<i>Chirotherium barthii </i>Kaup 1835 from the Triassic of the Isle of Arran, Scotland
The mould of a track from SE Arran, and several in situ trackways and individual tracks, as well as a partial trackway on a loose block of Triassic sandstone, from western Arran, represent the first verifiable fossil tracks of Chirotherium from the Triassic of Scotland and support a Scythian (Lower Triassic) age for the base of the Auchenhew Beds. The grouping of the I–IV toes with toe V behind and lateral to the group is characteristic of Chirotherium-like tracks. A comparison with European and American Triassic trackways suggests that the tracks belong to the species Chirotherium barthii Kaup, 1835, first described from

The discovery of <i>Isocrinus</i> cf. <i>robustus</i> from the Lias Group (Lower Jurassic) near Dunrobin Castle, Sutherland, Scotland
A single stem section (pluricolumnal) belonging to a post-Palaeozoic crinoid (sea lily) is reported from a small outcrop of Lower Jurassic Lias Group strata exposed in low cliff near Dunrobin Castle. This is the first Jurassic crinoid recorded from Eastern Scotland and the small fragment has enough diagnostic characters to be assigned to the species Isocrinus cf. robustus; a crinoid found commonly in the Lower Jurassic of England. The Scottish form collected has unusual morphology that is atypical of the genus
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Tealliocaris: a decapod crustacean from the Carboniferous of Scotland
Three species of Tealliocaris (T. etheridgii, T. robusta, and T. woodwardi) are recognised from the Carboniferous
of Scotland using a variety of morphological criteria. Newly observed structures of Tealliocaris woodwardi
(Etheridge, 1877), help to resolve the taxonomy of Scottish Carboniferous eumalacostracan crustaceans referred to
the genus Pseudotealliocaris Brooks, 1962. Paired post-orbital spines, oval pores on the pleon, an enlarged tergite of the third pleomere and laterally expanding pleurae of the second pleomere, three ridges on the anterior portion of the
first pleomere, as well as the morphology of the carapace including the various grooves of the carapace, pleon and tail fan are common to these three species of Tealliocaris. The holotype of Pseudotealliocaris caudafimbriata, which is
also the type for the genus Pseudotealliocaris, is considered here to be a species of Tealliocaris thus making it necessary to re-examine in detail other species assigned to the genus Pseudotealliocaris in future studies. Pseudotealliocaris is therefore not considered to be a recognised genus for the Scottish material. The diagnostic structures used to identify Tealliocaris are also common to those species ascribed to Pseudotealliocaris. Pseudotealliocaris etheridgei is redescribed in terms of its former taxa as both T. robusta and T. etheridgii. The different species previously referred to Pseudotealliocaris, and T. woodwardi, are differentiated on the basis of minor differences including the number of anterolateral spines on the antennal scale and carapace, the rugosity of the carinae on the carapace and the presence or absence of transverse grooves on the pleonal tergites. In addition, the expanded second pleonal pleurae and the enlarged third pleonal tergite, the achelate thoracopods, flagelliform pereiopodal exopods, pediform third maxilliped and the presence of phyllobranchiate gills all indicate a closer relationship to decapod crustaceans, in particular Astacida, Homarida and Glypheoidea, than to any other crustacean group
Palaemysis dunlopi Peach 1908 (Eocarida, Crustacea) from the Namurian (Carboniferous) of the western Midland Valley
Palaemysis is one of five eumalacostracan genera obtained from Namurian shales in the western Midland Valley of Scotland. On the basis of the preserved morphology alone, it was concluded that Palaemysis should be retained within the Eocarida rather than being assigned to any extant group.
Palaemysis differs substantially from Anthracophausia despite having been previously considered as synonymous. These differences include the presence of a large rostrum in Anthracophausia, the shape of the telson and uropods, the shape of the abdominal pleura, and the presence of a large pair of anterior spinose appendages (mandibular palps) in Palaemysis. The three species of Palaemysis, P. dunlopi, P. couttsi, and P. tenuis, were first erected on the basis of poorly preserved tail fans. These species could not be adequately, morphometrically or morphologically, differentiated and only one species of Palaemysis is therefore recognised. The species of Palaemysis is taken to be that of the original type species, P. dunlopi
The Elgin Marvels
Not to be confused with the Elgin Marbles, the Elgin Marvels actually come from the Elgin area of Scotland. They are well known fossil reptiles, and their footprints, of
Permo-triassic age that were collected from old sandstone quarries mostly over a century ago. They are partly what inspired me to take up palaeontology, although I had never actually been to Elgin before, nor ever seen the fossils. It was through the lectures of Professor Euan Clarkson of Edinburgh University in the 1980s, that I first became aware of these animals, but it was not until much later that I came face to face with the Elgin Marvels
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
A thyreophoran dinosaur from the early Bajocian (Middle Jurassic) of the Isle of Skye, Scotland
The proximal parts of the right ulna and radius of a thyreophoran dinosaur from Bearreraig Bay, Isle of Skye, represent the first occurrence of this type of dinosaur from the Middle Jurassic rocks of Scotland. The incompleteness of the bones and the lack of more diagnostic features does not allow a precise identification although the ulna has more features in common with that of a eurypodan (stegosaurs and ankylosaurs) than a basal thyreophoran. The earliest identifiable stegosaur from Europe that has similar proximal expansion of the ulna is the middle Callovian (Middle Jurassic) Lexovisaurus of England and France. The ulna of the ankylosaur Mymoorapelta from the Upper Jurassic of Western Colorado, also shows close morphological similarity to the Scottish bone. Other ankylosaur fragments have been recorded from as early as the late Bajocian (Middle Jurassic) of England. The stratigraphic horizon from which the new bones come from is the Bearreraig Sandstone Formation (Early Bajocian, Middle Jurassic)
Working with fossils at the Hunterian Museum: a glimpse into the lives of John Young, John Young and Ethel Currie
The Hunterian Museum has been fortunate to have had some enlightened geological curators in its past history. Most notably from amongst these are the Carboniferous stratigrapher Ethel Currie of the twentieth century, and the illustrious, but perhaps confusing, John Youngs of the nineteenth century. All three of these geologists have made major contributions to our understanding of the geology of Glasgow as well as further afield
