New zeolite Al-COE-4: reaching highly shape-selective catalytic performance through interlayer expansion

    No full text
A ferrierite-type layered aluminosilicate, Al-RUB-36, was prepared for the first time and its interlayer expansion resulted in new zeolite catalysts denoted Al-COE-3 and Al-COE-4. Decane hydroconversion tests demonstrated the highly active and shape-selective nature of the new Al-COE-4 catalyst with an unprecedented isomerization yield, highlighting the potential of this material as a hydroisomerization catalyst. This is the first report on achieving shape-selectivity via interlayer expansion

Not a Nurse, Not Househelp: The New Occupation of Elder Carer in Urban Ghana

    No full text
As Ghana goes through a demographic transition, in which people are living longer and with long-term, chronic diseases (de-Graft Aikins et al 2012), families are experiencing a growing strain in caring for their elderly and frail members. Reciprocities across the generations are changing (Aboderin 2006, Apt 1996, Dsane 2013). There is a growing demand for elder care providers to supplement the direct care of kin busy with work and school in Ghana and abroad. Middle-class households in urban and peri-urban areas tend to use the labor of househelp and fostered adolescents for this purpose, while wealthier households and middle-class urban households with access to migrant remittances increasingly turn to carers hired through commercial nursing agencies, who supplement the work of househelp and fostered adolescents and work alongside them in households. Thus, changes in ageing in Ghana have generated a new, emergent occupation: the elder carer. Although the occupation is modeled after its counterpart in the United Kingdom and other Western countries, I argue that it is understood in relation and opposition to recognized social roles in Ghana, in particular those of daughter, househelp, and nurse.Peer reviewe

Kora. An ecological inventory of the Kora National Reserve, Kenya.

The Tana River drains the southern and eastern slopes of Mount Kenya and the eastern slopes of the Aberdares, and is the largest river in Kenya. It passes through most of Kenya's agro-climatic zones (Sombroek et al, 1980) from zone 1-9 (humid and cold) on Mount Kenya and the Aberdares, to VII-1 (very arid and very hot) over much of the lower Tana. The river has received little ecological attention especially in the Kora region and consequently knowledge of the fish fauna is poor. This scarcity of information is largely due to the lack of economic incentives for development and the inaccessibility of much of this region where road communications are difficult and at times impossible. The upper reaches of the Tana, above about 1500m, were examined by van Someren (1952) and notes on the fishes in the middle reaches have been made by copley (1958), Whitehead (1959) made a collection of fishes on the lower Tana River below Garissa. Following this, a single collection has been made, by the Fisheries Department, Kenya, (Oduol, 1976) from six localities on the lower Tana River below Kora.Campbell, K., C. Coe and M. Saunders, 1985. Several persistent, low luminosity (LX ~ 1034 erg s-1), long spin period (P > 100 s) High Mass X-ray Binaries have been reported with blackbody components with temperatures > 1 keV. These hot thermal excesses have correspondingly small emitting regions (< 1 km2) and are attributed to the neutron star polar caps. We present a recent XMM-Newton target of opportunity observation of the newest member of this class, Swift J045106.8-694803. The period was determined to be 168.5 ± 0.2 s as of 17 July 2012 (MJD = 56125.0). At LX ~ 1036 erg s-1, Swift J045106.8-694803 is the brightest member of this new class, as well as the one with the shortest period. The spectral analysis reveals for the first time the presence of a blackbody with temperature kTBB = 1.8 +0.2-0.3 keV and radius RBB = 0.5 ± 0.2 km. The pulsed fraction decreases with increasing energy and the ratio between the hard (> 2 keV) and soft (< 2 keV) light curves is anticorrelated with the pulse profile. Simulations of the spectrum suggest that this is caused by the pulsations of the blackbody being ~ π out of phase with those of the power law component. Using a simple model for emission from hot spots on the neutron star surface, we fit the pulse profile of the blackbody component to obtain an indication of the geometry of the system

In his writings, the Arab author Al-Jahiz addressed issues related to music, Tarab (a genre of music), and singing. Al-Jahiz was known for his knowledge and literature, and he wrote numerous works that shed light on the luxurious aspects of society. He authored a book titled "Ethics of Singers" and another titled "Singers, Singing, and the Craft." In these books, Al-Jahiz defended singing as an artistic form and believed that it possessed scientific principles and foundations similar to other arts and literature. He promoted singing as a pleasurable art form. Despite his affiliation with the Mu\u27tazila school of thought, Al-Jahiz was a supporter of singing and singers, and he wrote about their ethics and arts. In his treatise "Al-Qiyan," Al-Jahiz discussed the influence of courtesans and their households on Islamic society, pointing to the immorality, passion, and vice that may result from this influence. Overall, Al-Jahiz\u27s writings have had a significant impact on our understanding of music, Tarab, and singing in ancient times

Theoretical Insights of History, Morality, and Society as the Literary Trio of the Author-Reader Relationship.

    No full text
This paper attempts to examine the relationship between the author and the reader by polarizing history, morality, and society as a selected triad of theoretical interpretation. The study mainly focuses on the theoretical insights of these relationships in order to give proper clues for delving deep into the technical and thematic peculiarities of different literary genres. Therefore, it follows a qualitative approach to some fictional works, particularly novels, to demonstrate how the authorial perspective intersects with the reader’s ability to grasp the latent textual messages projected by authors in the course of the plots. The relationship between the author and the reader will be limited to three related topics, namely, history, morality, and society. As for history, the study sheds light on the postcolonial attributes of literature to reveal the function of liberal humanism in bridging the gap between the colonized people and the colonizers. Morality, on the other hand, will be discussed to explore the relative view of morality by authors and how the reader might conceptualize it according to his/her cultural background. Lastly, the discussion of society will be limited to the social customs and norms approached by authors to deliver a comprehensive depiction of the social reality in which the reader lives his/her true life

The book Nahj al-Balagha is a collection of sermons, letters, adages, commandments, and etiquettes, divided into 238 sermons, 79 treatises, and 489 sayings. People following the Shiite sect regard it as a crucial text for teaching and learning, and they attribute it to Ali Ibn Abi Talib. Yet, the book’s real author is still disputed among Sharia scholars. While some attribute it to Ali Ibn Abi Talib, others claim that al-Sharif al-Radi is the book’s actual author, whereas another group attribute it to al-Sharif al-Murtada. This study employs a comprehensive approach to investigate and analyze the book’s authorship. It involves a detailed literary and historical analysis, examining primary sources, scholarly works, and critical literature to explore the real author of the text. It compares the content of the book with other authenticated works belonging to the potential authors in order to identify similarities and differences. By evaluating the style, language, and themes of Nahj al-Balagha, as well as reviewing historical documents and manuscripts, the study aims to trace the text’s origins and transmissions. In doing so, it addresses the significant critiques and controversies surrounding the text, enhancing our understanding of its historical and literary significance. The study further contributes to the ongoing discourse on the book’s authorship, providing more clarity on the topic and promoting additional scholarly research
