    save-cocks

    No full text
save v. . . the hay was shaken out evenly over the mown ground and later raked into "winrows", a continuous pile of hay stretching the length of the field. These rows were then converted into small heaps - "smallcocks" in Mirimichi and Avalon, . . . from three to five feet in diameter at the base. In the Avalon these cocks were merged next day into larger "save-cocks" out in the meadow.W. J. KIRWIN FEB 1973 JH FEB 1973DNE-citUsed I and SupUsed I and SupNot use

The Effect of Different Production Systems on Some Morphological Characteristics and Asymmetry in Atak-S Cocks

    No full text
The aim of this study was to determine the effect of housing system on morphological characteristics of Atak-S cocks reared in closed and free range systems. Cocks were fed with standard feed according to feeding program for seventeen weeks. In order to determine the effect of the housing system on some morphological features and asymmetry, Crest length (İU), Crest width (İG), Eye width (GG), Nose length (BU), Face width (YG), Wattle length (SU), Beak length (GU) in bilateral features, measurements were made from the right and left sides on the head of the cocks. Furthermore, foot features such as Width of tarsometatarsus at the joint with tibiotarsus (EG), Length of tarsometatarsus (TU), Width at 1 cm above the spur of tarsometatarsus (MG1), Width of tarsometatarsus at the spur (MG2), Length of the back toe (AP), Length of the outer toe nail (DT), Length of the fourth phalanx of the outer toe (D4), Length of the third phalanx of the outer toe (D3), Length of the mid toe nail (OT), Length of the fourth phalanx of the mid toe (O4), Length of the third phalanx of the mid toe (O3) measurements were taken on the right and left feet of the cocks. All measurements were made in millimetres (0.01 mm) using a digital caliper. Relative asymmetry (GA) and fluctuating asymmetry (DA) values were calculated for the features showing bilateral symmetry. According to the statistical analysis on the obtained data, the morphological characteristics of ATAK-S cocks were not affected by the housing system, and that the characters underlined in both housing conditions developed in the same way as right and left

Ejaculate characteristics of three genotypes of local cocks in the humid tropics

    No full text
Twenty four (24) adult Nigerian local cocks comprising 8 naked-neck, 8 frizzle and 8 normal were subjected to two ejaculations per week for 14 weeks using the massage technique. Ejaculates were subjected to both physical and chemical evaluations. Results showed that naked- neck and frizzle cocks had higher (P0.05) among the three genotypes. There were also no significant differences in most of the chemical parameters among the genotypes. From these results the naked-neck and frizzle cocks appear superior to normal cocks under the humid tropical environment in semen output and quality.. Effect of a velogenic newcastle disease virus on body and organ weights of vaccinated Shika brown cocks

    No full text
Newcastle disease virus (NDV) produces both gross and histopathologic changes in tissues and organs of infected birds. These lesions may cause increase or decrease in organ sizes especially lymphoid organs leading to immune suppression. Therefore, the effect of a velogenic NDV on the body and organ weights of vaccinated Shika brown (SB) cocks was studied. Forty SB cocks consisting of twenty control and twenty infected cocks were slaughtered at the age of thirty-two weeks after infection with a velogenic NDV. They were weighed before being sacrificed and their internal organs (liver, spleen, thymus, heart, bursa of Fabricius, brain and adrenal glands) were removed and weighed. Sections of these organs were taken and stored in Bouin’s solution for 24 h and lat er sent for histology. The liver, spleen, thymus, heart and adrenal glands of the infected red SB cocks were heavier than those of the control red and white Shika brown cocks and infected white SB cocks. The weight of the spleen and brain of both the control and infected red and white cocks did not vary significantly (P>0.05). The infected red cocks had heavier adrenal glands, heart and liver weight than the control red and infected white cocks. The spleen and brain body weight ratio was similar for both control and infected red and white cocks. The control white cocks had the least thymus body weight ratio. The control white cocks had a higher bursa body weight ratio than the infected red and white cocks and the control red cocks. Only one infected white cock showed perivascular infiltration of lymphocytes and foci of glial cells. The increase in organ weights was seen mostly in the infected red cocks. It is recommended that chickens be routinely vaccinated against Newcastle disease to prevent atrophy of the bursa of Fabricius
