Oscar Wilde : a Victorian sage in a modern age

    No full text
This paper assesses Oscar Wilde’s reaction to the fin de siècle and argues against his widely-accepted position as a main figure in the English avant-garde movement, a view which major literary critics such as Peter Gay, Sos Eltis and S. I. Salamensky promote today. Based on Foucault’s definition of modernity as ‘a break with tradition' rather than a specific time, I argue that Wilde was not the modernist author he is widely perceived as, but a conventional Victorian sage who cleverly adopted, and tailored, the fashion of his time to deliver his thoroughly traditional teachings. The paper is split into five sections. The first of deals with Wilde’s creation of his dandy self and the influences of Carlyle, Arnold and Christ over him; the second section examines Ruskin’s influence over Wilde’s theory of art, and Wilde’s self-perception; the third section continues to examine the influence of the Victorian sages on Wilde by exploring his criticism of contemporary modernity in some of his works; the fourth and fifth sections deal with Wilde’s views on the roles of the sexes and his homosexuality respectively, and weigh these views, through further close analysis of his works, against the argument of his modernity. The research ends by asserting that Oscar Wilde was thoroughly Victorian in his views and themes, and that he perceived himself as a sage for his modern age.peer-reviewe

This dissertation consists of a discussion on theatrical translation of humoristic texts followed by a noted and commented translation of Oscar Wilde#s The Importance of Being Earnest. In the first chapter, questions related to theatrical translation are discussed starting from Patrice Pavis#s concepts of textual concretizations, such as the notions of speakability and performance. In the second chapter, there are analyses of two other translations of the play into Brazilian Portuguese focusing upon the translator#s choices as well as the evolution of the play#s translation through the second half of the twentieth century. This dissertation ends with a discussion on questions related to my translation of the play. In this final chapter, we can find commentaries concerning the choices and changes made in the translation presented, such as the question of the names of the characters, the personal pronouns, addresses and humour. The retranslation, which presents a new scene to Brazilian audiences, and the notes are in the appendix of this dissertation

Frank Zeidler, Milwaukee, and Cold War Civil Defense

    No full text
Civil defense in the Cold War encompassed the development of government policies and procedures to evacuate, shelter, and decentralizing American populations and industries in the event of a nuclear war. This project employs a body of primary documents to examine the unacknowledged role of Milwaukee's last Socialist mayor as a trailblazer in the design and implementation of civil defense policy during his tenure from 1948 until 1960. Under the leadership of the Zeidler Administration the city of Milwaukee was an exemplary national model for civil defense planning. Yet despite superior planning, implementation of civil defense in Milwaukee, like elsewhere, suffered both from apathy and the practical impossibility of preparing for nuclear disaster. This research contributes to our understanding of local defense and offers insight into the contemporary politics of municipal government in the metropolitan area of Milwaukee

The present research investigates expressive stylistic means used by the prominent Anglo-Irish author Oscar Wilde in his two collections of fairy tales, “The Happy Prince and Other Tales” and “A House of Pomegranates”; as well as the writer’s only novel “The Picture of Dorian Gray”. By many literary critics, such as L. Danson (2007), J. Killeen (1999), the author's biographers, R. Ellmann (1988), R. Pettinger (2006), as well as general public, Oscar Wilde has always been considered a master of language, whose style of writing is easily recognizable and unique. The particular research paper aims at identifying the expressive stylistic means used by Wilde is his tales and the novel which add a special emotional colouring and make the writer's style of writing so original and unforgettable. The results of this investigation show that the tales and the novel fully reflect Wilde's involvement in the aesthetic movement, as well as help to undermine the Victorian morality. The outcomes of this research give a more profound understanding of the functions of the expressive stylistic means used by Wilde in his two collections of fairy tales and “The Picture of Dorian Gray” in order to convey the main message to the reader

    J. R. R. Tolkien, ecology, and education

John Ronald Reul Tolkien (1892-1973) was an Oxford trained philologist, professor (don) at Oxford, noted scholar, and author of high fantasy literature. His The Lord of the Rings trilogy (TLOR) has sold over 150 million copies worldwide making it the second bestselling work of fiction of all time (“The Lord of the Rings,” 2014). His popularity has resurged, though it never really waned, with Peter Jackson’s big screen adaptation of Tolkien’s most famous work The Lord of the Rings (2001-2003), also in trilogy form, winning multiple Oscar Awards, and grossing over 3 billion dollars worldwide (“The Lord of the Rings,” 2014). More recently, Jackson’s three part installments of the precursor to TLOR, The Hobbit (2012-2014), have also proved highly successful in movie format. As has been long noticed by fans and critics alike, Tolkien’s works, TLOR, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion (his legendarium of Middle-earth or Arda), and other lesser known works like The Adventures of Tom Bombadil (TATB) are permeated with ecological themes and tropes. According to Morgan (2010), Tolkien’s ecology is “[grounded in a] creation-centered ethic of stewardship . . . . that holds the potential to re-enchant the world” (p. 383). Further, Morgan (2010) also says, that “The story . . . possesses significant pedagogical potential, albeit implicit in nature" (pp. 383-384). Obviously, at least to many, the Earth is in a state of ecological crisis. My dissertation investigates ecology through select high fantasy works of J. R. R. Tolkien. Specifically, I intend to address what can be construed by studying the enigmatic character of Tom Bombadil, while giving due consideration to other characters who represent or are a party to ecological concerns. This dissertation will prove that the study of Bombadil is a boon to ecological education in the forms of autodidacticism, ecopedagogy, and ecoliteracy by showing readers how the Earth should be treated and with regard to changing our current anthropocentric mindset to one that embraces a respect and reverence for nature; that is, biophilia

Oscar Wilde and the Language of Music

    No full text
The relationship between Wilde and music is extremely rich and complex: it involves the author’s knowledge and love for the music of his time and of previous centuries, the many references to music in his oeuvre, the literary use of forms such as chansons and ballads, the musical organization of some of his major works, the musicality of his verses and of his aphorisms but also the music of his own voice (reported by many contemporaries). Most importantly, Wilde’s very commitment to the idea of performance in art and in life will attract many Twentieth and Twenty-First centuries musicians – such as David Bowie, Gavin Friday and Morrissey – who, beside adopting a Wildean stance, will also set his verses to music, or write music inspired by the author and by his writings, showing how the strength of Wilde’s life and work also resides in its capacity of easily translating into non-literary modes
