This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from the publisher via the link in this record.Just four years after the end of the Second World War, in his 1949 essay “Here is New York”, E. B. White begins his celebration of the city with the promise that “On any person who desires such queer prizes, New York will bestow the gift of loneliness and the gift of privacy”. In her biography of Maeve Brennan, Homesick at the New Yorker, Angela Bourke takes her cue from White in describing Brennan as “an expert in both loneliness and privacy”. There is a marked tension between privacy and public visibility and obscurity and celebrity in Maeve Brennan’s writing, an anxiety that speaks in significant ways to the concerns of the mid-century Irish woman writer and to the position of women during the years of the American war effort. While Brennan is perhaps best known for her association with the New Yorker magazine through the 1950s and 60s and beyond, her concern with celebrity and public performances of different kinds was also shaped via the formative influence of another New York magazine in the 1940s: Harper’s Bazaar. Maeve Brennan and James Joyce

This is the author accepted manuscript. The final version is available from Taylor & Francis via the DOI in this record. As a New York writer, Maeve Brennan forges a relationship with Ireland as home that speaks to the separation and imaginative return so strongly associated with James Joyce while at the same time putting a careful distance between her work and Joyce’s formidable influence. Drawing on archival material at the University of Delaware and the New York Public Library, which amplifies our understanding of some of the intentions and motivations in Brennan’s work, this essay examines how Brennan transforms Joycean modes and motifs in her careful mapping and writing of New York in her essays for The New Yorker. Written under the pseudonym ‘The Long-Winded Lady’, Brennan’s essays for the magazine break imaginative ground in the city that she lived in for most of her life and expand outwards from the self-contained domestic world of Cherryfield Avenue so central to her Dublin stories. In taking her place in the Joycean tradition of writing the city and writing home, Brennan re-invents the image of the Irish writer bound to Ireland in spite of separation in time and distance; she achieves this by positioning herself in one significant chapter of her writing very emphatically as a New York writer. The main concern here is with Brennan’s adaptation of Joycean motifs and the different ways in which she positions herself in a direct line of inheritance to Joyce as she negotiates her position as a transatlantic writer in the middle of the twentieth century

práce Tato diplomová práce analyzuje tvorbu irsko-americké autorky Maeve Brennan, píšící ve dvacátém století, optikou hanby. Zkoumá celé autorčino dílo: povídky a časopisecké příspěvky vydané ve sbírkách The Long Winded Lady, The Springs of Affection a The Rose Garden, stejně jako novelu The Visitor. Protože má pak tendenci způsobovat další...Thesis Abstract This thesis analyses the fiction of the twentieth-century Irish-American author Maeve Brennan through the lens of shame. All of Brennan's published writing has been included: her short stories and magazine contributions collected in The Long Winded Lady, The Springs of Affection, and The Rose Garden, as well as her novella The Visitor. Shame has recently been embraced in academia as a subject of research, as well as an interpretative key for literary analysis. The thesis examines shame in order to map out social and psychological experience of belonging, and the lack thereof, in Brennan's fiction, as both the threat and the reality of isolation, stemming from social rejection, occur as its prominent themes. These elements are also shown as connected to the issues of self-determination and identity, as Brennan's characters partly embrace and partly oppose social normativity. As some of their individual needs, especially those of women, are add odds with social expectations, they are effectively choosing between social inclusion on the one hand, and embracing their personal difference. As transgressions of social norms come with varying degrees of shame, the emotion is omnipresent in the highly regulated, and surveilled, environments that Brennan depicts. From Pedrolino to a Pierrot: The Origin, Ancestry and Ambivalence of the British Pierrot Troupe

    No full text
In this article, the author considers the British development of the seaside Pierrot troupe, arguing that its construction is consistent with the notion of invented tradition, and the associated concerns with identity and nationality. Tracing the history of the character from its origins as Pedrolino in the commedia dell’arte, the article considers the traditional and novel elements of the British form. This also allows a brief account of the origin and aesthetics of the British tradition. Reflecting on the synthesis of the archaic and contemporary dimensions of the form, the author proposes that the new structure constructed an ambivalent class of character. The composition of both troupes and audiences was drawn from across the range of social strata. Through its collectivity and its treatment of contemporary social themes, it is argued the British Pierrot troupe approached and negotiated questions of a cultural and national identity in the late-Victorian period. Dave Calvert is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Huddersfield, UK. His research interests include street theatre, Applied Theatre and learning disabled performance. He is also a member of The Pierrotters, the last remaining seaside Pierrot troupe

