Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. The curious case of offset bars : markers for a baby galaxy disk or signposts of an interaction with dark matter sub halos?
>Magister Scientiae - MScWe have used the Spitzer Survey of Stellar Structure in Galaxies (S⁴G) as a representative sample of the local universe (total of 2352 galaxies in S⁴G) to make a catalog of offset disk barred galaxies. Using the combined variation of the position angle and the ellipticity (provided by ellipse fit) and also through visual inspection, we have been able to identify all offset structures in S⁴G. While primary bars are present in 2=3 of the disk galaxies in the visible universe, offset bars have a much lower fraction. Of the ̴ 1500 (3.6µm images) disk galaxies available in S⁴G, we classified only 49 as offset barred disk galaxies. We have determined basic properties (bar to total luminosity ratio, bar length, disk scale-length and bars of offset bars shape) using GALFIT, a widely used galaxy decomposition software package. Our main conclusion is that all the offset bars are boxy, independent of their offset from the galaxy center, or the mass of the host galaxy. Additionally we find that, the early type offset bars seem to be more boxy than the late types. The comparison of our offset sample with two other samples, respectively, low mass and high mass normal barred galaxies ("normal" for bars located at the photometric center of the host galaxy), reveals them to be at an intermediate position between the two normal samples. The bar length, disk scale-length and bar to total luminosity ratio are on average larger than the low mass normal and smaller than high mass normal barred galaxies. We have found, overall, a tighter correlation between the disk and bar properties for offset bars in comparison to the two normal samples. Our explanation is that, although the offset has no visible impact on the global shape of the bars, the process responsible for these disturbances seems to affect the star formation rate such that their disk and bars are on average more active than the normal barred galaxies in the same mass range, but not enough to surpass normal barred galaxies with much higher mass

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Deconstructing the WISE nearby galaxy population
This thesis aims to test the reliability of the Wide-Field Infrared Space Explorer (WISE) star formation indicators centred at 12 and 22 µm. To accomplish this, the total infrared (TIR) luminosity was used as a calibrator to understand the behaviour of the two indicators. Our sample consists of Spitzer galaxies from the SINGS and KINGFISH surveys, with a select few excluded. The TIR calibration also necessitates that most of our galaxies have FIR data from Herschel. The photometric analysis done on the raw WISE and Spitzer images of our galaxies is explained, including how the isophotes and background sky level were determined for each band/image. Once the reliability of the WISE indicators was established, new star formation rate relations were formulated. The new relations are comparable to previous relations in the literature, but improve on them in stellar mass-, metallicity-, and luminosity range. We also find that metallicity of the galaxies has minimal effect on our relations. In our comparison of emission from PAH molecules, the two bands in question, IRAC4 and W 3 are strongly correlated. This may suggest that the W3 band is dominated by emission from the 11.3 µm PAH molecule, or it might be an effect of the band overlap between IRAC4 and W3
Pharmaceutical companies and ambidexterity in base of the pyramid markets
Dissertation (MBA)--University of Pretoria, 2014.The challenges that face MNPCs in making healthcare more affordable is a topic that
is being increasingly researched. These companies face challenges such as
pressure from governments around the world to lower their prices, stagnant growth in
developed markets and the failing blockbuster business model. Turning to new
markets, such as emerging markets, for growth will necessitate innovations in their
business models. The aim of this research was to understand what business models
will work in low-income patient markets, specifically in the South African base of the
pyramid context.
The investigation of four MNPCs through a case study methodology, allowed the
exploration of their current business models and ambidexterity level. Two of the four
MNPCs exhibited a purely exploitative business model and as such had very little
penetration into the BOP segment. One of the four MNPCs demonstrated a few
characteristics of ambidexterity, but applied mainly an exploitative model and had
limited access to the BOP segment. One of the four companies implemented all of
the characteristics of business models that are successful in entering BOP markets
as well as a high level of correlation to the characteristics of ambidexterity. The result
of this MNPC described was a successful entrance in the BOP segment.
The review of the literature and the findings of this research show that MNPCs can
adopt profitable business models to enter low-income markets that not only serve
consumers at the base of the pyramid but also provide sustained business benefits
to the MNPCs. The research study successfully achieved the research objectives
and provides insights to stakeholders as to which strategies are effective when
entering a low-income patient market and what are the elements that are missing
from business models that are not successful. The research also highlighted
institutional voids and barriers that are unique to the South African state health care
