An exploratory analysis of the spatial distribution of income and wealth in Greece before and after a crisis
The present study evaluates changes in the economic performance of more than 50 prefectural districts in Greece along the 2000s with the aim of investigating the impact of recession on territorial disparities between coastal and inland, marginal areas. An exploratory data analysis was performed to produce a multidimensional interpretation of territorial disparities using per-capita income as a target variable and distinguishing specific development paths for homogeneous groups of regions. This approach has been preferred to more traditional procedures based on convergence analysis on income level and changes over time, since it fosters the debate on the increasingly complex geography of the economic development observed in Greece and the impact of the recent economic recession. Our results outline the existence of two distinct periods with generalized economic growth, a more regular statistical distribution of per-capita income among regions and increased territorial disparities between 2000 and 2008, preceding a period of economic stagnation that produces a heterogeneous distribution of regional income and moderate territorial disparities. Coastal-inland and urban-rural axes reveal as key gradients in shaping disparities in per-capita income, indicating at the same time different development paths considered as primary targets for integrated socioeconomic developmental policies
The long way to crisis: Socioeconomic dynamics vis à vis urbanization and environmental change in mediterranean Europe
This book deals with the Functional Urban Areas (FUAs), classified by OECD following a multi-scale perspective. Information on FUAs is retrieved in the OECD Metropolitan Database which includes several economic, environmental, social, and demographical designed indicators on the 668 metropolitan areas. The focus on FUAs allows, on one hand the in-depth study of territorial units. On the other side, it also remarks the relationship between the socio-demographic, economic and territorial background dynamics through indicators of economic development. Within this context, a remarkable case study is provided by the Mediterranean countries, such as Italy and Greece, analysed at a highly disaggregate spatial level
The long way to crisis: Unraveling peculiarities of socioeconomic dynamics vis à vis urbanization in Mediterranean Europe
The book aims at performing a detailed and multifaceted study to show the advantage of the adoption of territorial statistics, in particular local ones, at national and international levels to deal with the spatial analysis of locally articulated socio-economic processes. The book includes different stand-alone contributions connected to eachother with reference to the topic analyzed, adopted methodologies and statistical database. The study of local systems is performed by means of linear and nonlinear methodologies, using several statistical tools such as, exploratory, descriptive, inferential, and multivariate statistics. Beside this computational aspect, a wide usage of geographic information and tools, are used, i.e., maps and geographic information systems have been made to unravel the territorial complexity and deepen the knowledge of the Italian economic geography and highlight territorial differences within a particular country and between different countries
Contextual differences, contrasting trends? Sustainable development, economic performances, and divergence in land resource depletion
Spatial convergence of ecological/environmental processes has attracted an increasing interest of geo-economic disciplines and social science at large. In this perspective, a quantitative assessment of convergence (or divergence) in specific variables across space is particularly challenging in a context of global change and may contribute to delineate and clarify both linear and more complex processes of natural resource depletion and their underlying factors. In this contribution, we reviewed the theoretical notion of “convergence” in environmental processes, discussing the role of geographical scales as reflective of political, economic, and territorial heterogeneities. Convergence processes have been also disentangled according to the specific background context, and the most relevant implications for policy implementation have been finally discussed. In line with the empirical studies testing for convergence in economic and social variables, our contribution indicates that an “ecological convergence” analysis requires an integrated, multidisciplinary approach aimed at a thorough understanding of socio-environmental systems’ complexity
A QUANTITATIVE EVALUATION of INDUSTRIA 4.0 through SIMULATION of QUEST III ITALIA
This paper provides a quantitative macroeconomic evaluation of the national INDUSTRIA 4.0 plan, the set of Industry 4.0 policy measures implemented by the Italian government. The evaluation is performed using the European Commission’s endogenous growth model QUEST III with R&D, adapted to Italy. Innovation of process- and skill-biased technical change characterizes the fourth industrial revolution and determines human capital formation and the spillover of knowledge accumulation. A set of model parameters and variants has been determined, and four policy scenarios are taken into account under two denominations: Innovative Investments and Skill Achievements. The Italian economy persists in its path of around zero growth, on which it has been for a while. The main results highlight a decade of weak growth, without strong innovation policy interventions, and a low profile and precarious outcomes on the labour side
The effectiveness of Italian measures in facilitating complaints for domestic violence: a regional analysis
Purpose Most of the international literature on Violence Against Women (VAW) provides inconclusive evidence on the ineffectiveness of judicial measures against VAW, thus suggesting the convenience of shifting to extra-judicial measures or integrating both approaches in a comprehensive response to VAW. The present work analyzes the effectiveness of two Italian extrajudicial measures, i.e. Codice Rosa and the Antistalking Helpdesk, on complaints for domestic violence (battering, criminal injuries and psychological violence). Both policies increase the local availability of specialized VAW support services. Design/methodology/approach The work relies on the heterogeneity of implementation year across Italian regions to adopt a staggered approach. Difference-in-differences framework and assess the effectiveness of the two policies. Findings The introduction of Codice Rosa, a special procedure that deals with VAW within the normal hospital/ER care routine, seems to be effective in increasing domestic violence reporting differently from the Antistalking Helpdesk in a special separate structure, as is the local Antiviolence Center, voluntarily accessed by women. Originality/value Existing international evidence on the causal impact of extrajudicial measures on violence reporting is still limited, and to the best of our knowledge, the Italian case has not yet been considered. The convergence of positive results from both this study on Codice Rosa and Sviatschi and Trako’s (2024) work on Peru’s Women’s Justice Centers underscores the critical need for comprehensive and integrated responses to VA
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
