men alone-- women across political boundaries worked together to architect their removal from public view.Peer reviewe
Peer Support and Food Security in Deaf College Students
Objective: This paper investigates the role of peer support in food security among deaf college
students. Participants: The sample included 166 college students who took the survey between
May and October 2017. Methods: Participants completed a bilingual online survey in ASL and
English. This survey included questions about peer support, the USDA’s 6-item food security
module, and sociodemographic characteristics. Results: Out of 166 students (mean age=23;
SD=6), 60.7% were food secure. About 26.4% (n= 43) were at-risk for food insecurity and
another 12.9% (n=21) had very low food security. The sample included respondents who
identified as people of color (54%) and women (52%). Binary logistic regression revealed that
compared to people who reported always receiving peer support, people who never received peer
support were significantly more likely to experience food insecurity. Conclusions: This study
demonstrates a strong relationship between peer support and deaf college students’ food security
experiences. This connection calls for a greater emphasis on the importance friends have in deaf
people’s lives

The Impact of Short-term Study Abroad on Global Citizenship Identity and Engagement
Higher education has increasingly begun to realize the importance of engaging students in global citizenship learning opportunities to be more globally informed, prepared, responsible, and competent. Study abroad in higher education is rapidly becoming recognized as an effective experiential learning platform for fostering intercultural exchanges. This article reports on research that examined study abroad as a learning platform for integrating classroom acquired knowledge with real world experience. The study explored the value of short-term study abroad in the facilitation of students' global awareness and knowledge, their identification as global citizens and endorsement of prosocial values associated with global citizenship, and their participation as globally engaged citizens. Participation in study abroad was found to significantly strengthen one’s affiliation with global citizenship, endorsement of prosocial values, and identify motivation to engage in global citizenship activities. Our findings have implications for the design and implementation of global citizenship education curricula in higher education.
