Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    No full text
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Data mining and mall users profile

Marketing scholars have suggested a need for more empirical research on consumer response to malls, in order to have a better understanding of the variables that explain the behavior of the consumers. The segmentation methodology CHAID (Chi-square automatic interaction detection) was used in order to identify the profiles of consumers with regard to their activities at malls, on the basis of socio-demographic variables and behavioral variables (how and with whom they go to the malls). A sample of 790 subjects answered an online questionnaire. The CHAID analysis of the results was used to identify the profiles of consumers with regard to their activities at malls. In the set of variables analyzed the transport used in order to go shopping and the frequency of visits to centers are the main predictors of behavior in malls. The results provide guidelines for the development of effective strategies to attract consumers to malls and retain them there

The main objective of this dissertation is to value complex aspects of free time and self through theatre exercises. The selection of scientific literature lies on three queries. First, an analysis of the effect of free time on human behavior (going farther the leisure activities); specifically, we follow basic ideas from the Psychosociology of the Free Time (PFT; Munné, 1980), as well as PFT contributions that consider non-linearity, fuzziness, and fractality as complex aspects of free time in daily life (Codina, 2004c; Munné, 1993, 1997c). The second query refers to the plural vision of the Self Complex Model (SCM; Munné, 1997a, 2000) and its methodological proposal (Codina, 1999b, 2000, 2005a, 2005b). The third theoretical basis comes from the uses of theatre activities in clinical settings, the analysis of social life, and basic acting training; these uses are examined according to their self and hetero-conditionings, that is, what respectively favors and/or constrains a free behavior performance (Casas & Codina, 1998 following Munné, 1980). This framework brings theatre exercises performance as a way to explore complex aspects of free time and self. The empirical approach consisted in a seven-session theatre exercises workshop with Psychology students from the University of Barcelona (no academic benefits or money were given for attending the experience). Besides theatre exercises, participants filled questionnaires based on the Twenty-Statement Test and the Time Budget Technique; in addition to this, a personal semi-structured interview was made once the workshop had finished. Data collection and analysis followed the Sequential Qualitative Methodology (SQM; Codina, 1998, 1999b, 2000, 2002, 2004b, 2004c), which considers the conditions to apprehend complex aspects of behavior phenomena. Results showed non-linearity and fuzziness in the perceived freedom when performing daily life activities and the theatre exercises; moreover, fractal properties as iteration and invariance were observed in the self-descriptions and their associations with activities and exercises. These findings corroborate PFT and SCM statements and some previous empirical evidences about the complexity of free time and self. Furthermore, theatre exercises as predominantly self-conditioned activities appear as a complementary procedure to other interpersonal behavior heuristics based on acting techniques

The present research approaches the unpublished autobiography of Iverna Codina, a prestigious Chilean-Argentinean writer, fully connected to Mendoza and living in Buenos Aires. She offers, in Diez años de exilio (1976-1986) , two countries: Cuba and Mexico. Her outlook is intimate and inquisitorial searching into her personal history and that of her environment, centred in the Argentinean military Process. Her memory covers the uneven ground of her past in order to revisit with magnanimity her own existence and work. Both reflect different experiences in a deep and intense American sensitivityFil: Molina, Hebe B..

    No full text

Observation of solution-induced corneal staining with fluorescein, rose bengal and lissamine green

Ever since sodium fluorescein (‘fluorescein’ [FL]) was first used to investigate the ocular surface over a century ago, the term ‘staining’ has been taken to mean the presence of ocular surface fluorescence [1]. This term has not been necessarily taken to infer any particular mechanism of causation, and indeed, can be attributed to a variety of possible aetiologies [2].\ud \ud In recent times, there has been considerable interest in a form of ocular surface fluorescence seen in association with the use of certain combinations of soft contact lenses and multipurpose solutions. The first clinical account of this phenomenon was reported by Jones et al. [3], which was followed by a more formal investigation by the same author in 2002 [4]. Jones et al described this appearance as a ‘classic solution-based toxicity reaction’. Subsequently, this appearance has come to be known as ‘solution-induced corneal staining’ or more recently by the acronym ‘SICS’ [5].\ud \ud The term SICS is potentially problematic in that from a cell biology point of view, there is an inference that ‘staining’ means the entry of a dye into corneal epithelial cells. Morgan and Maldonado-Codina [2] noted there was no foundation of solid scientific literature underpinning our understanding of the true basic causative mechanisms of this phenomenon; since that time, further work has been published in this field [6] and [7] but questions still remain about the precise aetiology of this phenomenon..
