The Spin-Orbit Alignment of the HD 17156 Transiting Eccentric Planetary System
We present high- precision radial velocity observations of HD 17156 during a transit of its eccentric Jovian planet. In these data, we detect the Rossiter- McLaughlin effect, which is an apparent perturbation in the velocity of the star due to the progressive occultation of part of the rotating stellar photosphere by the transiting planet. This system had previously been reported by Narita et al. in 2008 to exhibit a lambda = 62 degrees +/- 25 degrees misalignment of the projected planetary orbital axis and the stellar rotation axis. We model our data, along with the Narita et al. data, and obtain for the combined data set. We thus conclude that the planetary orbital axis is lambda = 9.4 degrees +/- 9.3 degrees for the combined data set. Gravitational Instabilities In A Protoplanetary Disk Including The Effects Of Magnetic-Fields
We investigate the gravitational instability of a thin, Keplerian protoplanetary disk including the effects of a largely azimuthal magnetic field. The model follows that of our previous work (Noh, Vishniac, & Cochran 1991) except for the inclusion of a magnetic field. The disk is assumed to consist of neutral and ionized gas and neutral dust which are coupled by gravity and friction. The growth rates and eigenfunctions are calculated numerically using nonaxisymmetric linear perturbation methods. The results show that the growth rate has a maximum at some intermediate azimuthal number m, but for each value of m it is reduced relative to the unmagnetized case. The effects of the magnetic field appear more strongly on small scales. As the strength of the equilibrium magnetic field increases the growth rates decrease, and the maximum instability occurs at a lower value of m due to the increasing magnetic pressure. The response of each component to the magnetic field is discussed using the behavior of the eigenfunctions in the radial direction. With the inclusion of the magnetic field, the effects of the ionization fraction and friction on the growth rates also appear to be important for high m modes. Increasing the ionization fraction or the friction suppresses instability, but only slightly changes the maximally unstable azimuthal scales. The enhanced growth rates due to a dust component for which thermal pressure is negligible are somewhat reduced by the inclusion of a magnetic field. Sodium Absorption from the Exoplanetary Atmosphere of HD 189733B Detected in the Optical Transmission Spectrum
We present the first ground-based detection of sodium absorption in the transmission spectrum of an extrasolar planet. Absorption due to the atmosphere of the extrasolar planet HD 189733b is detected in both lines of the Na I doublet. High spectral resolution observations were taken of 11 transits with the High Resolution Spectrograph ( HRS) on the 9.2 m Hobby-Eberly Telescope ( HET). The Na I absorption in the transmission spectrum due to HD 189733b is (-67.2 +/- 20.7) x 10(-5) deeper in the "narrow" spectral band that encompasses both lines relative to adjacent bands. The 1 sigma error includes both random and systematic errors, and the detection is > 3 sigma. This amount of relative absorption in Na I for HD 189733b is similar to 3 times larger than that detected for HD 209458b by Charbonneau et al. A Detection Of H Alpha In An Exoplanetary Exosphere
We report on a search for H alpha absorption in four exoplanets. Strong features at H alpha are observed in the transmission spectra of both HD 189733b and HD 209458b. We attempt to characterize and remove the effects of stellar variability in HD 189733b, and along with an empirical Monte Carlo test the results imply a statistically significant transit-dependent feature of (-8.72 +/- 1.48) x 10(-4) integrated over a 16 angstrom band relative to the adjacent continuum. We interpret this as the first detection of this line in an exoplanetary atmosphere. A previous detection of Ly alpha in HD 189733b's atmosphere allows us to calculate an excitation temperature for hydrogen, T-exc = 2.6 x 10(4) K. This calculation depends significantly on certain simplifying assumptions. We explore these assumptions and argue that T-exc is very likely much greater than the radiative equilibrium temperature (the temperature the planet is assumed to be at based on stellar radiation and the planetary distance) of HD 189733b. A large T-exc implies a very low density that is not in thermodynamic equilibrium with the planet's lower atmosphere. We argue that the n = 2 hydrogen required to cause H alpha absorption in the atmosphere is created as a result of the greater UV flux at HD 189733b, which has the smallest orbit and most chromospherically active central star in our sample. Though the overall integration of HD 209458b's transmission spectrum over a wide band is consistent with zero, it contains a dramatic, statistically significant feature in the transmission spectrum with reflectional symmetry. We discuss possible physical processes that could cause this feature. Our remaining two targets (HD 147506b and HD 149026b) do not show any clear features, so we place upper limits on their H alpha absorption levels.National Science Foundation AST-0903573Astronom
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Secretly Eccentric: The Giant Planet And Activity Cycle Of GJ 328
We announce the discovery of a similar to 2 Jupiter-mass planet in an eccentric 11 yr orbit around the K7/M0 dwarf GJ 328. Our result is based on 10 years of radial velocity (RV) data from the Hobby-Eberly and Harlan J. Smith telescopes at McDonald Observatory, and from the Keck Telescope at Mauna Kea. Our analysis of GJ 328's magnetic activity via the Na I D features reveals a long-period stellar activity cycle, which creates an additional signal in the star's RV curve with amplitude 6-10 m s(-1). After correcting for this stellar RV contribution, we see that the orbit of the planet is more eccentric than suggested by the raw RV data. Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases.
