dzieł Samuela Clarke’a z roku 1738 (ta sama oficyna) listy znalazły się w tomie drugim.
Przypisy oznaczone symbolami literowymi pochodzą od tłumacza.Wymiana listów między Josephem Butlerem a Samuelem Clarke’iem, którą zapoczątkował ten pierwszy, pochodzi z przełomu 1713 i 1714 roku. To informacja istotna; korespondują bowiem dwaj ludzie o odmiennych rangach społecznych i autorytetach intelektualnych. Clarke jest w tym czasie głośną i wpływową postacią angielskiego środowiska naukowo-filozoficznego; należy do grona bliskich i zaufanych przyjaciół Isaaca Newtona; jest już po wielokrotnie wznawianym wydaniu A Demonstration of the Being and Attributes of God, które jako cykl odczytów wygłosił w 1704 roku w ramach prestiżowych Wykładów im. Roberta Boyle’a. Drugie ważne dzieło Clarke’a, A Discourse concerning the Unchangeable Obligations of Natural Religion, and the Truth and Certainty of the Christian Revelation, także zostało już opublikowane. W czasie korespondencyjnej wymiany poglądów z Butlerem Clarke był rektorem St. James’s w Westminster, dzięki nominacji królowej Anny. W 1713 roku 22-letni Joseph Butler natomiast dopiero wkraczał na scenę intelektualną, na której rozgłos ważnego filozofa osiągnął w 1736 roku książką The Analogy of Religion, Natural and Revealed, to the Course and Constitution of Nature; również na hierarchicznej drabinie Kościoła anglikańskiego Butler zaszedł wysoko, bo do godności biskupa Durham. Stąd, z tej różnicy społecznego usytuowania, ale nie z różnic intelektualnych korespondencyjnych polemistów, wypływa pewnego rodzaju onieśmielenie, zauważalne w pierwszych listach Butlera. Zagadnienia, wokół których krążą w tej korespondencji przemyślenia obu filozofów, nie są tylko przedmiotem epistolarnej wymiany zdań. To, o czym piszą i na temat czego spierają się w listach Clarke i Butler, było zarazem najistotniejszym zakresem problemowym, jaki pojawiał się w ich uczonych dysertacjach pisanych przy innych okazjach. Obaj należą do tego nurtu angielskiej myśli, który próbował odpowiadać na wyzwania rzucone religii pod koniec XVII wieku przez empiryzm, a religii i instytucjom religijnym przez deizm. Clarke i Butler dostrzegali wyraźnie wzrost znaczenia tych tendencji filozoficznych, które bądź bagatelizowały chrześcijaństwo, jak empiryzm, bądź unieważniały wyjątkową rangę chrześcijaństwa, atakując pojęcie objawienia jako takiego, co czynili deiści. Obrona Clarke i Butlera zakładała możliwość racjonalnego restytuowania wiary (chrześcijańskiej). Realizowali tę apologetyczną próbę na różne sposob, łączyło ich jednak przekonanie, że krocząc drogą rozumu można dotrzeć do tych przeświadczeń, które znane są z objawienia. Racjonalizm w filozofii Clarke jest dużo bardziej radykalny niż u Butlera. Być może dlatego Clarke został oskarżony o arianizm, a Butler został biskupem...1917319