This paper seeks to contribute to literatures on privatization in criminal justice by commenting on some recent developments - especially in Canada and the USA. The focus is on entrepreneurial aspects of corporate and commercial involvement in privatization, and on how the corporate sector plays a part in creating a demand for its own services. The observations of the author draw not only from research knowledge, but also from her experiences in the early 1990s at senior levels of criminal justice Ministries in Ontario, Canada. By recounting some of these experiences - and specifically, situations where the private sector sought to sell products to the penal system and the police - it is hoped that the policy, political, and economic dynamics of privatization can be illuminated. Privatization of control systems involves profit from control systems. This paper addresses the basic question: who profits, and at whose expense? This dataset is a cleaned version of the Founders Online (founders.archives.gov) author/recipient metadata available as of June 2020, formatted as an edge file for network analysis. This metadata includes only letters with authors and recipients, and does not include metadata for documents in the Founders Online database with no author or no recipient, such as receipts or account books. Source/Target pairs for network analysis were created between each author and recipient. In the case of multiple authors or multiple recipients, were split into multiple records with only one author and one recipient each. For example, the letter Sarah Read to Benjamin and Deborah Franklin, 10 April 1734, was split into two records: one with ‘author: Sarah Read’ and ‘recipient: Benjamin Franklin,’ and the other with author: ‘Sarah Read, recipient: Deborah Franklin.’ Links were not made between multiple authors or recipients of a letter. Names were standardized with as little change as possible: for example, the spellings Jacquelin Ambler, Jaqueline Ambler, and Jacquelin (Jaquelin) Ambler in the transcriptions were merged into simply Jacquelin Ambler. Gender of individuals in the network was assigned by first names or historical fact, or if ambiguous for a pseudonym, group of people, or unidentifiable, was left marked NA. The dataset includes 163,671 edges between more than 17,000 individuals. Fields also include the original title of the letter, papers project within Founders Online, permalink to the letter transcription and year, month, and date of the letter

The monitoring of the rights of the child: a child rights-based approach

    No full text
PhDDue to the lacunae between legal obligations to human rights and the actual situation, monitoring is an essential component of the international and national human rights system. Monitoring illuminates the situation of human rights commitments and ensures the relevancy of instruments. The thesis explores monitoring in relation to the rights of the child and submits that a child rights-based approach is essential. Monitoring should not only consider the status and nature of child rights, but a child rights-based approach should also guide efforts so that they improve as well as reflect and respect children's rights. The study defines monitoring and describes a child rights-based approach. As a subject of legal investigation, the thesis then addresses several questions. How do international and national monitoring efforts respect child rights? How have the supervision of international conference agreements supported child rights? Furthermore, how do different countries monitor? National activities are examined through case studies of two Commonwealth countries: Canada and South Africa. Then, analysis is presented about how actors interpret and execute monitoring and the significance of different approaches. Lastly, the rationale, challenges and existing support of a child rights-based approach are discussed. In sum, a child rights-based approach is not generally utilised and the implications of child rights upon the monitoring process are not yet realised. Most monitors, whether international, regional or domestic, inadequately consider the demands of child rights upon the process of ascertaining the situation of children's rights. Proposed guidelines are appended to support a child rights-based approach to monitoring

An evaluative study outlining the experiences and consequences of four people from residential care - from theory to practice

    No full text
This study explores the impact of Residential Care on forming relationships in life. The research was designed to determine what kind of relationship difficulties are experienced by individuals who had been raised in residential care. Indepth interviews were conducted with a sample of four women, aged 40-45 yrs, who had spent their formative years in a Care centre. Prior to the qualitative research, a questionnaire was designed to explore three particular areas: Early development, Transition experience on leaving care, Experiences in forming and sustaining relationships. This questionnaire was used to carry out the interviews with the four women. It was predicted that the results would show that the interviewees experienced difficulties in relationships, as a result of their experiences in care. The results of the research supported this prediction. Each of the interviewees did, in fact, express difficulties in relationships, both friendships and intimate relationships. The respondents attributed this to their experiences in their formative years, in Care. The author further contends that their relationship difficulties can be attributes to the early experience of separation and loss, prior to entering Care. This is supported by the findings of the theorists in Early Development and other related research in this area
